This was one of my favourite projects to make and I reckon it came out pretty awesome! I'm looking at getting a milling machine and/or metal lathe so I may have another go at making the plane with those machines in the future.
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

Surprised you haven't made a new pair of digital calipers out of scrap wood. (Complete with scrap wood battery, and scrap wood LCD screen.)

That is some very fine craftsmanship. It's nice to see good hand work still done these days. I'm a machinist, and periodically need to make a tool, and really enjoy the time working with hand tools, fitting, making something forever. I too, love mixing iron with brass or bronze, the older they get, the better they fit and feel together. I really enjoyed watching, wish I could saw and file that fast, lol.

Beautiful little plane! I bought a small plane about that size back in the eighties. It was made from cast iron but had a very soft blade. It was in the one dollar tool bin so I didn’t expect much. After I made a new iron from an old chisel that became my favorite plane to keep in my pouch.

Watching your videos reminds me to slow down and enjoy the whole process. Sometimes I get fixated on getting it done and rush through some aspects of the build. It’s not so much sloppy fabrication as it’s that I have so many things I want to build that I forget to enjoy the one I’m currently doing. Someday I will learn. Thanks for the inspiration.

Can be used in a pinch, however please note that drill press spindles are not designed for radial loads. That doesn't stop people using them for all kinds of purposes - lathe, drum sander, light/wood milling (with an XY coordinate table underneath) etc.

I made a pull plane based on a Japanese planer as I don’t have the upper arm strength for a push planer but I made mine out of hardwood with a stainless steel base plate a few years back 😊😊 but that was because I could not afford to buy one but needed one for a job I have been doing 😹😹 since then where I can I have started to make many of my own tools where I can not because it’s cheaper but because of the sense of satisfaction I now get when making something using tools that I have made 😻 when you said you loved filling I could not stop laughing as I have spent many hours on all my projects doing hand sanding 😹😹 once I have done the first part with the sander I then doo the rest all by hand and yep I have made all my sanding blocks in different sizes and for each type of grit but some as I always start with 40 grind I find that’s best using the electric sander as it’s quick and easy and then I work my way using the hand blocks 😹😹I don’t know why but I just love hand sanding and have spent hours on that part of the project it’s a running joke at my place the job of putting it together is fast but it’s a lifetime to do the finishing touches 😹😹😹
