Hi. I think hinges should be installed more deep into box? 9:34 Without protrusion on back side.

I know you do a lot of boxes with hinges. I also like Brusso but the issue I'm having is when routing the motive using the hinge template I find it near impossible to get the lid, which has much less height than the box it fits on. So when doing a lid/box hinge how do you get the two coplanar so that the mortise is equal on both the lid and the box? Would you consider doing a video on that because I cannot figure it out and the is AFTER I spoke to Brusso about it. Their solution was to build a riser that is equal to the height of the box base and then clamp everything together. That makes NO sense. Thank you for your help in advance.
@parillaworks
@parillaworks 2 года назад
This was the first time I ever routed the lid and box at the same time. Usually I’ll do them separate for the very reason you stated. It can be kind of complicated to set up properly.

But the hinges stick too far out the back! They are meant (at least) to have the centre of the hinge pin at the back face. Or, if you chamfer the back corners, you can mount them flush. Proper job.
@parillaworks
@parillaworks 3 года назад
These ones from Brusso seem to stick out, same for their normal butt hinges.
@Tensquaremetreworkshop
@Tensquaremetreworkshop 3 года назад
@@parillaworks Only if you let them. Clue- the top and bottom of the hinge end are square- if they were meant to stick out they would be round. They are flush fit hinges.
@parillaworks
@parillaworks 3 года назад
I understand what you mean. Every photo that I see on Brusso’s website shows them not flush. And I use their official templates, which results in them protruding. I’m fine with them protruding anyway, it shows off the nice hardware.

John, beautiful work as always. I've been watching a bunch of your videos recently after learning that you use the dowelmax frequently, and because I have one on the way. Using the stop pin as your reference instead of feeling for flush with your finger is very clever, and a trick I'll be adding to my arsenal.

Nice work! Quick question… did you sneed to shorten the shank of the guide bushing to use with the Brusso templates? If so, how did you do that?…if not, which short shank bushings do you use! Thanks in advance.
@parillaworks
@parillaworks 3 года назад
Thanks Sandra! Yes I had to shorten the bushings a little bit. I used a hacksaw to make as clean of a cut as I could then filed it somewhat smooth. It’s not perfectly even but it works.

Very nice indeed. A quirk of mine is that I like the inclusion of sap wood on walnut particularly. It does make (for me) a more interesting result. I don’t know the particular hinges that you used but I think I am right in saying that this style was invented by a guy called Andrew Crawford here in the UK. Look him up under Smart Box Maker. I have used many of his hinges and they are superb quality. He teaches how to install using an 8mm bit in the router table. Once you understand the idea, it’s very accurate. I like the look of the lock - one to search for

Hi Martin. Thanks for the comment. I just looked at the Smart Box Maker site. Looks like some beautiful hardware. I’ll have to give them a shot one of these days. I think I’m partial to a more brushed finish but a client may prefer polished eventually. Thanks!
@martincox7354
@martincox7354 3 года назад
@@parillaworks Andrew is a perfectionist - I spent a couple of days with him making a box - which is by no means a criticism. He seems to have had considerable trouble finding a manufacturer for the hinges who will provide the accuracy and consistency that Andrew demands. It seems like that this issue is now resolved - I hope so because the “little guy” is having tough times.

Very light pressure with 80 grit and an orbital sander. Gotta be very careful not to roll over the edges though.
