i literally just had to do this with my film about my dad im working on. was starting to get lost/felt like something is missing. Helped me realized i really need to go to california to record two additional interviews with two of my dads best friends to tell a little more well rounded story about his life. Thanks for this one mark! I love this use case of milanote too. Really practical
As someone who lost my father 4 years ago, I regret not capturing more of my Father and his circle whilst I had the chance. What is your Dad's documentary for?
This is exactly what I needed today man. I'm embarrassed to say that I abandoned a doc project a few years ago because I got lost in the weeds. I'm currently working on a series of short docs to help build my skills. I'm editing the first one today.
The software I'm using in this is called Milanote, check it out for free here: milanote.com/markbone1121 ... Also, have you signed up for the Filmmaker Summit?? Less than a week away now! theartofdocumentary.com
I think your content is pushing me more towards finding ways to tell more meaningful stories within my own content. Don’t get me wrong, I love the opportunities that have come my way so far on this journey, but more than cars and motorcycles, I’ve always loved film. Weirdly, the last few years, I’ve been thinking a lot more about doc style filmmaking. Your channel is just fueling that creative fire. Thank you, Mark! Appreciate you and all your knowledge!
Just what I needed to get started on the doc I'm working on. I'd organised my footage, but not the story itself. Time to sticky some digital notes and get this train going :)
some already said this in the comments and i have to say this as well: that‘s exactly what i needed. i shot and interview today and before the shoot i thought that i need to improve my preproduction and here you are posting about it 👨💻 thanks Mark
Great video man. I’m going to try out millinote. Would love to see a video about how you organize the footage in Adobe premiere to build each scene and the entire film.
First and foremost, this channel is so wicked. It's genuinely surprising that you don't have over a million subscribers yet, Mark. I don't make documentaries personally, but this channel is an invaluable resource for storytelling and filmmaking with depth and meaning behind it, so I'm finding myself watching to learn more and more about your processes and applying them to my specific style of content creation. I currently use Notion to script and outline videos, but Milanote looks wicked. Would you say it's worth it for storyboarding a 10 minute RU-vid video with lots of b-roll and visuals, or is that's overkill? Thanks for all you're sharing my fellow Ontarian, really appreciate it.
Mark, this is the single most important thing for setting yourself up to succeed in creating a film. This video needs to be watched before starting any future creative project, its life changing! Thank you for creating such valuable content, its been an honor to see your career develop and grow!
Love your vids mark! Always so much to learn from yourself, whether its video and productivity principles or straight up life principles. Much respect to you, and keep it up bro. Also had a question with regards to monitors - would you say for a purely video editing point of view, your 34 inch LG 5k2k monitor would suffice ? Thanks man!
pre-production on docs is a nice thing to spend time on, but docs come together in the edit no matter how much you try to control where it's going before editing. You will always spend loads of time in the edit and a good editor/director/producer won't get lost in the BS.
Hey Mark, only thing I’m not clear on is your screen grabs and how they are already color graded before you put in Milanote. Do you do a rough grade before hand?
Great video! I checked out Milanote from one of your other videos a few months ago and it's definitely a great resource for getting organized before the shoot. Thanks for sharing your process!
I shoot mainly product commercials and want to get better at telling stories while using those products. That way the customer can see how the product can help them in various ways. Take for instance a headlamp. I want to tell a story around it while also telling someone’s story. The headlamp is kind of in the background, meaning we know it’s there but just like a pair of shoes, we forget they are there but they serve an important purpose.
With every video you release, explained in great detail and delivered with a driving passion I am continually reminded of your kindness. Thank you Mark. Your good karma will come back to you and you will reap what you sow. Thank you so much for being so generous. Love from Fiji!
Hello pro you're the best I swear I want cheapest camera to do my RU-vid channel if you can help me I will great full of you all the time and God bless you for your all efforts
Super eager to know what does "Eva takes principles from it and injects them into the video" means ? Because it seems something very important that provides meaning to the film and story.
Guilty as charged - been sitting on a HUGE pile of footage for a documentary project I and my team shot this past Spring and not only was just logging and prepping all of the footage daunting but trying to figure out what the spine of the film should be, what it _could_ be was really difficult. I tried going into the film open to letting our subject take us where he was going to take us but I think I had overhyped what I hoped his story _would_ be and when his life and what he was trying to accomplish didn't have high stakes and tension, I think I cooled to the project overall. I still think it might end up being more of a portrait than a story with dramatic tension and resolution...but then again maybe I'll end up surprised by what's _really_ there in the footage now that I can take a look at it with fresh eyes. Snagged Milanote with your link - what a terrific app! Already organizing the edit with screen grabs from the footage and feeling incredibly motivated to hunker down and figure this thing out. Awesome video!
hey there mark, any time to make a tutorial on how to color grade or expose your clips to make it as sharp as possible? like have zero noise or whatever haha
Just brilliant Mark, really grounding and helpful stuff. "it's OK to build your castles in the air, now you must put the foundations beneath them." Not sure who said that but it fits. Thanks so much.
