I wanted an external monitor for my laptop and DSLR. So I show you how I took apart an old HP laptop and created a portable monitor from its screen. I mounted the monitor to a piece of acrylic and bought the correct controller and screwed it to the back side. I have a standard laptop power input and an XT-60 power connector for a Li-Po battery, which I use when I'm away. It's great!

Any and all STL Files for this project are now available for download on my website! I also apologize for the Anakin quote. It was something of a running joke at work, because hey, how often do things actually work perfectly on the first try? I'm big on movie quotes, so... yeah. You'll come across one frequently. Even bad ones.I'm also so sorry about the audio issues. It's far too late now to do anything about it, and I certainly understand all your frustration, but I sure appreciate your sticking with me on this one.

i have the exact same monitor from a HP here. Just wondering why not leave the TFT enclosed in its original black housing. This way the hinges can be reused and its better protected for cleaning the front side.

That's actually a really good design, I've been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to work out how I was going to build mine, this is a really versatile and best of all portable design. I'll be hopefully using a small step up converter so I can run mine off a 2a usb plug though. Thanks for the inspiration

Hmm a USB step up to 12v sounds nice. So I can power it up via my desktop computer, via a USB charger, or via a USB power bank.

@ERRENTPRIM
@ERRENTPRIM 3 года назад
it actually is that simple. You kinda just need to know what to buy. What was kinda of glossed over in this video was getting the right power connector and power supply. I had a lcd monitor and controller sitting on my desk for a few weeks because I didn't have the right charger. Got one now, tho

Depending on the laptop you use for this you can sometimes reuse all or part of the original screen casing/frame(i don't know what it's called). It probably won't fit the controller but considering you have to build something anyway, modifying it can be easier.

Thanks to your channel, I solved a problem where LCD controller board (ext. monitor) and laptop have their own power supply. So, I branched my laptop's adapter cable, one line to laptop (19 V), while the other one to external monitor using step-down XL4015 CC/CV (12V-1A). Previously, I used LM2596 (CV), but the module exploded due to overheat. It's my first time did some project like this.

not sure if mike will see this, but i would LOVE a google doc for the 3D models he used to accomplish this, especially the corner clamps and standoffs. been wanting to do a project like this with 3 old laptops, and being able to duplicate the process this easily would make it go by so much easier/smoother.
