You might be right about wearing the rings acting as a natural polish. Our rings are plain stirling silver and left on its own it would tarnish quite easily but they've remained pretty shiny over the past 15 years because we wear them all the time so I wouldn't worry about it. Happy Anniversary to you and Kelly :)

For what it's worth, I wear a chainmail bracelet 24/7 that I made from bright aluminum. Regular aluminum may oxidize a bit and become darker (potentially coloring your skin a little) but it's actually quite durable. I've been wearing this bracelet for going on five years and none of the links have any noticeable wear or scratches. Brass and bronze accents tend to stay polished by daily wear as well. The rings look lovely and I adore your tradition!

I've found that you need a flexible wood species in the lamination mix to hold everything together and get it to plane off in a nice strip. You might have success by sandwiching your original lamination between two pieces of 'sacrificial' maple to hold everything together until you can get it around the ring and the glue in there to hold it together. Then just sand off the maple once you're done. It might still splinter out though, some woods just don't want to bend no matter how much you support them.

I always enjoy your ring making videos. I knew you had been struggling with this latest set from you talking about it on the podcast. As soon as you brought out the wenge and ebony, I knew why. Both are beautiful dark woods with tight grain, but they are very hard and brittle. Even if you tried steaming them, I don't know if it would have worked. Anyway, the final result is stunning and a beautiful addition to your lovely collection. Happy anniversary and many more years of making unique and special rings! Thanks for sharing!

Hey Dave. We met at KenCraft about a year ago. Anyway, a couple thoughts: 1. Tracy at KenCraft has a decent selection of thin veneers in the back. Just ask him if you can have a look. 2. I bought out an old retired guy who did marquetry inlay and I have a ton of veneer wood. Let me know if you’d like to take a look. I’d sell pieces cheap to you as I’m a fan of what you do! 3. I’ve made dozens of rings over the past few years. But you gave me an idea. Rather using the aluminum stock for the outsides of the ring, I’m going to try pre-1965 silver quarters. Just need to smooth one side before you epoxy them together. Then you can drill and rotary-tool the inside to size and then onto the lathe to finish and buff. Silver quarters are about $4.75 each today. 4. Rosewoods and other similar woods with higher oil content buff very nicely. But tougher to glue. Really need to dry them out with acetone immediately before epoxying to the metal. Should work ok. Otherwise walnut would epoxy just fine.
@ac.creations
@ac.creations 3 года назад
With exotic woods that are tight and oily I would recommend wiping with acetone to degrease where epoxy and glue will touch.

Hi David, Another great video thanks. Just one comment. I would reconsider using such hard metals like titanium. If anything were to happen where you would need to cut the ring off it would be very difficult. Most hospitals have ring cutting tools but those tools don’t work on titanium…don’t ask me how I know. If you do decide to use titanium, maybe combine it or segment it with a softer material so there wouldn’t be a concern. Cheers.
