Thanks so much Mairead. It was a suprisingly simple, but really lovely sew. I always enjoy hand sewing. 😊 It has been a great coat to wear over the last couple of weeks. Perfect for Autumn. ❤
Thank you so much Mary. I was really please with the binding. It was nice to put the scrap to good use, and I love the way the colours go together. Thanks so much for watching today! ❤
Sew beautiful Amelia....really appreciate your sharing. I have 2 Berninas & the walking foot is fantastic for many layers of fabric, my machines also do embroidery & it is super rewarding & lovely to do.
Thank you so much for sharing your process! I'm excited to make a quilted coat and I've had this pattern for so long. Now I finally feel mentally prepared to start it. Thank you again, and your coat is absolutely lovely!
Hi Amelia, the jacket looks amazing and the binding just finishes it off with that burst of colour. It looks very snuggly and would be great for a Kiwi winter. I'm very tempted to give it ago for next year. Thanks for sharing. 💕
Thanks so much Suzanne, I am really pleased with how the coat turned out. The fabric is so snuggly and I have been surprised at just how warm and cosy it is - perfect for a Kiwi winter! Thank you so much for watching today. ❤
The coat is beautiful, love the details. As far as sewing machines, I bought a Janome sky it was about 700 dollars, I really love the machine. The thing that I enjoy the most is the threads cutter. I no longer need to grab the threads and cut them by hand and it's saving me so much time. It does seem to work well with most fabrics, I am not sure how it would do with the material you used for your lovely coat. If you are thinking about an industrial machine Juki is solid, I have heard. If you could get to a store I would love to know how you find the machines. It's an investment and I hope you find one that really suits you. Cheers!
Thanks so much for your lovely comment, that is so helpful! I tried a couple of machines at the Knitting and Stitching show today and I LOVED the ones with a built in thread cutter - so helpful! I will keep looking and will definitely share the journey in a video soon. Thank you for watching! ❤
Hi Amelia. Love watching your videos and following along with you whilst I’m sewing too. I recently bought myself the Janome Skyline S6 (I’m in Australia) and I absolutely love it. I sew both woven and knits and it’s been great. I think it’s called Atelier in the UK though.
Thanks so much - I am glad you are enjoying the videos! I will have a look at the Janome, although I think I have finally setteld on a new machine, just in time for my birthday! ❤😊
Thanks so much Gemma. I am glad it was helpful! It was a really lovely pattern to sew up and I am loving wearing it. Looking forward to seeing your Hovea on Insta soon! 😊❤
Beautiful coat with well chosen bias binding. I just discovered you as I was looking for some thoughts on the Hovea. I have thrifted a sage green cotton quilt and was so inspired when I saw the photos for this pattern. I wonder what you would think about using a prequilted fabric with the collar band - view E? Thanks for you video!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I love this coat and I think a prequilted fabric would work with view E. If you don't follow @madebycathcraft on RU-vid or Instagram, you might like to check out her channel/feed as she just made that view of the Hovea with a pre quilted fabric, in case it is helpful! ❤
Thank you for the video, it was very nice. Your jacket is beautiful. I had this fear it may be too overly big, and hesitate to make one, but yours looks like a very nice fit.
Thanks so much Madelyn. I think it is an oversized fit, so I did size down using the finished measurements, and I am really happy with the finished fit. Thanks so much for watching! ❤
Lovely jacket. I hope to soon make a quilted jacket using a vintage pattern from the 1970's. I can't find quilted fabric so I'm going to quilt some fabric from my stash.
Thank you! Quilting your own fabric sounds amazing, and I would love to try a vintage pattern one day. It sounds like your quilted jacket is going to be amazing! ❤
Hi Amelia - have a look at the Janome 5270 I’ve recently upgraded my old non computerised Janome for this model from Jaycotts - lovely machine - I’ve also got a Janome overlocker which I also really enjoy using - good luck 🤞🏻🤗
Thanks so much for the recommendation! I have chosen a machine now - just waiting for my birthday so I can unwrap it and start using it. I am so excited! I love my Janome overlocker - it is a great machine! Thanks so much for watching. ❤
Hi! Yes, I will definitely share the journey in a video once I have made my decision - I want it to last me a long time, so am thinking long and hard before I buy one. Thanks for watching! ❤
Hi Amelia, great fabric choices. How did you cut the bias binding out ? 8 m is a lot from scrap fabric ? I have some liberty leftovers too I would like to use. I might use them as the sleeve frill on dresses for my granddaughters perhaps using the “ oh me oh my” bubble patterns I think. I shy well away from hand sewing, I should give it a go. You make such lovely things and so quickly.
Hi Jenni, thanks for your lovely comment. The coat came together surprisingly quickly. The only slow part was the hand sewing! Using the liberty fabric as a frill is such a great idea, I must look up that pattern as I love a bubble! I had a nice little rectangle of fabric leftover, so I just cut out a bunch of 2" strips on the bias and then pieced them together on the machine until I had 8.1m of binding. Thanks so much for watching! ❤
Thanks Judy! I didn't prewash this time. I normally do, but I plan on handwashing the coat when it needs a wash, so I didn't prewash this time. It was a lovely sew. Very straightforward and really enjoyable. ❤
If you buy a new machine, look for a more powerful one. I think it’s called rpm. I usually get 1500 rpm. Then you know it will be able to sew many layers. You’ll pay more for this but it’s worth it. All the inexpensive machines are not powerful.
Love your snuggly new jacket for autumn! It was fun seeing your process and I'm excited for you getting a new machine - you'll have to treat us with an unboxing when you decide which one you decide to purchase. I have an Elna 780 that I adore :) You might also like to see this video on making continuous bias binding ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jPZ0IpopUPs.html that I always refer to when I need to make up some :) She has a number of videos that I quite like. Thank you for another inspiring video!
Thanks so much Kathleen. I will definitely have a look at that video as it sounds a lot easier than sewing it all together piece by piece. Although I often use scraps for my binding, so I would have to make sure I had enough! This is such a cosy coat, I really love it!
