Join me today as I pre-make some generic bases for ephemera that I can decorate later as I need them. I am trying to have a stash built up that I can pull from when I'm making journals. I think it will come in handy and save me a little time assembling journals down the road. Do you have a handy tip that saves time in the craft room?
If you enjoyed this video, please like and subscribe. Leave any questions or comments below-I love reading them! Thanks for joining me today!

And making ephemra to stockpile so it's available to decorate pages. I think that's step #3.

Over the years I had collected a zillion calling cards. It finally dawned on me a couple of weeks ago that they were a great size for little journal cards. Most are 2 x 3. The backs are mostly nice colors and textures and sometimes there are pictures on the front that I incorporated into the decorating scheme. It turned into a whole bunch of cards that I was very happy with.

I bet your collection is lovely, Susan. What a great way to transform them into sweet journal cards. And the natural coloring on the old paper just can't be imitated. Calling cards also make great tuck spots and page tabs. They will be a pretty addition to the journals you make. TFW! 💖

That is a brilliant idea! Years ago I bought 500 business cards from a company but the color was way off. They printed new cards and told me to keep the misprints. I now have to find that box of "rejects"! Imagine the fun I'm going to have!

Just came across your channel and enjoyed this video! Your recipe cards look like ones I got years ago and finally took to the thrift store about six years ago, never occurred to me to reuse them. Thankfully. I hoard enough junk paper as it is!! I thought this past weekend how useful our printed church programs would be! They changed recently to double-sided half sheets of light card. I went around the pews picking up programs people left. Of course, I picked up trash and straightened the hymnals and Bibles as I went because that’s how I do things. (Hope the deacons were grateful I did their job!!) I have more trouble with glue than anything else in crafting-any kind of crafting. But I’ve had my Creative Memories corner rounder for more than 20 years, and it’s still doing well! Oh, my mother (BS in home Economics) always said to have the right needles for sewing, especially with your machine. If you sew on paper, only use those needles for paper and be prepared to get new (cheap) ones often. That’s just like we don’t use our fabric scissors for paper, right?!!
@CreatorsCall

I've saved many a church program myself for this very reason! I'm sure the deacons were very happy for your help. 😊 Have fun creating! 💖

You are the only person I have heard say: The only thing you’re not suppose to sew on is paper! I cracked up because I was taught the exact same thing!!!! (But no one has said that,lol). Ha/ha, as a matter of fact when I started my junk journal journey, I rarely sewed paper as I was freaked out if I did it would damage the machine that I had waited years to have. To combat the anxiety I bought a nice inexpensive machine that I can sew all the paper I want. Just cleaning it more often would have been fine but I was too old school. Lol vintage me! Thank you for the wonderful tutorial!

Every time I sew on paper I feel like I'm really pushing the boundaries by being so "naughty". 🤭 The only thing I won't do is use my fabric scissors on paper, no-no. Sounds like you came up with a great solution to your "problem". Thanks for watching, Michelle, and for the chuckle today! 😄👍💖
@terriebrockmann9497
@terriebrockmann9497 Месяц назад
The same ones who told me this also had us sew lines (straight, curved, zigzagged, etc.) drawn ON PAPER! LOL! It is because it dulls the needles. Our home ec teacher had a small box of used needles just for the paper practice pieces and the test paper pieces.
@leeannsutherland858
@leeannsutherland858 3 дня назад
I was always told it was bad for the needle would make it to dull for fabric, same with scissors……so don’t use your sewing scissors for paper crafting and change you machine needle if you’ve been sewing paper

Somehow I didn't know I could make tags or journal cards this way! I've always used one piece of whatever, and wrapped it all around the base. I like how you do yours though, by just covering one side with your pretty papers! This way seems so much easier, and leaves the back sides blank sometimes, for journaling. I'm fairly new at this, and happy to learn another way of doing things, so thanks so much for this video!

I do scrapbooking, and journaling in store bought books, but I am new to junk journaling. I don't have a lot of stuff, or a lot of money, so I'm looking for ways to do this on the cheap, but make it awesome. Thank you for all the great advice.
@CreatorsCall
@CreatorsCall Год назад
From what I've heard, the junk journal movement was a response to scrapbooking. It was intended to give people a way to create pretty projects without having to spend a ton of money. I think that's what I enjoy most about making junk journals - making something useful and pretty from ordinary inexpensive supplies. It appeals to my frugal heart, LOL. I'm glad I could give you a few ideas. I have another video on where to find free journal supplies that may give you a few more ideas... The best advise I heard from many instructors is: use what you have. Make your sprays, make gesso, use all paper you already have, such as used printer papers, cereal boxes to make journal covers, scraps of paper & ribbon to make ephemra. Mark makers can be lids & caps from small medicine or toothpaste. Plastic comb, bubble wrap or anything with a design. Search on-line how to make many things you can use. Start simple & cheaply & watch videos that don't use a lot of purchased items. I avoid those since it can make you think you need all that purchased stuff, but you don't. Now that I have made made 2 journals, I do have a lot of stamps and bought EVERY one at a thrift store---usually a bag for & $3.00.
@CreatorsCall
@CreatorsCall 3 месяца назад
That is expert advice. Thank you for sharing it with us, Marilyn. It makes sense and (to me) feels so much more enjoyable to use up what is already available for supplies. Apply a little imagination and creativity and... voila - a masterpiece is born! TFS! 💖

First of all, enjoyed your video in more ways than one! The glue stick you use is the only one I have found that really works. Now a "stupid" question, what in the world is the real difference between a journal card and a tag? 👍👏🤔🏷️
@CreatorsCall
@CreatorsCall Год назад
Not at all, I appreciate you asking the question! Truthfully, the decision to call something a tag or a journal card is somewhat arbitrary (at least I think so). The main differences in my eyes are the size and whether or not the piece has a topper on it. The tags seem to range in size from very tiny to jumbo and usually have a tag-like shape to them. Then a topper or pull of some sort is added to the top. Sometimes the shape around the top of the tag is a little more decorative and there are many punches on the market that help achieve the pretty shape. That what makes it seem like a tag to me. The journal cards are generally a little bit larger sized, such as 3x4", 4x6" or 5x7". They can be larger or smaller than these dimensions, but usually are just a rectangle or square shape. Often you see the corners have been rounded on them. And they have space to write on the back (but then again, so do the tags). I think of tags as longer and skinnier with a topper or the corners cut to look like a tag while jc's usually are a little bit wider rectangles/squares with no topper. This is a long answer, but I hope it helped clarify the differences. The main thing is whatever you choose to call the item, that's what it is. The definitions are a bit loose. 🤗💖

Try flipping the punch around and then punch.. This way you know for sure that the papers are aligned properly to punch Also you can see while punching if the pressure is enough etc

@CreatorsCall
@CreatorsCall Год назад
I used double-sided tape almost exclusively when I was first making mini albums (before discovering junk journals). Over time I've drifted to using a variety of adhesives. I still prefer the double sided tape for adhering book spines and attaching papers to the inside covers of the journals I make. The tape can sometimes be a little sticky when sliding things in and out of pockets, but I like the certainty that it provides when I want to be sure a journal will hold together long term. So riddle me this does everyone have a stack of journals that they've made and they just need to be decorated or do you make a journal and decorate as you go
@CreatorsCall
@CreatorsCall 8 месяцев назад
I think it depends on the person. I've heard RU-vidrs mention that they typically have several projects going at once. For me, I work better linearly - working on one project at a time until it is finished. The first journals I made, I created everything (ephemera, pockets, etc.) as I went. It took a long time to finish and I was tired of the journal before I got done with it. With this method, I can have ephemera made and just tuck it into a journal and it saves me time on the finishing end. You just need to figure out a process that works for you which happens as you make more and more journals. Hope this was helpful. Thanks for watching and for your good question. I suspect many others have been wondering the same thing. 💖

Hi Leslie, thanks for the tip. I used UHU way back in my early scrapbooking days, but switched to other products over time. I should give them another try. TFW! 💖

I’ve tried several glue sticks after seeing them used so much online. Quick and easy, but later the tags I made were coming apart. Thumbs down on glue sticks.

Yes, it's so hard to find a good one! I use wet glue more often because it's permanent. TFW Rosemary! 💖

10 years nothing! Mine come apart in about 2 weeks! I HATE regular glue sticks! I ALSO don’t know how you glue shiny stuff. Those ALSO come apart and I used MOD PODGE! The Local Chapter of the Button Club! Sounds like a great title for a book!

That does sound like a book title! 😂😂 That's so disheartening to have your hard work fall apart right after you've put your heart and soul into creating something wonderful! 😠 I wonder if humidity plays into it at all? Our climate here is fairly dry so I think certain glues work better than others. On the other hand, I think others are too sticky (i.e. Scotch Creates glue sticks). I'm having good success with the Elmers Craft Bond glue sticks and the purple school glue sticks, also by Elmers. I'm fairly certain I didn't use enough glue in those scrapbooks all those years ago. There are so many glues available now, but I am still unsure what to use for glitter cardstock or slick papers. The Beacon glues - Fabritac or Fabrifix - work well on plastics. As I return to scrapbooking, I think I will use more Art Glitter Glue and Fabritac for the bulky, slippery stuff. I used mostly photo mounting squares back in the day because it was the only thing that kept everything stuck to the page. I was in Cozumel a couple of years ago and my watch band fell apart because of the high humidity. It just came unglued! 😩 So I wonder if your climate plays a part in your glue not sticking? Just a thought. I feel for you though, I really do. TFW, Sandra! 🤗💖

You know, I tried it and it was too sticky for me. I know lots of people use it with great success though. I wondered if it had something to do with my dry climate. 💖

I cheat the gold paint along the edges by using a wide tipped gold or silver metallic Sharpie marker, the oil-based kind that needs to be shaken up and primed. After I prime the marker I run the edges of the cardstock along the marker tip. 😉

It's so hard to choose. Glue sticks are great for decoupage, but on the whole I'm not a fan. Back when I started scrapbooks for my kids all we had were glue sticks for adhering pics. Within a decade the pictures were coming off the pages. Very sad. TFW! 💕

I use glue stick and matte Mod Podge through a needle topped applicator. It is sort of the best of both adhesives without the embellishments falling off in a month.
