Making a scrapwood chaos bowl pt: 1/2

In this first of a two video set, I attempt to reduce my scrap inventory by making a chaotic patterned bowl using the economy or bowl from a board technique. I've tried this before and had an explosively catastrophic failure at the lathe after investing a ton of labor. Lessons learned and applied from that experience. In this first video, I do what felt like an infinite number of glue ups with scrap to then cut into half disks at the bandsaw. In the next video, I glue those half disks into circles, glue them up into a bowl and then turn and finish.

I have never seen such a professional glue up.... working the angles. Pretty wide band saw blade and nice work turning and keeping on the lines, I was wondering when the down sized blade would come in... no way that first blade was going to cut that angle. Very nice work! t

Thanks for the nice comments! You're probably giving me too much credit but I appreciate it.

Thanks, and back at 'ya! I'll be rolling through So. Cal potentially including Santa Monica for work coming up in March. Lots of windshield time. Jeff

So, obviously, all those bits of wood are eventually all glued up with the grains NOT running in the same direction - is this not going to cause eventual problems with wood movement? I want to start practicing creating bandsaw bowls with scraps I have lying around but want to at least have a good shot at success...

@JeffMarxWoodworking 3 года назад
That's a great question, thank you. I am pretty confident that all of the pieces are small enough and the grain directions random enough that any seasonal movement should basically get cancelled out - not quite the same as the effect in plywood but close enough that it's a reasonable analogy. The randomness of the grain directions definitely creates a bit of a challenge while turning as you need to use good technique and nice sharp tools to prevent tearout as the grain direction keeps switching. I've had this and another similar bowl for years now with no apparent issue with movement. Thanks for watching and your question!

@@HeatherWrightArt When working on glued up projects that like to tear and chip out, I keep a bottle of thin CA glue at my lathe. I find making lots of little repairs along the way is realy helpful. Just make sure the glue is fully set before starting to turn again. Best of luck!

@@JeffMarxWoodworking Great tip, thank you! I seem to have pieces that always crack so CA glue has been a friend of mine, lol... I can't afford any nice pieces of wood yet so I work with what I can get. Thank you so much, you've been very helpful.

What angle do you cut your circles? Beautiful job !!
@JeffMarxWoodworking
@JeffMarxWoodworking 8 месяцев назад
The angle is a function of how steep you want the bowl. 45 degrees will yield a 45 degree bowl. You need to make sure there will be adequate overlap between layers to get a good glue bond and leave enough wood to turn smooth. I hope youbgive it a try, it's fun!

Friend, I speak from Brazil! How many degrees do you turn the table, please?
@JeffMarxWoodworking
@JeffMarxWoodworking 3 года назад
Bem-vindo. I tilted the bandsaw table 45 degrees. You can change this depending on the slope you prefer in the sides. Be aware you need to account for this angle in marking the circles to cut as you need enough overlap between layers for glue and to have enough wood to turn to a continuous smooth final surface. I hope you try one, it's really fun and rewarding. Thanks for watching!

What angle is your band saw table set at?
@JeffMarxWoodworking
@JeffMarxWoodworking 2 года назад
I believe it was 45 degrees, but you can make bowls with varying angles by adjusting that angle. Thank you!

I'm going to reserve my comment for part 2, but I suspect that you just taught me a new method of making a concave object with a very high profile out of a flat object with a much lower profile. Can't wait for next week!

The "bowl from a board" or "economy bowl" technique is not mine but I really enjoy employing it and trying to find unique forms.
