Another cool thing to do is place a different portrait on the reverse side of the card. Let's say the players encounter an NPC who is secretly a demon, werewolf, or vampire. Once this fact is revealed, you could flip the token to reveal the NPC's more monstrous form.

Yeah, you might be able to increase the price of these cards from $0.006 to $0.007. Remember, hes using cards nobody wants. Recycling them in this way is actually an improvement to sitting in someone's closet gathering dust until they finally give up trying to sell them and just dumpster the 6000 card bundle. It's not like he is using anything worth money or cards that people actually want.

If you buy typical inexpensive (but not really cheap) poker chips, they have a steel billet in the center that is used to add weight and make them feel more expensive. This billet can work pretty well with magnets (for many effects). They typically run around $0.07/ea. in bulk, from what I'm seeing. And the colors can be useful for differentiating sides in a battle.
@williamjohnson4497
@williamjohnson4497 5 лет назад
Love this idea, I have some poker chips, tested them with a magnet and viola. something is in there. But I tested another set of poker chips I had and there was no metal in it... So, when I am shopping online how can I tell the difference? I want my children to be able to use these as fridge magnet type toys some having a bit of metal is a good start. All that said, the poker chips with the steel billet that I have are also about 1/8" wider than 1.5", but that's probably an improvement over a disc too small (especially if kids are touching them... they'll try and peel stuff off)

I've done something like this, but my way is a little cheaper: 1. Use one-inch circles and print out what you want. 2. After applying the glue, apply mod podge, especially around the edges. It dries clear, and will seal the paper on. Pretty simple and easy. This method also lets you edit the pictures before printing in case you want red, yellow, etc. tokens for ease at the table, like "I attack the green goblin," or "my spell deals ten damage to the blue skeleton."

I used to make D&D grid sets that would go on a magnetic dry-erase board. I'd take 1/2" grid poster paper and draw my battlefield on it, then stick it to the board. I then took 1/2" round magnetic discs with a sticky side (thanks Hobby Lobby) and stuck them to colored paper (blue for PC's, green for NPC's, red for enemies) and cut them out and put the unit's initials on them. Voila, wall-mounted miniatures! I could even cut out magnetic sheets for larger enemies or moveable barriers / secret rooms, etc.. We had all the room in the world for our laptops, char sheets, snacks, all the good stuff. Watching this makes me want to try using MTG cards for character faces or something instead of construction paper... I could probably even make large or gargantuan monsters out of it, or even larger (oversized legendary dragons like Intet??). Oh how I miss my D&D days sometimes.

It is VERY easy to integrate custom art into your campaign with a system like this. An example: A player's half-elf paladin had a portrait commissioned, and the player wants that art to be represented in their token on the table. In this case, it would be simple enough to print out the art (preferably on glossy photo paper), punch a circle, glue to a disc, and you're done. No need to pore over 3D models, trying to find the closest match, then go through all the effort of painting... A possible improvement on this system is to skip the wooden discs and instead use plastic coin capsules (you can search for them on amazon). That cuts out the gluing step, and also conserves storage space, since the tokens can be stored flat against each other and only put in the plastic capsule when needed for a combat session.
@electricmeatpuppet

You could also paint the edge of the discs black like you would a miniature base to make them look that little bit slicker and make the art pop a little more.

I find that instead of having to paint them, a flexible version is buying paperclips (Those already colored ones that you can get in bulk) and prop the tokens up with the clip so you have a round, cheap miniature and the paperclip acts as a stand and you can switch them at any time

I wandered into the comments specifically to see if anyone had suggested this. I think color-coding the rims of each disk would be a good idea, if for no other reason than it would speed up the process of finding what you're looking for when they're stored on their side. I'd probably color-code it based on the general appearance of the character/creature featured in the art - human, undead, dragons, etc. Whatever works best for the DM. By color-coding it based on general descriptors, then it doesn't matter if they are used as an NPC for one game and a PC for another. (After all, the idea is that the players would use the art on top to differentiate between friend and foe.) Awesome idea, Questing Beast! It's been a while since my household did our last MTG card purge, so we probably have a decent amount of commons that can be sacrificed to the dnd gods.

you can use the symbol from the land to assign elemental attributes to the tokens too by putting it on the back side. or use the back as like a power up form or transformation.

I've been doing this for a while, already. My first batch were 1" circles that were made with layers of Gorilla Glue and scrap card-stock from the MtG cards. I graduated to fender washers backed with felt-paper, after that. It wasn't until recently that I found out about these wooden circles being available.

This is an awesome idea. I've been using the miniatures from my mtg arena of the planeswalkers sets for my games.

I'd suggest punching out the basic land Mana symbols as well. They can be used to mark effects and terrain features. Swamp Skull can be a generic marker for a trap or aura, stuff like that

This is a great idea for making use of all the bulk in my collecting that isn't worth selling/trading. A great way to get a collection of custom tokens for use in MTG games, too.

I have been collecting old cards and have well over 6000+ and seeing this was great thanks for the idea and I will be of course telling them who I got the idea from. Would never have thought they even made hole punches that big actually lol

I would also recommend using instants and sorceries to write down what a spell does, so you don't have to flip through your spellbook

I would also recommend ad cards. Great art sometimes and no waisted cards. And the art is in different sizes. The text gets in the way a lot, but you can find good stuff.

So elixir of immortality is a bit more expensive but I probably have around 50 of them. I'm going to use those to represent health potions and on the back write whatever the particular roll is for that level of potion. 4d4+4 for example

I will use my old pokerset for this. And I can use the colours of the tokens to sort the creatures by CR or perhaps Terrain :)

For the Hex Crawl you can just put some poster putty and stick them to a board of some kind. Card stock or heavy paper that you could slide into a slip cover could work really well. As for the tokens themselves I would definitely recommend the 1.5" circles. A one inch token will have so little of the art it could be more confusing than anything.
