When I received the X-Carve 3D carving machine, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it...Make an Electric Guitar! This is my first time building an electric guitar. It's not a Gibson or a Fender, it's just a "Carmichael" and it plays great!

John Heisz Thanks John! I was quite impressed at how the x-carve ran for so long. It was a good endurance test. I don't think my 1 gal shop-vac is meant to run for 6 hours straight though. I checked on it every hour or so to make sure the vac was not on fire. lol

I don't think I explained the faceting thing as well as you did. lol It was fun finding ways to incorporate the X-Carve. I will be making another guitar when the shop gets a little cooler. What an awesome project Steve, I'm sure this is what Inventables had in mind when they sent out all of the X-Carve machines to everyone. They have to love seeing a beautiful project like this one coming off the CNC. I can't imagine the hours you had to put in designing and laying out your guitar nor can I imagine the forethought that went into planning and executing this project. Congratulations an the best thing I have ever seen come off an Inventables X-Carve. I love everything about your guitar. Regards, Bob

RJBWoodTurner Thanks Bob! This was quite the challenge but I learned so much. It's cool that a home hobbyist can have the same type of technology that the guitar companies have. I'm already thinking how to kick it up a notch for the next one. I think the machine can do even more of it.

Love this build, I would buy a guitar just like this from this guy. Being an owner of more than 30 guitars and having modified many more I feel like his attention to detail and explanation were great, yes this is just one way to build a guitar but for a non luthier this turned out great. Now I want an x-carve.

Thank you Greg! This was a lot of fun. I need to do another one soon. I have since upgrade to a Dewalt 611 on the xcarve so it should be a little faster. Looking back, I'm surprised the original small spindle did so well..

That x-carve looks like an amazing piece of hardware, I decided to build a guitar, but I didn't have anything like that, so I made it with files, rasps, and other various hand tools. I still have a long way to go, but it's coming along. Very nice guitar, I wouldn't mind owning a similar one myself.

Thanks! I've only made the one guitar with the original small spindle. I think it would be quicker with the Dewalt 611 that I have now, but depends on the bit and wood. It was a fun project. Good luck!

Steve, awesome! I've been a guitar player for years. Building one is on my list as well. I have a nice piece of mahogany sitting in the shop waiting to be made into a guitar. Nice job.
@SteveCarmichael
@SteveCarmichael 9 лет назад
***** Hi Jeff - It was a lot easier than I thought. The truss rod was no big deal. The frets went in fine. I'm not sure I would be able to cut the fret slots with a fretsaw without a jig to hold it in place. Shaping the neck was easy with that Stanley Surform File. Mahogany would be great. I think I will use that for the next one. Go for it man.

I’m glad I watched this I was considering buying one . But 8hours to cut the body 5 hours for the neck 4 hours for the fret board. You can do everything with a band saw and router in about 20 minutes
@SteveCarmichael
@SteveCarmichael 4 года назад
Yep, if you are looking for a speedy CNC that will compete with 20 minutes, you gotta spend lots more $$$$$. I still haven't made my second guitar yet, but when I do, I would probably cut about a 1/4" of the outline of the body and neck with the CNC, then follow that cut up with the bandsaw and router to finish it. Saws cut much more efficiently than router bits - Truth!

Wonderful job. I've done a lot of guitar stains. A tip I'd like to add, next time stain the guitar body black first lightly sand until only the grain is black and then Overcoat with the blue and you will get a much deeper contrast between grain
@SteveCarmichael
@SteveCarmichael 5 лет назад
Hi David, thanks! Yeah, I read about doing black first but didn't want to spend another $25 on another bottle of transtint. I will definitely do that the next time I dye a body though, cause it does look a lot better that way. Man, that dye is strong.
@mark5150ty
@mark5150ty 5 лет назад
@@SteveCarmichael I use KEDA DYE Stain Powder I buy the multicolor pack and off one pack I have done 12 guitars and I still have power left. Plus in my opinion this stuff is better than transtent. And it only cost $10 all together makes around a gallon of dye
@BarriePoole

Great work, boy I wish I had something like the X-carve back about 24 years ago, I had built an electric guitar with a very small amount of electric power tools and mostly hand tools and jigs... it took forever, I myself often will buy pre-made kits or do it yourselfer kits that have alot of the hard stuff done already and just a matter of painting and assembling one. I guess as I get older my patience wears pretty thin... haha Cheers and thumbs up!
@SteveCarmichael
@SteveCarmichael 8 лет назад
+Barrie Poole Thanks Barrie! Yeah, the cnc helps with the accuracy. It did take a long time for it to cut out the whole thing. I was kind of testing it to see what it would do, but it did everything I asked of it only pretty slow. I've upgraded it to the Dewalt router so it should do the next one much quicker. Good thing about the kit is that you only have to do the fun part. lol

That smile is infectious, but you killed me with "not bad for a drummer" bit. Awesome work there mate, can't wait to see your next model with better woods & maybe a reverse headstock?

+Tman Utube Thanks! lol Yeah, I'm a much better drummer than a guitar player, I think. ha ha

Wow it came out awesome! It's tone is really groovy! It has a unique tone similar to a telecaster I would say! You've even added a truss rod. This is one of my favorite builds and videos of yours, thanks for sharing!

Outstanding job on the guitar Steve, as mentioned earlier you need to play your own intro music for a bit of icing on the cake.

Steve Carmichael That machine certainly helps. Making those radius forms in itself could be a business. Will be watching for another instrument video for sure! One question, did yoy by any chance use quarter sawn for the neck? If not, how's it holding up?
@SteveCarmichael
@SteveCarmichael 9 лет назад
Dani El I don't think it was quarter sawn. I just used whatever I had for this first one. I'll be more pick on the next one. Seems to be staying straight so far.

Thanks! Yeah, the pickup set was the cheapest I could find, but it sounds fine for this first attempt at an electric guitar. Maybe I will splurge for better parts on about my 10th guitar. lol Only 9 more to go till then.

I'm planning of making a electric guitar, my old one finally died and found corrosion on the components except for the pick up lines, and planning to see if I can salvage what parts and re-make the body out of pvc pipes, might be a challenge but hey, I got it figured out in my head, plans are drawn and pray it works out well when christmas hits. nice build by the way and hope you make more in your future. ^^

Wood filler? Sorry if my initial comment came off as rude. And if not, I recommend a squier vintage modified stratocaster.

Thanks for this Steve. I've drawn the end section of the block and made the radius following the circumference of my desired circle and was trying to figure a way of turning the profile from 3/4" thick into something 8" long ( If that makes sense?) I think I'll go with your method. Thanks Trevor

This is an awesome demonstration of what the X-Carve can do. I hope to have one of these machines someday. I have a guitar, but only know about 8 chords, and half of them are difficult with my fingers to play. But a harmonica, I wonder if the X-Carve is up to that challenge! Thanks for sharing and I do want to meet you in person next month in KC.

Ron Briz Thanks Briz! You can play lots of songs with just 3 chords. lol I have a harmonica but never got good at it. Looking forward to meeting you in person too.

nice job, the hand carving was cool, I think I would of done the blue dye a bit lighter to show the grain more, but that's personal taste :)

Actually you can thick lacquer a neck. All you have to do to smooth the action up is just run a light sandpaper down the neck a few times.
