Coronavirus Quarantine: Video 2- March 17
I will be trying to post simple daily videos for inspiration for my students and my subscribers to help give us some learning and distraction during this national emergency.
In this video, I show how I throw a wheel thrown pitcher with a pulled handle. I am using about 3-3.5 lbs of stoneware to throw the pitcher. Once I center the base of the hockey puck, I open the form keeping a flat bottom and square corner inside. When pulling up on the walls, I concentrate on keeping the form slightly tapered inward so the top does not get large. Once thinned, I shaped the cylinder into a form which I like for pitchers. I keep the rim a little thicker at this point. Then, I mark where I want the thinned spout, and I lightly pinch the rim, thinning it between my index finger and thumb. Once thinned, I make sure it is symmetrical, then I form the throat of it by pushing in to create the channel through which the liquid will run. Once that is formed, I set it aside to get leatherhard.
I make the handle from a flattened coil which is tapered like a carrot. This is then attached by scoring and slipping. I then allow that to stiffen some. (About 15 minutes) Once that is stiffened some, then I use my thumb and index finger and water to thin, and pull the handle, stretching it while thinning it. Gentle pressure and delicate handling is a must for this. It takes practice. Don’t give up! :) You could also make a handle off the pot and attach of course. Dry your pieces SLOWLY by placing in a damp cabinet for a bit, bag hatted, or perhaps covered with a heavy towel.

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/s...
I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

Beautiful pitchers. It would be nice to see how you glaze these and how they look when finished. Is pulling handles easier than hand building/forming? Thanks so much for these tutorials!!!

I can do a video when I glaze! Of course, I’m out of school now for a bit... pulling handles isn’t necessarily easier- just different! I just wanted to show an alternative way for my students! :)

I love these ridges (I mean the spiral texture) . Could you show us how you do them? I tried once but they didn't look nice.

Those are throwing rings. Here’s a video explanation of how I do them! Three Easy Ways to Make Throwing Rings or Spirals While Throwing on the Potter's Wheel ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C3QzFR0S4Gg.html

Your videos would be much better if your camera was looking over your shoulder so we see what you see and the correct way to position hands. When you were making the spout we couldnt see exactly what you were doing. But other wise I just love all you videos, you make it easy to understand 👍🏿💖
