This video shows the steps in making a 1779 naval cannon, 24 pounder, like those of Nelson's "Victory", and USS "Constitution". The model is approx. 12" 300mm long, Jerry Howell design, made by John of "johnsmachines.com". Music by Lis Viggers.
Hey John, That's a really nice job. I made the 24 lb. field howitzer from a scaled down museum blueprint. Oh, man what a labor of love these thinks can be. No CNC on mine but a lot of fixturing to get the job done. Have a look some time if you feel like visiting my channel.
Hi DadHav, thanks for watching and commenting. I totally appreciated your superb howitzer, and your attention to detail. I might even have a go at something like that myself. Envious of your videoing skills. The 24lb cannon was my first serious CNC project and since then there have been a carronade and a bombard.. all 1:10 scale. Currently finishing a triple expansion steam engine. That, and other projects at johnsmachines.com. To me, CNC is just another tool, another skill to be explored and used.
Hello John, I'll keep an eye out for what you might make in the future. I don't have anything CNC in my little workshop but years ago I was proficient with AutoCAD and SmartCAM as well as Solid Works. I did a lot of injection mold design at that time. I loved most everything about the job. Forgot a lot over the last 20 years or so though. Keep up the nice work.
That's a great cannon barrel! I've always wanted to make a naval cannon but I don't have a CNC or a lathe. I can make the carriage though. Is there anyway I can get you to make a cannon barrel for me?
Meathook, sorry, but there are not enough hours in the day to make the stuff which I have on my own list. So I don't do commissions. Suggest that you find someone local with a lathe to make it for you. You do not need CNC.
Hi John, Love the cannon. I have a brass cannon about the same size and was wondering where you got the plans for the carriage from! I made the cannon when I was doing a Tafe course I'm in NSW. Any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers
The plans are available online from Jerry Howell. Not expensive. Very good plans and instuctions. Note that the sides of the carriage are parallel, which is probably not authentic. Also, the trunnions are located centrally on the bore, which could be authentic, but most trunnions are located a bit lower than the centre line. But it does look the part, and thanks for the nice comments.
To fire it I would need a shooter's licence, get the cannon assessed by an expert, have the barrel proved with increasing loads of powder and shot, fired remotely, and make a vent. Worst though, would be that it would have to be stored in a locked weapon cupboard, which would be inspected at irregular intervals by the police. It would be nice, but just not worth the hassle, and I sometimes display it at exhibitions.
Hi Tabor, if you do a search for "Jerry Howell cannon" you should find the seller for the plans. From memory they were not expensive, and were very reliable. John.
Thank you! I am not an engineer either. It is just a hobby. And I do not make to sell. The materials for the cannon probably cost less than $AUD100. The main expense was for the brass, which was 50mm diameter and 300mm long.
John V Not everyone are speed readers! And why in the hell would people want to keep pushing pause just to be able to read the captions? I hate videos like this! Why didn't you just explain it through talking instead of Speedy captions?
Explained in the comments. I could have remade the video along the lines you suggested, but you know what....enough viewers accepted its limitations and liked the contents as is, that I am not going to change it just for grumpy bastards like you.
@@johnv341 HA... TOLD ! Good on ya John... but I would have called him a lot friggin worse than that. As if it's so friggin hard to push the pause button. What a wanker
What’s the go with the text being on screen for a split second having to constantly stop and back up the video to get it in the exact right place to be able to see the text properly is ridiculous watching a video should not be so much work
