Copper sulphate used to be really easy to buy - I remember using it to make crystals - because when I was a kid, making crystals was an _AMAZING THING_ :)
@joeledwards6587
@joeledwards6587 Год назад
here in South Africa it's available in most pharmacies, just pick it up off the shelf, very cheap too. What other cool things can we do with copper sulphate? I saw some videos that said you can make blue/green flames by dissolving in alcohol but I tried and it's not soluble in alcohol, lol, though it does give a hint of colour to alcohol flames

@@joeledwards6587try using methanol instead. Can find it at most car parts places as a fuel additive. Copper sulfate is insoluble in ethanol (most likely the kind of alcohol you used). Ethanol is alcohol you drink. Methanol is another type of alcohol but is highly toxic if ingested.

You can also use acetic acid on copper to make copper acetate and add baking soda to the copper acetate to make copper carbonate . Btw love you video great work.

Btw copper and dilute acetic (vinegar )do not react quick so i added h2o2 which helped

Soluble carbonato-complexes gave the supernatent the intense blue color. It's the best to use a mixture of sodium carbonate and bicarbonate to precipitate the product with maximum yield.

Thank you for, somehow, going through my backlog of stuff i want to do, lol. Decomposing bicarbonate looks really cool. When you shake the pan around it looks like it's boiling, from all the CO2 being released. It also flows across the bottom in a really unnatural looking way, as it kinda floats on a gas cushion, giving almost no friction.

I can't believe you're still using that same mortar and pestle, but then looking at the rest of your equipment it fits. You definitely need some sponsors.

You could have just electrolyzed copper anode in a concentrated baking soda solution, it’ll precipitate out and not waste any redox cycling :)

Please make copper complexes! I think the basic copper carbonate is a really good intermediate as the carbonate will just decompose into CO2 and the basic nature allows you to react it with acidic ligands pretty easily. Since you are going to make pyridine via B3 vitamin, why not complexes from food-related compounds? Things like: MSG to make copper glutamate, oxalic acid, citric acid, etc. I think it will be cool, pretty easy and the colors are vibrant

This is also used as a soap dye. Before I had a chemical budget I would make it with an old cell charger, scrap copper wire and baking soda via electrolysis. Now I use a DC supply and new wire. Lol

@Enjoymentboy
@Enjoymentboy Год назад
@@experimental_chemistry I'm in Canada. Copper sulfate hasn't been banned but it's no longer sold as root killer, which has been the traditional use. It wasn't made illegal but they made it not worth it for stores to carry it. Same thing with sulfuric acid sold as drain cleaner. If someone buys it and uses it as a weapon the store that sold it can be held responsible so many places have just stopped carrying it. I cleaned out one store when I heard they weren't going to stock it any longer. I had the guy go in the back and bring me every bottle they had. I left with 20L. lol

@@Enjoymentboy O.k., conc. sulfuric acid is even regulary banned here. It makes me a little sad to hear these news - I always held Canada to be one of the most liberal states regarding to the private use of chemicals... 🙁 But more and more countries are taking the EU's bad example of thinking that all problems can be solved just by prohibition... 🙄

Thanks! This reaction favours the creation of basic copper carbonate because there are tons of water around to attack the copper carbonate, I also got some of the other carbonates in the solution and that is why it was blue.

@Amateur.Chemistry
@Amateur.Chemistry Год назад
30% HCl can be used for almost everything that requires higher concentrated HCl, and that means a lot. There are tons of reaction involving it, some of them are pretty simple, and others more complicated, but if you are looking for something simple to do with it you can start by making some metal chlorides.

Im confused so if someone could help me understand. The ratio of Copper sulfate and sodium carbonate are 1:1 ratio, so if you had 128g of copper sulfate wouldnt you need exactly 54g of sodium carbonate? Pls correct me if im wrong. Or is it the puritys of the chemicals your using?

Dissolve it in water, copper carbonate is insoluble so it's basically just washing the acid off giving you copper carbonate. Also, if the stuff you got settled to the bottom, that's the carbonate, light bluish-green, copper carbonate is a base so you don't need sodium bicarb. Just wash in water and drain and dry.
