Dan that eagle logo is awesome!!!! The pickguard came out very beautiful, looking forward for the next video.

Dan was always the minimalist tool guy. You'd expect things like "building an entire guitar with just a chainsaw and a hatchet." Now with precision cutting implements, he is into a whole new arena of creativity. This is exciting.

I just had an idea: A Creality 3D printer and some clear resin for three-dimensional fretboard inlays. You'd need some creative planning to avoid the truss rod channel, but hey...I bet it'd look cool.

So the pickguard is absolutely killer, I love it. I've been thinking about CNC stuff, both a regular CNC like the Masuter and a Laser based CNC. One interesting thing is that so much can be done by laser, it makes me wonder if that isn't the right way to start. But we'll see. It's still a pretty fair chunk of change to put out first. But yeah, really cool.

When you turn your volume and tone knobs do the cog gears work in the pickguard?

Dude that would be sick! Might need to redesign it to do that!

Cool laser. I also like the Steampunk aesthetic you are going for with the scratch plate. I think I would be tempted to use a dark brow stain on the top layer and cover the 'gears' in something like copper tape although the ideal finish would be more of a dirty bronze. Not sure what I would do about continuing the theme on the body though, I would probably end up referencing some old computer games that use the theme like Thief: The Dark Project (a really good old game to check out if you ever have the time).

Try an EVH style "Atomic Steam Punk" striped detailed paint job on that guard and you'll have an absolute winna, winna, chicka dinna!!
@rindred
@rindred Год назад
That pickguard would be really cool if you put in a translucent piece of plastic - sandwiched between the wooden layers - to make it look like frosted glass, then have some LED lights underneath. The things on top of the pickguard could be painted, but everything behind the "glass" would just be a shadow. It'd make the whole thing look like a mad scientist rig.

Hey man have you tried cutting thin sheets of brass and copper to incorporate their use for gears in your steam punk designs.
@anvildesignartphotographyl5646
Glass or mirror cutting? I can't seem to find if you can cut glass or a mirror with this, have you tried? I have seen black mirrored acrylic cutting though.

I had a steampunk bass I built years ago. A fun thing you can do is take raw copper sheets or pipe fittings and put a little saltwater on them to tarnish them. There is also typewriter keys at the craft store that you can embed in custom knobs. I also took a brass peephole for a front door and put that through the body. It was pretty cool.

The more I watch you working with these lasers, the more i've seen how much it could make my life easier to make pickup rings, pickguard & Trussrod Covers. The problems for me have been the size, and price for myself. That pickguard however came out amazing, especially with the gears. Might haft to explore this more.

You need to be careful what you laser. NEVER laser vinyl materials. If you can smell it, you are breathing it. It’s highly poisonous and will eat your laser. A quick look up on Google will tell you that Rolex is vinyl. Records are vinyl as well. Your videos are really awesome, but don’t show cutting vinyl with a laser.

I recently got a Ric 325 style guitar kit. I bought a sanding kit 50 - 10k grit. Didn’t know wood could get this smooth. Now with Dan’s laser I could be really dangerous😂. Unfortunately it will be primer, paint, clear coat. Every other guitar I’ve done is stain and true oil.

Would you know where I could get a wiring diagram for an out of phase blend mod as mentioned in a video on the Fralin Pickups channel video titled Lindy Fralin mod of the month phase shiftswitch and blender. He has a blend pot to adjust the amount of out of phase pickup to an in phase pickup to get a quacky tone. He did not include a wiring diagram, the video is from Seotember 5 years old. I sent him an email, but no reply yet.

Though I love the look of wood in this case I would try an automotive supply store for metallic look paints for the gears and pickguard. The craft type paints just don't do it for me. Too bright and phony looking. The body I would probably just stain a deep rich color like mahogany. Anyway, make it look like something that the kid in you would be tempted to take apart to see how it works 😉👍

I think it'd be really cool if you took an existing gear mechanism that moved and powered it with a tiny motor. Maybe stick a small LED Behind it too so you get shadows of the moving cogs (maybe behind a translucent pickguard to provide depth for the shadows).
@billgilbride7972
@billgilbride7972 Год назад
Here's a thought, get a bunch of small alum dog tag type blanks, engrave your logo, rivet that onto the case or product. Stands out in my opinion. Not sure if the logo will come thru as noticeable as a bright metallic tag, imho. That way you do one session engraving 101 dog tags for future stuff.

small differences in the buildquality can have big impact on the product, esp in precision tools, such as a laser. that pickguard looks dope. too "bad" the woodgrain looks pretty nice on it, else the decision how to finish it would have been much easier :D

You know, one thing that is often amazing is an artist finding a new yet viable outlet for their creativity. The subtleties in simply modifying an existing instrument are many and varied to the point of constituting an artistic background. Remember that one controls how the instrument plays and sounds as well as how it looks. The modding thing has been my secondary outlet for a little while. It seems as if you have found a thing to run with. Go for the score, Dan!
