Our heritage farmer Robert has given us a demonstration on how to make flour.
This contraption is called a quern, the grain goes into a hole in the middle and is ground between the two stones. Through this process, grain is turned into flour.
It was a process that would take a long time and the development of some intense arm muscles! It was also the norm for many people in Ulster’s past, as Robert told us - it was a process that made you appreciate every bite of the bread you had grown from seed.
You can see the use of a quern in action as photographed by W. A. Green → bit.ly/3PigulW
