Long since the last video! That is because I renovated my lab a while ago and I will hopefully release videos more frequently
Today we will be making Copper(I) oxide from Copper(II) sulphate, sodium carbonate, citric acid and table sugar.

Similar to another suggestion for storage I was thinking that storing it under diethyl ether would be convenient. It’s non reactive and less hygroscopic than an alcohol, and when you’re ready to use your oxide it would evaporate off extremely quickly and cleanly. But ether might be difficult to come by or expensive for you so it has some drawbacks.

haven’t seen you unloading for a while, nice work. Man I gotta say that you are at one of the sweetest place for Chem, where chemicals and equipment are easy access and cheap. I think I have a similar hot plate for off Camera use, cost me less than 20 bucks including shipping.

I haven't uploaded for over 5 months because I was really busy BTW although chemicals are easy to access, the synthesis of chemicals is highly restricted in my place. Actually it is illegal for me to synthesise any "dangerous"(flammable, corrosive, etc) compounds like what i did in the previous videos So where i am is not really a good place for amateur chemists

Chem Explorer keep up the great work then. We all learn from each other and it seems they don't like that.

Hi, i liked the video so much ,it can be useful that if u could add the stoichiometry for each reaction. I guess that the first rxn was CuSO4+Na2CO3--> CuCO3 + Na2SO4 and then when you added the citric acid produces Cu3(Cit)2 + CO2 + H2O and for the last rxn, it is Cu3(Cit)2 + sugar --> Cu2O + Organic solution, i know that is not balanced but if you can confirm this, i´m going to be very grateful. Greetings from Mexico.

Can't you wash and dry in one step using Isopropyl alcohol, then store it under Isopropyl alcohol? I've found that ethanol is not as good for this.

That's a really good idea. I will use this method to store my copper(I) oxide next time i make it.

Hang on, where did the oxygen come from to make your copper 1 oxide? And why did you not show your oxidised copper 1 oxide when it turned black? This would have made it copper 2 oxide. I've just watched a video where some guy had to apply heat with a blow torch to turn copper 1 to copper 2 oxide and you just left yours to dry out? Doesn't make sense.
@ChemExplorer
@ChemExplorer 6 лет назад
first question RCHO + 2Cu2+ + 4OH- → RCOOH + Cu2O + 2H2O second copper(I) oxide, when wet, is oxidised to copper(II) oxide very easily. of course my Cu2O was just partially oxidised ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qk4iNBXh7I0.htmlm38s I have shown the Copper(I) oxide in the video above, turned significantly darker than before why heat is needed in your case is that the Copper(I) oxide is probably dry, which doesnt oxidise very easily in air

You're not answering the question. you're just relaying formula. I'm asking you where did the oxygen come from to make your copper 1 oxide?

hang on this is confusing - where's the sulphate from your copper II sulphate in your equation? I cannot find it! One final question before I come a pain, how would you extract the oxygen from the copper I oxide?
@ChemExplorer
@ChemExplorer 6 лет назад
seems you dont understand what ionic equations are since the sulphate ions dont take part (are unchanged) in the reaction, they are called spectator ions and are excluded from the equation. I don't really understand your 2nd question... extract the oxygen? If you are meaning that you still understand where the oxygen comes from to make the Copper(I) oxide, here it is: Hydroxide ions are OH-, they bond with the Copper(I) to form CuOH, and 2CuOH -> Cu2O + H2O The CuOH doesn't really form in reality, but the equation should help you understand how the hydroxide ions give its oxygen to copper to form Copper(I) oxide.
