In this video I show how I make a SCBA mask cover. This particular mask cover is for SCOTT masks. These covers are great for protecting fire fighter masks from ware and tare as they ride in the truck.
Leather used: 5-6oz Hermann Oak.
2-3oz suede.
Currently working on making this pattern available.

Awesome job, the ONLY suggestion I would make is to fasten the retainer strap and apply the male snap BEFORE gluing and stitching on the back panel... Gives a cleaner look on the back side AND it prevents any chance of the metal potentially scratching the mask, just my two cents 😊

I know this is a few years old, but do you happen to still know the name/brand of the matting texture you used in the background? I love the look of it and how seamless the stamps are. On the hunt for something that more or less has an organic rough texture for the background of my patches.

Really nice to see a project video! I like your background stamp. Which one is that? Also, I'm curious: When you use tape on the back for stamping, do you have trouble taking it off? In this case, I noticed you had some excess, but it doesn't matter because you lined the piece. However, what do you do when you don't line your piece? I find that pulling off the tape makes the grain side way fuzzier than it was, and also it's really hard to get off because it's stuck extremely well after stamping on it. It tears and I have small pieces left as you had. Any ideas?
@AttackLineLeather

The stamps is the craftool E294. Using tape on the back of tooling projects is definitely not a true science yet. Most of the time the blue tape comes off in one big sheet and i dont have to worry about the small pieces left behind. In this case, if a few are left behind, i dont really mind since im lining the project. As far as the leather becoming fuzzier, ive notice that this depends highly on the quality of leather. I use herman oak and thier rough sides are generally less fuzzy than say Tandy's Oak leather. In the past ive had really really fuzzy sides with lower quality leather. Ive also used clear packing tape, however no matter what leather ive used, i always had the stitcky glue residue stay on the leather and that is very very difficult to get off(impossible). Ive had the best results with the blue painters tape. This might make a good video topic
@Teyla91
@Teyla91 4 года назад
@@AttackLineLeather That would be an interesting video! I use painters tape, but the standard white/yellowish one. I don't know if the colours make a difference, I guess that's just for contrast for painters, or maybe not? I bought the TESA brand because it's supposed to tear less and come off cleaner than cheaper brands... but I've had some leather with an extremely smooth grain side that was really fuzzy afterwards.

Great video! only question is, with the button snap being put on after the suede liner is glued to the back, wouldn't the back of the snap rivet scratch the mask? would applying the suede (after the button is attached) cover the rivet and stop scratching?
@AttackLineLeather
@AttackLineLeather 4 года назад
Very solid observation, however ive had mine for about two years now with no scratching, but you can definitely sandwich the snap in between.
