Making Good Use of the Sleeper Train in Japan | Sunrise Express

I took the last regularly scheduled sleeper train in Japan to get back to Tokyo. First, I took Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Okayama and changed to Sunrise Express.
I booked a berth called Single, which is the most common on Sunrise Express. To get the tickets, you need to go to the ticket office. The last minute purchase is not recommended because the sleeper train is very popular.

My middle son loves trains. We took him on a train trip for his birthday last month- it was a dinner theatre sort of thing with a very elegant meal, and a murder mystery to solve. He loved it. I have shared your train videos with him, and now he wants to try this, too.

Honestly, the idea of sleeper trains with beds sounds amazing to me, you can stay somewhere later than you usually could if you needed to take other transportation methods, sleep on the train, and be somewhere new early the next day.

Years ago I took a sleeper train from Istanbul, Turkey to Sofia, Bulgaria. We had to stop and wake up at around 2 AM at the border, to disembark and queue single file, outside, at a utilitarian, concrete communist-era border post, so that three (3) men in uniform could each look at our passports through a small window (one sitting, two standing behind him, peering over his shoulder and looking up at each of us suspiciously like a scene out of Wes Anderson). The facilities were equipped with a squat toilet. Yes, on a train. Despite this, and two other instances of being awoken for on-train inspection of our passports and visas, I found the trip delightful. It was quite a bit shakier than the Sunrise Express (now think about the squat toilet again), but the rocking of the train actually helped me sleep. And the view over the landscape after the sun rose was gorgeous, and absolutely unforgettable. A very unique experience and actually one I quite cherish.

Nice! The getting locked out of room was kinda funny and worrisome :) BTW, How did they get the train started back if they had no power supply?
@sepruecom
@sepruecom 2 года назад
The train was just unlucky to stop under a section insulator. The electric supply is divided into isolated power circuits, and there are short sections without power inbetween those. Usually these section insulators are built in places where trains (or trams/subways/light rails for that matter) don't usually stop, but this was an emergency break so there was little choice. The driver probably had to go to the other end of the train and power it up from that side in order to move away from the insulated section, then go back to the front again to continue (since the train consists of two units and thus has two power collectors). Not to speak about the protocolls and communication with the control center to get something like that done...

I traveled to Kyoto from Tokyo, and I found the best way to get a hotel was at the train station, the tourist info office (this was before the smart phone era) Do you think 🤔 still a good option now that you can Google anything and make a reservation on your phone?

With your love of sunrises, you should come to New Zealand some time. The East Cape of the North Island of New Zealand is the first place to see the sun each day because of proximity to the International Date Line. Unfortunately, we only have 2 real ferry routes and our trains are pretty limited. We have a few excellent tourist train routes, but the local and intercity routes leave a lot to be improved on.

Every time I have gone to Japan, I have taken sleepers. Watching them slowly disappear as the decades have gone by has been a sad experience, but I suppose it really is better and more convenient to arrive by a super fast train rather than a much slower train you sleep on, but I can't help but think the sleepers were a more fulfilling experience.

Actually, I am taken aback by the way the Shinkansen looks: worn out and rather dirty! Not the "beer bottles rolling on the floor" kind of dirty, but still... Unclean! Not the image I have of the Shinkansen. And for the PIN: just use your birthday. Noone aboard should know it, so it's sufficiently safe. And you can remember it.
