In this video, I'm making some small bronze backlash nuts for my customer, using the Hardinge DSM59 and South Bend Heavy 10. I intended on using the South Bend turret, but the alignment was off and I could's use it.

Well done. I have a South Bend 10 also- and bought a used turret for it that I'm trying to set up. Quickly found out about the cross slide getting in the way of the turret too. Thanks for showing this, it will help.

Good to see manual machines still have a place in a CNC world. Now your next mission, should you choose to accept it, is to grind up some tools to do more than one job, something like a parting/facing tool than also cuts a chamfer. Every tool change saved reduces job time thus allowing extra coffee breaks, which can't be bad. 👍

Nice job Brad. Great looking parts. You had me thinking what I woulda done if in the same boat with just one lathe.....Had the Hardinge not been available I would chucked up some steel in a tailstock drill chuck (or collet) put a drill in the headstock collet and drilled & reamed the proper size hole to accept the drill size you needed for the job...then loctite it in place so it could be used to finish the rest of the parts as it woulda been true to the axis of the lathe at that point. But then again...a second lathe is a much better option 😊 ~ Richard

You may well know this Brad, look into getting some roller box tooling for your turret. You can set them up to repeat diameters very close tolerance and much faster. If you let your stock hang out a little farther and set your rollers right you can make up for a good bit of miss alignment on your turret.(in a pinch) glad to hear you already know how to fix your misalignment. Keep the videos coming!

of topic, could you tell me what 3 phase, HP motor for a south bend heavy 10 lathe please

If the tolerance is .002 that would be + or - .001 so that part was out. I know it's a half thou but that's important to know.

You know, this is a great comment. I kinda thought myself, that I was talking too - babbling on and on. This video was shot while working so I did talk a lot. But its great feedback to know how I'm coming across to people. Its something that I want to eliminate - and will. Appreciate it man!

Glad you took it in the intended spirit. I am a south bend enthusiast and I love your subjects. It is just REALLY hard to carve out a half hour here and there. Best to you.

Glad you talked about the misalignments of your turret. I was looking into getting one for my lathe.

Craig - get one. But you may have to bore & sleeve it, as I'll do on mine.

BasementShopGuy : I know you're busy getting orders out. Just shows you how skills is still prized over technology. But if you can, how about showing how you align and adjust your turret. I know Chris from "Old Iron Shop" is in the same situation.

Brad if you bore and sleeve yours could you do a video? My 13" southbend has its matching power feed turret but I'm having the same alignment issues.

What is the flashing red light I can see in the background behind the tail of the lathe? Seems to be flashing a code?
