Check out a lot of the tips and tricks videos here on RU-vid. Grab some tools from Tandy or weaver just starting out. Then upgrade to higher end stuff like at Rocky Mountain leather

Not sure I understand what you mean by top pocket. But the reason why you have to fold the wallet is because the outermost piece of leather has to be longer than the interior piece. Otherwise, the inside wouldn’t fit right when the wallet is closed.
