I head out to high ground to operate a Racal Cougar VHF radio. This radio was designed for military purposes such as special forces, the Racal Cougar was used during the Northern Ireland conflict.
PRM-4515 is a rugged portable military radio with (optional) 16 kbit/sec digital voice encryption, developed in the late 1980s by Racal Tacticom Ltd. 1 in Reading (UK) for use by Special Forces (SF) and for use in covert police operations.
The radio comes in a number of variants
PRM4515L which is a 10 channel 68-88Mhz radio with clear speech with 150hz CTCSS transmit and receive and also two selectable crypto keys A and B and a zeroise facility to dump the crypto keys
PRM4515N which is a 10 channel 68-88Mhz radio with clear speech with 150hz CTCSS transmit and receive and clear speech with carrier squelch and also two selectable crypto keys A and B and a zeroise facility to dump the crypto keys
PRM4515H which is a 10 channel 136-174Mhz radio with clear speech with 150hz CTCSS transmit and receive and also two selectable crypto keys A and B and a zeroise facility to dump the crypto keys.
PRM4515U which is a 10 channel radio in a 10Mhz band selected between 400-470Mhz with clear speech with 150hz CTCSS transmit and receive and also two selectable crypto keys A and B and a zeroise facility to dump the crypto Keys.

Love these early spring days. Lovely country where you are. I like my Stanley coffee filter cup I carry in my FourWheel Camper. I was just out scouting my turkey hunting permit area and camp spot in Wyoming near Bighorn mountains. I’m not quite set yet for field ops so won’t do any QRP this trip. Next trip.

Well done Carl! You have a lot of patience! I would have throw that antenna away after a few minutes of trying to use it! Lovely scenery as usual over there in the U.K.! Cheers!

Another great day and some beautiful scenery to boot! Your Racal Couger is a very rugged radio, it seems that it has served you very well, and will continue to do so in the future. Also the antenna that you were using seems that it is extremely portable even though as you said a little touchy to set up, all in all, Carl a very nice portable setup, thanks again for sharing your adventures.

Hi Carl I think that I've spoken to you a good while back on the 40 meters I don't know if you remember but we did have a QSO on 40 meters but ages ago so I just thought that I'd say hello and see how your going and everything mate OK and I like your special forces radio it's very impressive and saying about the special forces I've got Rusty Firmins autograph on my living room wall and he did the Iranian Embassy Siege back in May the 5th 1980 and he was a Lance Corpral at the time so it's pretty cool having his autograph and in years to come it will be worth a fortune to collectors of British military history so anyway I just thought that I'd tell you that I'm interested in the special forces in the UK mate. Anyway take care and best 73's for now cheers. Stephen M3SNV 73's.

Excellent video Carl, comme d'habitude. Those old military radios are too heavy, although I suppose the weight equals their sturdiness. I have humped the AN/PRC 77 radio, the Cdn Forces VHF portable radio, long enough to appreciate the lightweight commercial radios. Oh, and also to get a burn when transmitting while holding the base of the portable VHF antenna : > It's nice to see the new growth on the plants there; we won't see that here until late May or early June. We had freezing rain all night, but that's Newfoundland in March, hihi. Finally, great to see the credits list your various roles. Although I am not exactly sure what the "best boy" does? best 73,
