Synthesis of graphene quantum dots from citric acid and urea. I fully intend to make this into a full series.
Materials: Citric acid, urea, UV source
Hazards: None
Method: "Controlled synthesis of blue luminescent graphene quantum dots from carbonized citric acid: Assessment of methodology, stability, and fluorescence in an aqueous environment" (Materials chemistry and Physics Journal Volume 220)

Awesome! Was it the same color? I've found it red-shifts the longer you leave it in the microwave, but at a certain point it collapses and you get no fluorescence

Other than drying and sieving the dots to get the correct size, the only other way I can think of that you could do at home would be with a centrifuge.

Centrifuge seems to be the go-to method in all the literature I read on this process.. wish they were more affordable 😅😅

@@integral_chemistry there's some work getting high G centrifugation using very cheap materials - like string and paper - that came out of Manu Prakash's lab at Stanford . They were using this for inexpensive blood analysis in 3rd world settings, you might be able to get it to work for you though.

During my master thesis I prepared by thermal degradation of citric acid and ammonium acetate. Purification by dialysis. Usually gqd emission is excitation dependent, color change with excitation

Oh really? Huh that is good to know before I start trying to make several batches that all end up looking the same.. you think then I would get a different emission with these same dots using my UV-C lamp?

Let me know how it goes! I did this vid in a response to a request to demo the easiest possible diy quantum dots and this is the best I could come up with. I did also try this with glucose instead of citric acid and sodium hydroxide instead of the urea and it also worked, but it was a bit more sensitive to the microwave.

i checked by DLS it is not giving the single peak and also avg size more than 400nm

Yeah I'd actually recommend simple UV/Vis. In lieu of some heavy centrifugation you're going to get such a wide range of particle sizes that DLS won't work all that well. Use the wavelength peaks in UV/Vis along with the formula at the end of the vid to calculate particle size

DLS gives you hydrodynamic size but not exact size. all impurities sticking on the qds, ions etc. is within the size. TEM would be better.

My PhD thesis was about silicon nanoparticles we made using electrochemical etching. I had to use a HPLC system to separate the particles by size. I would imagine this could work here too.
