Absolutely fantastic video! The method you demonstrate goes to show how model railroading doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg to make beautiful scenery. thank you for taking the time to do this video! Cheers Mike

Ty, this will be my first attempt at making 0 scale trees for model railroading I purchased all materials needed, except the tree trunks. I have not decided on wood, real tree roots, and two products which are dried roots. This will take more thought. I have enjoyed watching your video. Thank you for creating this tool so others can learn. Very well done !

Thanks for sharing your technique that shows how you shape the trunks. I just started making some of these trees and hand carved the first five trunks, but after seeing this video, I did a couple of large trunks using the sanding disk and drill method. What a difference and it took no time at all to produce them.

Great clip, those trees look very convincing. I think the ability to make each tree different is what gives this method the edge. I particularly like the dead lower limbs!

This is the best and most in-depth pine tutorial I have ever been able to find. Thank you. Quick question for anyone willing to offer an opinion: if I am making a tree that is about twice the size of the one made in this video, would you recommend using 2mm static grass instead of fine ground cover for the flock?

Excellent instructional video. Although my lay out is small it is based on deep north woods logging so lots of trees of all sizes and shapes are in order. By my count around 250 so mass production is in order. I found that using a woman’s hair pick available on Amazon will aid in splitting the filter material into thinner yet still realistic looking rather than lots and lots of hand work.

Was going to try to do a video on this same thing. Things I learned by trial and error. Wish I would have found this before. You covered everything perfectly!! I agree, Natural filters are the only one that will look right. LOL, I even used the same brand of hairspray. Love the idea of the fillers and the dead branches. Definitely a plus. Never thought of that myself. For N scale, try barbeque skewers at the dollar store. For texture of the trunks you can also use a rasp or coarse file. One additional tip. Using desired color spray paint, you can highlight certain parts of the tree, or, vary the color slightly between trees. Best Evergreen tree making video ever! Thank You, Sarge

I always use a razor saw held at 45 to 90 degrees to the axis of the tree trunk and just start scrapping in the grooves. Also I find it easier to paint the trunks what ever color you think suitable and then apply a wash of india ink or dark green or black paint to fill the groove for the bark. Trees come in all sizes and you can save money by using anything you have, old paint brush handles, barbecue skewers etc. Never the less your trees look good and anything that works is right.

Great Video tutorial! I've been experimenting with various techniques for bottle brush conifers, which work great for small to small/medium trees, but your tree technique is great for medium to large conifers. Much better than Caspia Basil in balsa trunks as yours are probably a lot more durable. The only thing I'd suggest is to use a spray adhesive rather than hair spray as spray adhesives tend to hold a lot better for the long haul, especially if you build these for a portable layout. Thanks for sharing!

thanks..this is the 12th time I watched this..amazed every time..little long in the narration but hey its all good..prob is in Canada the furnace filters are VERY HARD to find and are BLUE not partly green where you added the camo green as well.. but all in all im from the Eastern side in a Province called New Brunswick where there are some areas of this type of trees and soo therefore I can't wait til Feb when Im'a gonna begin the month long tree making project for my first HO scale layout..mostly of steam engines but a few diesel engines too BUT these diesel engines will still be black soo it ll tye into these type of trees still pretty good.. like the ole steam loggers type does.. anyways thanks again I hope you keep this video on RU-vid long after Feb 2015

Great looking trees, but how much time and cost of material per tree? When I consider projects, I look at my time plus cost of material verses cost of buying it already made. If I was unemployed and on welfare I'd probably do a tree myself, but I'm not. Thanks for showing us how to make trees.
