Probably because your technique was lacking. After making those splits at the top, are you properly lining up your cuts with the previous ones when you move onto the next node(s)? If you do it properly, they'll travel straight down the entire length of the bamboo without completely detaching. It takes a decent amount of practice to get good at this.

@@spwnker8550 yeah it was my first time trying it, as you say the key is to line up the splits on each node and also sometimes you have to strike with the axe in between the nodes as well to get the split to travel the full length
