In this video, bladesmith Walter Sorrells demonstrates the making of a knife from a railroad spike. This is a classic forging exercise which results in a knife that's a little crude...but makes a fun shop tool. There are many ways of making a knife from a railroad spike and this is just one.

Thanks for this video. I have recently built a small forge and an anvil from a piece of RR track and am discovering the like most things, forging a knife is not as easy as it looks... And you make it look very easy! After coming in from the shop very frustrated this was a nice reminder to calm down, have fun, and that practice makes perfect.

Thanks walter I'm glad you made a video on this process. I have forged a few spike knives myself and they do indeed make great practice on drawing out metal, flatting, twisting and tapering.. etc . Also there are plenty of other things to make other than knives with that hunk of medium steel. I been making steak turners and hooks and bottle openers and such and they are a blast to make but a BLAST on my arm lol.. drawing out the spike till its over a foot long from a forge that I been experimenting with wood only(pallet boards, and the oak support for them I chop up into nice squares).I need to make me a propane forge.

@WalterSorrellsBlades
@WalterSorrellsBlades 8 лет назад
+Crafted Magazine I think I switch hammers several times in this video. Normally I use a three pound hammer -- which I strongly recommend not to do! -- but in this I'm also using a 2 1/2 pound hammer and a ball peen hammer that's probably 16 ounces? Maybe?
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 8 лет назад
Walter Sorrells thanks Walter. Is a 3 lb hammer too heavy in your opinion?
@skintstudios
@skintstudios 8 лет назад
+Crafted Magazine not walter but yes, a hammer that heavy would be hard to get the fine control over needed in blade forging, after all you are dealing with steel only a few millimeters thick and only tenths of a millimeter thick on the bevels.

Love the way you took the head and incorporated it rather than leaving it as a tell tale. Forged in Fire did an episode of RR spikes and eliminated a smith because he did that and they said it wasn't a RR spike knife 'cus of that. Also at 4:03 or so when you re-centered the blade, thanks. I like your high tech stuff, but love the basic hammer and anvil more.

In my experience even mild hot-rolled steel will hold an edge. It will chop wood. It will cut fresh and it will penetrate armor easily. high carbon railroad spikes are good enough to make a good blade. Anything stronger then a railroad will cut thew other steels. Japanese Swords are a true challenge to any Blacksmith even if you have fancy tools. You do great work Sir.

You make it all look so easy. I always enjoy your work. I don't have a forge but you make me want to make one. I am disabled and can't do all the pounding with the hammer any more. I know I'm way late but, railroad spikes are best used to make hatchets. Flatten and shorten the head of the spike to form the axe end, point up and lengthen the spike end, put a hole for a handle between the two ends. Balance is your preference. And wala you have a hatchet, or an ice pick lol thanks and have fun all

I was an arson investigator, so I was able to look at two coal furnaces standing about 60 feet high. All of the iron they made was from recycled car parts, (axles, etc. )dumped into the stack, and melted and drawn out the bottom. Temp. was maintained by adding water spray! not very scientific, but effective for sending to steel plants. They had little idea what the exact contents were, that is carbon, etc.
