Making cotton & linen underwear: worth the cost or time? (I finally figured out how to sew knits!)

I apologize in advance for the meandering nature of this video. I've never really had success with knits, and I decided this was the project where I would hunker down and try every trick I'd ever heard of until I found success. I also wanted to test whether or not making my own knit basics, like underwear, could possibly be worth the cost or time.

I got into making my underwear because "surely I can do it myself" as I didn't want to pay for unethical labour. And it escalated into vintage underwear styles, which are fantastic! And two swimsuits tailored for my weird shape, style sense and personal needs (medication sites that can't be exposed to sunlight), which were hell to make but so much better than anything I could have bought! It was a learning curve and not cheap, but something that can be accomplished with a couple of weekends and lots of tea.

For the machine struggling with the bands…use a strip of parchment paper underneath so the needle cant shove the fabric down into the hole. The paper peels off easily.

I think some of the problem comes because as experienced sewists we know how skilled we are at very complicated wovens including closures and boning and fitting, so we assume simple underwear has no right to give us big challenges. But it's like learning to sew from scratch again. All the frustrations we ever had learning how to sew way back at the beginning are forgotten, and all we feel is how foolish this new material is making us look. But please be very kind to yourself. Knits are like a different language from wovens. You can become fluent in time, but learning to sew both is definitely like a sort of bilingual sewing. And jumping straight into underwear, with its negative ease and curved seams and miniscule margin for error is extremely challenging. I think you did great! You will become more comfortable with the challenges over time, until someday you'll feel confident to whip up any knit garment you feel like in an afternoon! It's just a learning curve to get through from ground zero again.

@Marialla What a lovely and encouraging comment! And full of great insights: "knits are a different language from wovens" is a brilliant way of expressing the differences between the two. My mom always anthropomorphized her sewing machine when it misbehaved and she insisted that her machine--a 1966 White--"didn't like knits" and "refused to sew them." When I learned to sew on it, I found out what she meant. But, in line with your remark about knits and language, I think the truth was rather that knits didn't like that particular machine! They certainly behave as if they are alive when you try to stitch them on it; they writhe and wriggle and slip and slide, so it's like trying to hold onto a reluctant cat, with its magically flexible spine. The pins even scratch like claws! Thanks so much for this--I'm calling my mom to tell her what you said!

To avoid the stretching and rippling, I learned from Evelyn Wood (her channel is lovely omg) to do stay stitching. Basically, anywhere there's a curve or something that might stretch in a way you don't want it to, you run a line of stitching along the seam allowance, on just the single layer piece. It isn't a seam, and you can remove the stitching after making the actual seam, if you want to, but it keeps the fabric from deforming due to pulling slong curve and such. Might help you!

Retired tailor/dressmaker here. I have a Janome coverstitch machine, a White serger with the differential and a very old Babylock serger without the diferential. I love to sew knits. What's a differential? It's that lever thingy (or dial) that changes how much the serger or coverstitch machine stretches your fabrics you sew. How does it do that? It adjusts how much fabric is fed into each stitch. There is another adjustment you can make on your machines to make sewing knits easier and that is the presser foot pressure. This dial should be somewhere above the presser foot. Less pressure for knits with more stretch. Most important: when working on a new fabric and/or a new technique, make test samples with your scrap fabric. I always, always do this. It saves time in the long run. Far less seams get ripped out. Good luck with your next project.

For anyone wanting to sew knits without investing in a coverstitch machine, there are 3 key things: do not pull the fabric lengthwise at all, sew slowly, and tension should be a bit looser than it should be for wovens (you should just see the top thread underneath).

Thank you for sharing your journey. I bought a second hand coverstitch machine a few years ago and it makes finishing knits a dream. I have been making my family underwear for decades now. I took a sewing with knits course in the very early 1980's and have never looked back. My husband gets LOTS of free t-shirts from conventions. Once he has stained or ripped them I make them into underwear for him. He likes a style that isn't made anymore so I took a pattern from an old pair. I can get about 6 pairs from two t-shirts. You have succeeded and will get years of wear from that dozen or so that you have made in this video. Congratulations.

@gerriebell2128
@gerriebell2128 11 месяцев назад
That is also how you put ribbing trim onto a Tee Shirt, for example, cut the ribbing maybe 10% shorter than what you are sewing it to. Then you sew the ends of the round “opening” of the neck (or sleeve, etc) together so it is a Circle and mark each 1/4 of the way around with a straight pin. Do the same thing to the ribbing trim (sew ends together to make a circle and then mark each 1/4 of the circumference with a pin). Then as you sew ribbing onto the opening, put the ribbing pin with the opening pin and start sewing, and stretch ONLY the ribbing to bring its next pin to the next pin in the hole, and hold that as you sew to the next pin. do this as you sew around the whole thing, ending, of course, where you started. This will make the ribbing trim and neckline lay flat and fit nicely. As for knits in general: you should get a small scrap piece of the fabric and test sew on it, to see if it will stretch or do odd things. Always use a needle made for knits (ballpoint), or a “Jersey” needle. It does make a difference. Your test piece will show you if you need the lever at 1.8, etc. By the way that lever regulates “differential feed”. A serger has two sets of teeth that move the fabric along (feed dogs). On “normal”, the two sets move at the same speed. Above normal it moves one set of feed dogs at a different speed, to gather (you can actually gather fabric and make ruffles this way). Below normal it moves the two sets of feed dogs at different speeds to stretch out the fabric. You can use this stretching on the edges of knits with a rolled hem stitch, to make frilly looking “lettuce edges” on sleeves and top bottoms, etc. Sorry this comment was Long, but I thought this info would help you and others.

You should be able to make some self banded like these and then snip a hole/pair of holes in the band to thread anything you want through. Since it is knit, having unfinished holes is no problem. Personally I am contemplating threading elastic that way, leaving the hole open (possibly on the inside of the band where it wouldn't show) would make it incredibly easy to shorten the elastic as it inevitably stretches, and when all the stretch is gone just pull it out and add new.

I like linen knit, but the thing I'm finding with wearing T-shirts made of it is that I end up doing a lot of darning because it's more delicate than a lot of the cotton knits due to the type of thread used to make the fabric. It wears through much faster than woven linen fabric and tears easily if it catches on something. Hang-drying helps mitigate that a bit. I'd like to get my hands on some hemp knit fabric and see how it compares for durability.

for the serging at the seams bulky problem, when sewing your strip ends together, turn them perpendicular, and sew "corner to corner". Check out sewing strips of quilt binding together. First of all, kudos to all who attempt this! Underwear sewing is just a struggle. I don't really try to sew underpants, but I do sew a lot of knits and can make some recommedations for anyone sewing knits with a twin needle or on a sewing machine and this seems a good spot to share it and help anyone else who wants to work with knits (they really are a different animal from wovens). Firstly, test all of your stitches on extra scraps of your fabric: play with tensions and stitch lengths, take notes. I have learned that for a twin needle stitch to look good on a knit, you need a surprisingly long stitch, I often use a 4 when using my twin. It still allows a fair amount of stretch, but you don't get so much rippling (an iron can help with that - yes, you should press your knits - but it gas limits). Pairing it with paper under the fabric can help with the double stitch, but it can be a bear to remove. If you want to stitch a band kind of like a bias strip (as was being done at the beginning), instead of serging the edge, you can just attach the band first with a narrow zigzag stitch and then use the double needle to stitch down the knit bias foldover into place around the leg (if that makes sense). Also, if you don't have a twin needle, there are plenty of decorative stitches that stretch.

My frustration with the twin needle was what made me buy a coverstitch machine, too. While I had my 1970s electromechanical and very simple Husqvarna, twin needles did work because every tension had to be adjusted manually anyways. With the new computerized machine I would have had to use a separate bobbin case with reduced tension only for the twin needle. I never managed to get a nice result with that one and rather used one of the "fake coverstitch" options on my sewing machine. I never regretted buying the Baby Lock Euphoria two years ago and have used it for decorative stitching, too, as well as for basting: With one needle it sews a two-thread chainstitch which you either pull out if it is not right or you secure the ends and leave it in as the final seam. Genius!

I found some cotton underwear that did not stretch and duplicated the pattern onto cotton gauze fabric because it was cheaper than linen and soft. They feel wonderful basically since they don’t stretch they look much bigger but have a good fit. For the elastic I used if I remember a band of material . I have to double check they had little to no elastic. I put a t shirt cotton to line the inside layer and they’re just the best.

A couple things you could try with the linen: get a linen knit with a small amount of spandex. Second, try using the clear elastic instead of traditional elastic. It will add stability with less bulk.

I had a t-shirt made from similar linen knit, it was ok at first. but after several washes it started to lose it's shape. Be prepared for the expensive-ish material to become a rag after only one summer 🥲 Wouldn't recommend sewing a dress, there will be a stretched out "bubble" on your backside after a bit of sitting. Maybe just use a thin non-knit linen for a summer dress, it will be very cute and comfy🥰

We own merino jersey underwear. This superfine wool knit has amazing properties! Quick dry, antibacterial, lightweight, soft, and sustainable. It is a delicate that is hand wash only, but it goes longer between washes. The brands we use are Engel (German), Wooly (USA, made in China), and Boob Design (Australia). Just make the leg and waist bindings with a coordinating spandex cotton for your linen knickers and voila! No more elastic and no more stretched out waist and leg bands! Also if you make your gussets using zorb and pul fabric (I found some that is pre-combined zorb and pul at wazoodle) you have an instant solution to the dreaded monthly cycle. For those who enjoy hand stitching, try a simple back stitch or herringbone stitch (aka catch stitch and other names).

Loved this! I started doing my own underwear during pandemic and I'm never looking back. I do use a zigzag on my regular machine, but I also use picot elastic instead of leg bands/waistband, which speeds things up a lot, and I don't mind the look of matching color zigzag when the elastic is decorative. (I've been cutting cost on elastic by buying big multicolor lots on Etsy instead of individual colors). I can do a pair in about 45 minutes, but the real selling point for me is sizing. I was having so many issues buying underwear--I'd follow the sizing guides but kept getting underwear that were too small or too big, and of course when I finally found some that fit they'd fall apart in six months. My first learning pairs from April of 2020 are only just now starting to look the worse for wear--and I expect the ones I made after I got the hang of things to last much longer than that. Also, Goose is beautiful.

I have grown flax for over 10 years. I process and spin into linen. I cannot figure how linen would actually work as a knit. It has zero memory. It is better at drape or highly tailored. Now, wool jersey would be interesting. Wool has natural elasticity. I owned a few pair in the past and the wicking properties was great. However, how fine the jersey fabric was meant it got holes pretty quickly. Glad you got the cover stitch. I have the baby lock CS and it does have a learning curve. Glenda Sparling of Sure Fit designs on youtube has a video series on using a CS machine for garment finishing. For me, the CS is a finishing machine but sure does it well. Now I want a CS with auto tensioning like my Imagine.

Your findings from this journey are fascinating! I congratulate you on getting a new machine, it'll definitely make your life easier. I need some new underwear too, though I need to make do with my regular home-sewing machine :') However, I did sew knits on this machine already and it's totally manageable, so I'll leave a couple of tips here - maybe they'll be useful to someone: 1. Testing your stitches, tension, stretch, EVERYTHING is key with knits. 2. Cut your bands shorter than the opening, then stretch them gently to fit while sewing (~10% shorter, this is especially important for round openings like the neck). I wonder if this would solve your problem with the linen stretching out so that you wouldn't need to insert elastic at all? I don't have experience with non-elasticated knits unfortunately because they are difficult to come by where I live, so I can't tell... Though I have some 100% cotton underwear and in this case they are finished with elastic. If I come by a 100% cotton knit, I'll test this. 3. After the wash even the stretched out fabric should go back to its previous shape, shouldn't it. So I wouldn't worry much about a bit of wobbling after sewing.
@nwinning
@nwinning Год назад
When sewing knits, you will have lest stretching out if you lengthen your stitch to 3 or 3.5 and stretch your fabric as you go. (I know it sounds counterintuitive) I usually use a slight zigzag- also for your leg bands, try a 3 thread serge using the right needle. Hope that helps. Practice knits on something like tanks or pjs

I wanted to mention that one of the tricks I found for working with a twin needle to do topstitching was to make sure first that the tension was set properly, which I’m sure you nailed here since it looks pretty good, but second was to use a somewhat stretchy thread in your bobbin so as to allow the machine to stitch through the layers of fabric more easily and also to have the seams shrink back into place after having been stretched through the sewing machine. I’ve only really tried using wooly nylon thread for this, since it’s what I had on hand, but I’m sure any other thread with a slight stretch would also work great. :)

@glendas.mckinney926 Год назад
For neck binding on cotton knits, I use strips cut to about 80% of the opening's length when machine sewing with zig-zag inside and twin needle topstitch. Why? If binding inside a circle is the length of the perimeter, it will stand up like a column of fabric. I've been making bra liners, half-slips, and full slips from 6oz linen jersey. To use linen as self-binding for lingerie, I cut the strips to the *stretched* length that feels right wrapped around where the opening sits, in the same way that you might cut elastic shorter to be snugger--and then distribute the negative-fullness evenly. I do the stitching by hand, using a V shaped stitch to attach one edge of the binding to the inner edge, then folding over to the front and using a nicer-looking-but-still-stretchy herringbone hand stitch, leaving a raw edge on the outside. A more fiddly person could cut the binding a bit wider and tuck the raw edge under before doing the herringbone, but I didn't want the additional bulk and I know the raw edge will not be a problem long term from experience. Fine jerseys made from 100% natural fibers are always off-grain, and I haven't found a way to correct that with laundering and hanging the yardage tugged to a square shape. It just wants to be wonky, and so I just use it wonky. But I do cut the binding strips along the knit line instead of square to the selvage. Linen next to the skin helps with perspiration, wicking it away and feeling less sticky. The bonus is that these very light pieces are easy to hand-launder and prevent having to launder bras and tops with shelf bras as frequently. I think of then functioning as the chemise under medieval and Renaissance clothing: protective, comfortable, washable.

Just wanna start with: I love your chickens, I am living vicariously through you and your chick indevours. I also hated knit fabric, while messing around I realised that if I ironed at every step it really REALLY helped with the warping. Yeah, dampening and pressing the fabric is tedious, but it basically restored what I thought were totally failed projects. I also cut the waist a bit further down so I could make the waist band thicker (which helped for the less stretchy fabrics). Mixing my fabric choices also helped (so linen base but cotton banding). I plan on trying my hand at some basic tops and maybe one day a bra, but I really want a coverstitch machine. The sewing machine I have atm does a great job at quite a few stretch stitches, so I had planned to forgo an overlocker altogether. However, if I can find a decent two in one I might go for it. The money I'd save there would 100% be worth the hassle for me and the space it would be saving as my sewing room isn't big.

I have done some leg openings in cotton spandex without serging, fold in 1/4 inch and stitch with twin needle. I felt like the serger threads added too much bulk. You can use spray starch to keep it from curling so much. I heard another tip that you should stitch as soon as you can after cutting, because the longer it sits, the more the edges curl.

Never have I ever seen linen jersey underwear. When I made my own underwear I just hemmed the leg openings, but this is only possible with a high spandex content - at least 5 percent. If you want a band, it needs to be smaller than the leg opening. This also goes for the waistband. It is what you you would do with an elastic that is on show. But linen? Never, just too wobbly and unstable. You are a heroine for trying though! And I bought a coverlock, because I knew I wanted to make underwear, but don‘t that the space for three machines.

I haven't tried linen knit (I have a couple of linen knit shirts and both of them developed small holes I had to mend like... immediately, which makes me less inclined to work with it) but I have tried merino knit, cotton spandex, and lightweight rayon spandex knit leftover from an old project. Merino is by far my favorite, it's super comfy and easy to work with. Rayon is squidgy but the underwear is super lightweight and breathable, and cotton is sturdy. I do use elastic, but I've had fairly good luck finding quality lingerie elastic on etsy. I definitely struggle with the wavy elastic/knit hems but it doesn't bother me too much because it's invisible when worn and they're comfy. One day I'd love to get a serger and a coverstitch...

I have sewn my own underwear for years, just because I could not trust the store bought one to be of the same fit and quality from time to time even when buying the same brand and size what looked as the same model. My best tips for sewing with knits is to remember that it will not fray like wovens. You dont have to finish the raw edges. Underwear will be a lot softer and thinner without serged side seams for example. Just use a narrow zig-zag instead of straight stitch for constructing. Zig-zag, or thre step zig zag is also most often the best choice (function wise) for attaching elastics and top stitching, even if its not like factory made clothes look right now. ... and I do own both serger, coverstitch machine and a modern sewing machine with "elastic straight stitch" so it is not for lack of choices I say this.

The serging on a single layer not stretching is due to the fact that the two needle threads essentially act like a pair of straight stitches, and it's only really the looper threads that soak up the stretch. That means that for the needle thread to be able to stretch, it needs some excess length going down through the thickness of the fabric and wrapping around the looper thread, so that when the seam is pulled tight, that excess length can be pulled up to the top side (and then the looper thread pulls it back down when the stretch relaxes). I'm glad you found a good deal on a coverstitch machine. When you were struggling with the twin needle, I kept thinking to myself "this is exactly what a coverstitch machine is designed to help with".

There's something called...ummm... Miracle Tape? I forget exactly. It is s double stick tape for sewing which *dissolves* in water. You use it to stabilize the pieces. Once sewed, you wash them and it goes away. This is the *best* thing I've found for knits. The tape is a little thick and a wee bit sticky on your sewing needle, but it totally works. Results become contingent on your dexterity to get the 1/4" straight tape to paste your curves together without buckling in an unsightly manner. Highly recommend you try it out for fun...even though you spent the bank to get the right tool for the job. (Which over the years might have been best for you, personally, to do.) That tqpe is in the Joann sewing notion area. Yellow package.

I don’t make a lot of knit pieces from scratch but I alter a lot of shirts and feel pretty comfortable with knits. I only have a sewing machine, not a serger or coverstitch so here is some stuff that helped me: - I’ve found a walking foot + the lowest tension possible is key for avoiding warp. Also gently steaming it helps it shrink down a little bit - make sure you never put tension on the fabric before the pieces are sewn, the cut edge stretches out super easily. - I always put in a fresh jersey needle to avoid snags or skipped stitch, they also make twin needles specifically for knits - put some parchment paper under really soft fabrics to avoid the machine eating it. - A lot of modern machines also have a „stretch“ stitch, it’s not as stretchy as a zig zag and basically impossible to unpick but it looks really clean - I also think elastic in the leg holes is kinda mandatory, every pair of underwear I’ve had without will stretch out in that area over time. I don’t know which brands are available in your area but I get my lingerie elastic from an online store that sells lingerie sewing supplies and it’s very nice. I guess now that you own a coverstitch machine you don’t necessarily need this but maybe someone else can benefit lol
