Thanks ever so much Kenny, I have seen a lot of instructions on making shooting boards, but this is the simplest and quickest. As ever another useful video.

Great video Kenny.. I've made several shooting boards but never thought of putting a dado in the base to catch the sawdust. That's a great idea and next time I'll use it. Thanks for sharing it.

I enjoy your attention to detail. The sawdust groove, the rabbet for coinciding with the edge of the plane and squaring the work surface with the backstop are essential for this project. On my way out to the shop to build mine. I will be doing two additional steps in mine due to my needs but your video is a great help.

Thanks for the information Kenny. Even at the high price I have to have one of these. Hard as I try I am always going to far on the countersink bits. What a great find.

Kenny, another great shop project. To be honest I had never seen a shooting board with a rabbet on the upper part. After seeing it that is a great idea. Thanks for the information and for sharing it.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 года назад
In my opinion Paul, the rabbet just puts lets strain on the planer and it is free to cut the stock without digging into the plywood of the shooting board. I just think it is a much better way to go. Glad to hear that you enjoy the show and found it useful. Thanks for tuning in to the show and taking the time, once again, to leave a great comment. It is very much appreciated.

I keep meaning to build a shooting board....and then get caught up doing something else and improvising, often badly!! I really like your simple design, and i'm finally going to build one! Thanks, Kenny! :-)

Glad that you liked it Norm. I too, spent too much time improvising badly and now have a useable version that I can enjoy, without the MacGyver factor. LOL. Thanks for tuning in. Good luck on your build.

The nice thing about your design is that it could be used for angled shooting boards as well. If anyone does Japanese woodwork, it would be handy to have on hand.

Your timing is perfect Kenny, had this on my to do list for so long now and had decided the other day to get on with it. I am using a lot of 2x1 on my current project, so have been cutting it by hand (have you been watching me saw - as I am sure you was copying me in this video LOL) so a shooting board is needed. Thanks for the great content.

wish i could do handwork but I'm right-handed and my right shoulder is gone they want to put a new one in but I'm too old for that much downtime so mostly power tools is my limit if I want to stay in the shop

Great show as usual. I love the idea of the dado on the bottom I have had problems with dust getting in that corner. I do have a question is the rabbet cut on the table saw needed won't the plane cut that rabbet as its used?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 года назад
Hey Carlo, thanks for dropping in. You are right, that the rabbet will be cut eventually with the plane, but by cutting it first with the table saw, it allows the plane to trim your work piece, uninhibited by also having to cut the ply, making the jig useable right from the beginning. I'm also not a big fan of using my planes on plywood. The mixture of different grain directions at the same time is murder on the blade and I would rather just cut it with the table saw, one time and be done with it. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in and for taking the time to leave a comment. It's appreciated.

Another nice Shooting Board version Kenny, would you consider making a ramped version and possibly adding the UHMW you mentioned?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 года назад
A ramped version would be great for this. It would instantly skew the blade of the plane and the UHMW plastic would reduce the friction and make it easier to use. This is definitely something that I would consider. Thanks for tuning in to the show Rob. It's very much appreciated.

Great video. I would like to know what brand of countersink bits you are using? Looks like there is a depth stop on it.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 года назад
Thanks for the kind words Chuck. The bit that I used in this video was given to me for my birthday last year. It has a drill bit that is sized for a number 8 screw and a counter sink that is also sized for that screw. You can adjust the depth of your countersink and set the ring so that the bit never drills any deeper than that. Although they are quite expensive, you only need one and they last forever. It was bought for me at Lee Valley and you can find it here. www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/power-tool-accessories/drill-bits/71860-carbide-countersink-drills-with-low-friction-depth-stop I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in sir.
