In this video, I make 2 sets of dice for some of the Barbarian subclasses in Dungeons and Dragons using Blood & Iron!
Warning, this video DOES contain minor amounts of blood. View at your own discretion. Proper safety precautions and handling was enforced throughout the entirety of the experiment and disposal of any possible waste was done at the proper locations.

I like to try and make dice that nobody else has tried yet. AND UNLESS I AM SUPER WRONG, I truly don't think anyone has made the blood dice from this video. I also wanted to think of something pretty METAL for the berserker barbarian subclass, and I couldn't think of anything more metal than... metal.
I hope that you enjoyed this video. It is not titled as a How To video like the rest of my videos, as I don't want people trying this. I just hope you found it informational and educational at the very least. Let me know what class you might want to see in the next class video in the comments!

1. use dried blood which can be purchased from a butcher, it will have less moisture so you can put more into your dice, like a pigment 2. temperature sterilize the dice in boiling water 3. glaze in additional clear resin to seal in the blood resin, or put a bit of clean resin in the mold to coat the inside and set it first, then put in the blood resin

You could also just put it under a UV/blacklight for a few minutes which would kill off not just any pathogens on the outside but since its clear, also on the inside. I don't think its as much of a hazard really if you just take some small percautions.

The blood dice are completely safe IMO (3rd year collage of medicine) I get this comment won't change anyone's mind (probs won't be seen) but just wanted that out there. The reason used needles are scary are mostly Hep-C and HIV, for those to be spread two people's blood cells would need to come into contact. In this example that would involve cracking the dice open and using it to break open the skin of someone else within 7 hours of drawing the blood. (Assuming the heat from the resin isn't enough to kill anything) Even if you (blood donor) had HIV/Hep c/Hep B/ EB a coat of superglue/resin over the top of the dice would remove all risk, as would washing them in disinfectant/ rubbing alcohol. If anyone is still paranoid use pig blood. If you are STILL paranoid boil it first (Pigs can get Hep) then seek metal help

Since so many people are saying why are you being so cautious: he's a youtuber. If he didn't keep adding warnings this is what could happen: If a 6 year old watched this and decided oh im gonna stab myself for blood dice or whatever, he could be liable in a lawsuit. If someone used a dirty Lancet/ used Lancet and got infected, he could be liable. If someone made these in a non sterile environment and someone else got their blood into another person he could be liable. To constantly reiterate do not use these dice, do not do what I did, I'm working in a protected space ect, this keeps him from a lawsuit! If you had added anymore blood they may not have set right, given that blood is mostly water. I think those dice would have been safe to handle though given the resin incasing/ mixing with it. My guess is that just the heat from the resin curing would probably be enough to kill off potential bacteria, parasites or viruses that would be the potential risk. It depends on how hot the resin gets and for how long the resin is hot while it cures though. But yeah wouldn't recommend anyone to make something to use before they know for certain its safe. But it's probably entirely possible to make blood dice that is safe.

I'm a regular blood donor myself, so I know I'm clear of any blood-transmitting deases (and I rarely go outside, especially now), and I would use my blood with confidence while making such dice. I think coating such dice in thin outside layer of resin would put everyone at ease. I wouldnt mind handling them, even without an outside coat, as long as I know who the donor is. For cold casting, you should probably use metal powder (aluminum, brass etc), which is much finer than iron filings. First coat the inside of the mold with the powder, then add the powder to the resin so that it is about 1/3 of the total volume (for instance 1 part A, 1 part B, 1 part metal powder). It is also common to use black resin, so that the metal color looks more natural. When finished, the part can be buffed with steel wool to make it shine like real metal. It can even be polished to a fairly high shine. Iron powder tends to look like very dark metal, while aluminum looks more silvery.

@piebeisel
@piebeisel 4 года назад
Rybo, you did everything right for your cold casting. Your problems come in with the fillings that you picked. For the best results you want a super fine power for your coating; think lustre dust or pigment powder. The iron fillings were just too large and were pushed around by the resin when you cast. A fine dust can be applied with a brush to the walls of your mold and depending on your resin might not even need to be mixed into the pot. If you do mix it in it works like a pigment and will float suspended in the resin. The large filings are a just little too heavy and sink to the bottom. Totally not to say yours came out poorly, I like the look of the sedimentary-like iron that you got. With a good cold cast you can even buff or patina the exterior! You just have to be careful not to overdo it since it is a really fine layer of coating on the outside that can be buffed off if you're not watching. Great job man, keep up the awesome videos!

Hey Ry, try your hand at making some wooden dice! I know I can't be the only one who tangentially found you through DIY Woodworking stuff. I can think of a few ways to try. Obviously carving them (or shaping them with other tools) out of actual pieces of scrap wood or try casting them from wood filler (probably best to use a smush mold) or finally (and probably most reasonably) mixing sawdust with resin. Trying the sawdust thing would probably be easiest with the fine dust from the dust collector on a sander.
@QuarionGalanodel
@QuarionGalanodel 2 года назад
I think the sawdust is probably the best way to go but there are a few things you want to be careful of. 1. You want to make sure that it's fairly consistent particle size or the dice could be unbalanced 2. You probably want fairly fine particles so it might be a good idea to sift them like flour 3. Make sure that the sawdust is totally dried out
@CeeJayThe13th
@CeeJayThe13th 2 года назад
@@QuarionGalanodel my random orbit sander basically already produces a fine powder! The other things you say make a lot of sense. I made a Dice set for my friend that plays a Zealot cleric that worships a god of blood/death. I did more of a blood splatter on the external of the dice but it came out looking a lot like dried blood. I used citedel paints - Blood for the blood gods - for base blood splatter + a couple of globs to make it look congealed. - Evil suns scarlett (any light red / orange-ish red would work here) - laid a small bit where the splatters were a bit thinner, it looks like watered down blood, but when blood is spread very thin it can look like that. Almost like when your cleaning up a nose bleed off of a sink or porcelain. - If you have An iron oxide paint i'd recommend also doing a little touch up / detailing with that as well, as when blood dries, you can see a bit of that color in it. I however did not have an iron oxide color, but i did have a gunmetal alcohol ink which i mixed a little bit with blood for the blood god. The "blood" on the dice look damn close to being real, and thats coming from a guy who's had chronic nose bleeds his whole life.

The blood dice were cool, what a different idea, but EEK!!! haha Glad you're still making videos, even though you're busy. Remember to take a break if you need one. Keep being awesome!

I like the amount of experimenting you did in this video (you experiment in a lot of your videos but there were certainly a lot of unknowns with these sets.) I feel like these involved way more science than a Barbarian would have the patience for, but I have been surprised before. Hope you and your wife are doing well in this pandemic. :)

I'm def going to make some of those blood dice. I might go with a voodoo sort of theme and def use them. No worries, I have my own roll mat, so it will only be used on there.

Awesome dice! For cold casting you wanna get the finest iron powder you can get your hands on. It will coat the mold better and stay suspended in the resin better

I've never been that careful with my blood- I think especially encasing it in resin makes it safe to use and handle for anyone 😂 love your dice videos!!

For cold casting, the metal you use can't be granular or like glitter sized, it has to be ground to an absolute powder. Even then it will sink to some degree and throw off the weight of the die. But powdered bronze does stick really well to the insides of a mold so you can cast with opaque black resin and just have the surface be metallic. I've done it many times and it looks great. Just gotta do some touch-up with the sprue.

Absolutely love the blood dice! Shame they can't really be used to play with, but man they look cool. Personally I was thinking I would like to see dice based on races or possibly even different types of dragons and see what you can come up with. Dragonborn and Lizardfolk especially you can do some really creative stuff with.

If you wanted to go with just a /look/ of blood, you could pour clear resin in the molds and use a syringe with red dye to put it inside, like with aspics.

The iron fillings looked really cool. The density of weight of iron is heavy compared to resin. So the idea of miniature magnet works in this case.
@crimsonkidpyro

From what I could find 1 the metal to resin ratio is about 2 parts resin 1 part metal dust also cold casting is only really used to make an outer shell for the most part I believe roto casting the dice mold with the cold cast to get an outer layer letting it cure then filling it as you would any other die but this also made me think using roto casting to make a sort of layered die using different colors or material on different layers

@zacklothamer9533

I don't know if you've looked into it anymore but from what I've seen cold casting is purely dusting your mold with a metal powder for the resin to pick up before pouring the resin into a mold it allows you if you have a metal that is shinier like gold or brass or silver to shine that piece as if it were real metal

Hey Rybonator the blood dice looks amazing, if you ever want to cold cast dice you should use quick setting resin so it sets before the metal particles can sink out of suspension

Really cool set of iron dice! if you figure out the magnetic field of your magnets (size the magnetic field to your dice) you could maybe try to suspend it within the dice such that all the filings radiate out from the magnet. this would also make your dice ferrous tho

I want to see the blood vial set fully inked if it'd display only especially! Idea for a "Safe for use" set: 1: Take some playdoh (or any silicone safe clay medium) and use it to make some 'droplets' and 'whisps' of blood (Obviously these need to be big enough to see and take resin well) 2: Put them on tooth picks then attach the tooth picks to a wooden dowel to make a casting tree/tray mold. (The tree would allow for a cup but the tray would require a sacrificial trough or hell just use an ice cube tray.) 3: Cast the tree/tray in silicone and it'll be ready to use

Ever since i saw the magic 8 balls have dice inside with the fortune printed, i've thought about making magic ball dice with, well numbers! I haven't got the equipment or the passion to take on this project, but maybe you do? you could customize the ball color, liquid inside, and dice color! these would be great for people who lose dice off the table, although they would be bulky.

For cold casting, you need cold casting powder. It is much finer than filings and suspends easier.
