As a bartender, I'm loving these drink tutorials. They're better than the recipes at my bar and more fun to make.

I would like for all the drink recipes, project steps and science experiment information to be written out for each episode on the Modern Rogue website. It would be nice to be able read through it step by step when I do it, and be able to get a good idea of what I'm doing by watching you guys. Keep up the good work!
@stocktonjoans

it would be really neat if the website had a section dedicated to escapology and lockpicking, you've made a really good introduction to the topic in some of the modern rogue and scam school episodes and it would be awesome to expand upon that, you should also have a "sugested reading" page with sub sections on magic, scams, fiction etc but all focused arround the concept of the modern rogue, i can't wait to see how it pans out

It's so sad that Scam school is receiving so little views. With 1,5 million subscribers it should get at least 0,5m views per episode (1/3 of all audience), because it's a great show produced at high level!

Probably one of the best videos on making an old fashioned that I've seen...I would have probably just used regular water instead of soda water, but I don't really see it making a huge difference in the drink. Props on the Luxardo cherry!

@calmingsound5609 6 лет назад
I don’t care for the soda water, but the old fashion is different from bar to bar and mixologist to mixologist. I’ll usually muddle the sugar cube with 4-6 dashes of angostura bitters, and the orange peel, muddle lightly, I add 2 oz of makers mark, give it a little mix, then add ice, mix again for about 20-30 seconds to dilute slightly while also chilling the glass. I’ll garnish with a cherry and the original orange peel

@dhawthorne1634 8 лет назад
That was due to the amount of momentum you get with those larger bottles. Despite them being less expensive in purchasing, I only stock the smaller ones in my bar for the sake of better control. That being said, bitters is the main flavoring for an old fashioned, you can equate it and the splash of soda water to the volume of vermouth in a traditional Manhattan, Rob Roy or Martini.

The wife and I love old fashioneds (brandy for her, whiskey for me), and I saw this video but didn't feel like buying the sugar cubes and soda water. I made a tasty beverage in the spirit (no pun intended) of this using ingredients we already had: 1/2 tsp of brown sugar instead of the sugar cube, 1/2 tsp of OJ instead of orange peel, and a splash of diet ginger ale instead of the soda water. We already had Angrostur bitters and Bulleit Rye on hand. I mixed it similar to what was in the video. Not saying it was better than a true old fashioned, but we didn't need to spend part of our weekend going to the store... or ordering one from a hipster bartender. Anyway, cheers mate!

Rye Old Fashioneds are my favorite. So many people screw it up since there are so few ingredients. I'm not a fan of the orange peel in the glass or the use of ice cubes in the drink. The ice sphere or giant cube is best to not dilute the drink. IMO

Rarely do I mix anything with my bourbon, but when I do and people make my old fashioned with soda water and/or muddled fruit I immediately get angry. Sugar cube, bitters, peel (I'll allow a dirty cherry) but that's it. The water dumbs down all the flavours in my opinion.

Man, the bartender is right, I do think he's a heathen for how he makes this. Soda water, cherry, and orange added to it? argh. A real old fashioned is bourbon/rye, bitters, sugar, and ice (a tiny bit of water to dissolve the sugar is fine too).

Indeed, sacrilegious to add soda. While it's fine to add a splash of water when using a sugar cube, soda (as in fizzy water) is a real nono. If you'd serve it to me with soda I'd just send it back to the bar. If you don't want to fiddle around with sugar cubes then just use simple syrup and keep your fingers away from the water. You'll dilute it anyways when stirring. By the way: it's better to mix and stir it in a jug. When the drink is cold strain it into a chilled tumbler and use fresh ice. That way your drinks stays on point for longer. The maraschino cherry, well, it's a Mad Men thing - the original recipe just asks for a orange rind. At least the cherry hasn't been muddled in this one like they do it on Mad Men. If you want to get fancy: use an orange rind AND a lemon rind.

Good video, but we sell over 2000 old fashioneds a month at 'uptown' the bar I manage in Oshkosh WI, and that's way to much work for any one drink. I make a cherry and orange flavored simple syrup giving it a better flavor, and you don't have to muddle it! Plus I've Applewood smoked my syrup befor, to create wondrous effects. I would love to show you guys some time. Syrup is the way to go, but you hafta hand make it. This coming from the old fashioned capital of America, Wisconsin.

Two things. You need a dasher top for your bitters, it'll help you control those dashes. And soda water is what they put in their Old Fashioneds in the 80's,90's when no one cared about cocktails. Its a cheap club trick, and ruins the Old Fashioned. There isn't supposed to be carbonation in the drink. Its the only one of the hundreds of variables in the Old fashioned I cannot agree with.
