Making a Mosaic Globe

have tried my hand at another globe project. I wanted to experiment with making a sphere from a 20-sided object (icosahedron) of equilateral triangles. I laid out the map of the world onto those 20 triangles as a mosaic of scrap pieces of wood. I poured resin in the gaps between the pieces of wood that I had glued down to the map. Then I cut the map into the 20 triangles. Next, I cut the angles into the sides of those 20 triangles and glued those triangles into an icosahedron. I turned that object on the lathe into a sphere and it became an impressionistic and recognizable globe.

Have you thought about building the icosahedron first with the drawn lines outside and then gluing blocks on top of it. In this way you can see how it will look when gluing. After that you could cast it in a cylinder (which would probably fit into the vacuum chamber) and then turn a Sphere from that.
@BLenz-114

Yeah, I was going to suggest making a full wooden sphere first and then gluing blocks, resin-ing, and re-turning. Same idea.

I could stare at that for some time. It is almost like a bug eyed view from far above a city. I am not sure how much of a globe I see in it, the triangles do almost hide that aspect, but sometimes its not what you were trying to find, but what you got while looking that is interesting.

If you made each triangle a different color of resin without any wood, that could be interesting. A full resin orb.
@Prophes0r
@Prophes0r 2 года назад
If you wanted a blue effect for the ocean, maybe you could have stained the wood a bit before gluing it into the triangles? Also, you could incorporate the triangle seams into the final design by having the initial wood scraps all be triangular. It would probably be pretty wasteful though. But it would definitely help if it was all tessellated.

always a fan. great video. One thing with degassing resins is that they form bubbles when moving across surfaces. I am no expert in wood + resin. I liked the construction method, if you degassed and then poured the resin in pieces that would fit in your vacuum pot you would degas the entire triangle, from the bottom to the top.

I really think you are on to something very creative. If you got resin that was relatively UV stable no reason why you could not put a light inside the sphere.

I definitely wanna see you tackle this one again. Maybe prepping each triangle individually would give you more control with how the final image comes out. It'd also mean you wouldn't have to worry about doing one large resin pour and all the problems that would entail. Downside would mean more waste, of course. Regardless, I had a great time watching this. Awesome work.

The contrast of the woods helps read it as land and ocean. The contrast of the organization of those units makes it difficult to read as land and ocean. Like, the blocks of shapes in the ocean “want” to be organized linearly especially if those blocks are to be read as a whole ocean unit. But of course I could never conceive of attempting to build this thing so take that criticism with a bunch of salt.

I *think* if you had even smaller, like matchstick size pieces of wood, the triangle-seams might not seem so jarring? But that would be so much more annoying to cut down *and* glue up, I know. Unless you used actual matchsticks?
@paulsmyers203

For a sphere that size and the time you put into it, I think it's pretty great. The very first view of the completed globe I was able to immediately say "That's Africa! And Madagascar!" Obviously if you made it bigger with this size blocks, or used smaller blocks on this size sphere, there would be more detail but it could have taken 10x as long :D I agree the seams need attention. And there's something about the ratio of resin, or the size of the ocean pieces, that just feels a tiny bit off. It could be the color variation, and maybe your comment about making the resin yellow tinted would improve that. But it's definitely a cool project. You seem to have settled on 20 sided triangle / icosahedron based spheres. Have you given any thought to trying other more complex polyhedrons again?

Instead of the blocks being square shaped, you can use 3- and 6-sided shapes so they blend in with the final triangles. Also, orienting all the blocks to their final radial position in the sphere would reduce the choppyness. It would be a pretty hard to setup for an all wood piece like you've done before, but with this resin design you could put play dough in the bottom of all the triangles and press your pieces into the correct angles to point to the final "center". Then, just pour the resin and proceed like normal.

Frank, one suggestion might be making the scraps into triangles instead. I think a lot of that contrast might get dulled down by having a sea of triangles. Right now you have rectangles turning into triangles/rhombuses at the edges. Might be worth a test at least to see if it meshes a little better.

My goodness, you provide so much information about how to make a icosahedron. Lots of details and a practical way to make the triangles. And it's fun to watch as always You say that the angles cut on the edge of the triangles are all the same. But you never tell us WHAT that angle is! If anyone were to make a icosahedron they would have to have this critical piece of information. Strange omission Edit. Well I went down a 20 minute rabbit hole in search for the angle that you cut for the three edges. Not easy to find. Complex calculation. The angle is 69.095° where vertical is 90°.

You laid out the pieces in the jig horizontal to the jig. Maybe they should be inserted horizontal to their final position - grid lines on your world map would help. Re the edges of the triangles you could start with 2/3 size matching pieces in two or three set measured positions on each edge, knowing they would butt together, then infill thereafter. The visual impact of triangle edges might be reduced if the sea/land flowed across them. Other ideas; lay sea in to appear horizontal & land in vertical, have the 7 continents in individual wood colours, or even differing 2 colour sets As they say the devil is in the detail !!!
@malachilandis9542
@malachilandis9542 2 года назад
Hmm, I wonder if you could make the epoxy some sort of mix of wood chips and epoxy. The differences between the triangles seem to be most apparent in the oceans, so maybe adding chips would blur those boundaries a bit? I wonder if you could repeat this style but with dowels? You could drill holes in the plywood base to locate all the pins, and perhaps use small dowels. That might let you plan out exactly how the dowels would meet.

I think you could hide the seams between triangles better if you used scraps that were themselves triangles. I think you’d want a distribution of sizes and try to avoid patterns in the layout but keep a general orientation (or rather, two orientations, up and down) to the triangles. Then if the seams happen to cut some of the triangles the seams will be in the direction of some lines that are already in your pattern. Also you should totally take advantage of then hollow sphere and put some LEDs on the inside.
@Marco_Pan
@Marco_Pan 2 года назад
just spitballing here, what if you make a map with inlayed continents, place it face down on the waste board, then use a V bit on the CNC to cut the path/lines that makes up the icosahedron template (cut channels similar to the annimation at 0:07 of your video). Then all the seams that are touching on the template would just need to be "folded" over on each other, and you wont loose any material from cutting the triangles. ps Im not sure what the angle of the V bit will need to be or if any companies make that angle

I had to scrub back to roughly 6:00 because I thought I recognized the Cougar Gold tin. My cousin went there and sent me a few tins. Fantastic cheese!

I guess for the pattern to be without seams - you seem to have no other choice then building the sphere from the ground up - without using triangles... like the internal sphere made out of anything cheap, or some kind of balloon, then glue your parts of the chosen pattern there - perpendicular to the surface of the sphere, then make some sacrificial outer shell close to the size you need, put the insides in the shell, pour resin and you have your ideal sphere with the proper pattern. Please check other channels who do that - it's easy to find))))

Perhaps you could make an inner sphere and then stick the pieces of land / sea wood to the sphere. That would get rid of the triangles completely. You'd have to put the whole thing into a box and pour the resin.

Would it have been possible to cut the bevel using your CNC? If it hadn't warped in the oven, you could've done the bevel so the bottom of the piece is seamless, and the seams would've ended up on the inside of the sphere.

Watching a few youtube videos on resin and wood tables. Superglue seems to work well in filling air bubbles on the surface.

I think it might have done better if the bits of the water weren't all in the same orientation. If they were at all angles, and not all rectangles, the seams of the triangles wouldn't be as jarring. The land looks fine to me, though, because it's fairly solid.
