Cheap and simple sharpener "powered" with sandpaper. It can be done in one day from basic materials. The biggest advantage is cheap and generally available sandpaper which replaces dedicated stones.

Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night ru-vid.comUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

great idea mate i love how you can change the sandpaper so easily
@censusgary
@censusgary 5 лет назад
If you made several copies of the sandpaper holder (just that little part, not the whole jig), you could leave a different grade of sandpaper (60 grit, 200 grit, etc.) in each one, and you wouldn’t have to switch out the sandpaper pieces.

20° per side? That's 40° inclusive. Good angle for an axe, not a knife. What are the measurements for the one you made? What should a second slot for 10 degrees be? The "about 20 degrees" measurement is good for my axe, so it would be useable for that. A second rod slot for 10 degrees (+ or - 2 degrees) is needed.

Have you had any issues with the screw on pieces that hold the sandpaper hitting the blade? Maybe it would work better to hold them on the ends in line with the rod. No chance to catch the blade
