I just purchased one used last week. Had to send off my IC-7300 for repair after a rainstorm took it out. Had to use the 705 for backup on ssb and data. Decided on getting a 706 for a backup/portable go kit radio. Once I get it here at the QTH, I plan on running it for a while and getting the TX Audio set up. Then, get an external sound card for data.

I bought a MkIIg new in 2005 and used it to make 30,000+ contacts while deployed to Iraq. After returning, the radio was traded for an amplifier and I regretted it for years. A friend had one for sale a few years ago and I bought it for $200 in fine working condition. It is part of my 'go-kit' now and will not be going anywhere again! As for the QRP and amp comment, I have an Icom 705 for the D-Star capability and still paid less to add an amp than the cost of an IC-7100.

I am not crazy about contests. I just like talking to people. I have an Icom 706 MK2G. I bought it doing its last year of production. I had my eyes on them for quite a while before I finally bought one. Great radio. I don't use it much but its awesome. Does a lot of things very well and I find it a great deal of fun to operate it as well! I have considered adding an Icom 705 but not sure if I will or not. They are definitely in short supply and a very popular radio here in the United States. Nice video!!!!

I use a 1/4 wave on a 9inch magmount that's also SCREWED down with 2 of the 4 screws bolted into the steel framework (rib cage) of my old 1982 Peugeot Biesl 6300 motor home. It's great for its designed purpose (cb, 11 metres) and would probably be good down to 20m. Brilliant RU-vid channel, I just came across it!! Love the cooking element. Insomnia has me going through your videos! Best regards from Anglesey North Wales

Carl, I always enjoy you going out in the field playing radio, and especially using this classic Icom 706, it is truly a fine radio. Also readying your land Rover for hf seems like a very interesting project, it seems that you are making great headway, I am very interested in the outcome, and thank you for sharing. Also the Icom 706 sounds terrific and your cooking the lamb with all of the spices sure made me hungry hi hi. Thank you, again for sharing and Happy Holidays!

Nice video! I just received an IC-706 from an elmer, so I'm excited to hop on HF soon. Next time brown your meat in the cast iron with oil or butter. The fond from the browning will add some delightful depth to your veggies and stew! Once browned, you can pull your meat out, do the rest of what you did, then re-add the meat when you're ready to stew for a bit of time. Cheers! 73

I have bot an Icom 700PRO, the dual Marine and Ham SSB transciever, and an Icom-707, I enjoy using both. And the other classic I have is a Kenwood TS-930S, which is a real joy to use.

Top tip! Wind your wire in figure of 8 using a SotaBeams wire winder. Easy peasy every time

Good radio the 706. Well mine was till it started playing me about, I had a 706 Mk2 G. Now it's being used as a door stop. Alas it started switching itself off and straight back on again, couldn't be putting up with that!

What are you driving? Also, I LOVE your shack! Edit: Never mind. La d Rover. Can you do a video on your antenna set up? That looks like something that I want to throw up at my place in California. I’m thinking 20 meters…

@6:45 The beauty of QRP radio + amp is its a lower standy current draw when running on batteries. 300ma vs 1.2amp is a typical calculation.

1) Cast Iron is just the best and it's really non stick when used and cleaned often. All my cooking gear is cast iron. Heavy and bulky but oh so good. 2) If Icom Japan are reading this comment : MAKE AN ICOM 703 MKII WITH 25 WATTS. This would be the best HF. No batteries, no water fall.... Just a rugged 25w radio. 3) I studied Shackleton. He was a consummate leader of men. A great part of history but I must take this opportunity to say that Norway beat England to the pole. Anyway, today Norway and England are proud allies, friends and partners. Norway gifts England a Xmas tree each year placed at Trafalgar Square in thanks for support in WW2.

Despite the SFI near the 90s bands have seemed pretty poor over the past few weeks so you did ok, love the little icom 706 seems like icoms 891 equivalent. Great idea using a amp with a icom 705 or yeasu 817/8 don't see the issue as best of both worlds depending on the situation. No chance of accidentally blowing the amp too by over driving it.. barn looks a great place, great for a weekend night meet-up if ever covid loosens it's grip on us. 73 Jim 2E0HKM

It is a nice radio, as being a classic, well that would be Collins, Hallicrafter, Swan. Give it another 20yrs and IC-706 might be one. My opinion

I've used Callum's DX50 Kevlar wire with my EFHW. It'll behave much better than the stiff stuff. Be sure to include a compensation coil 78 inches or 1.98 meters from your transformer (six wraps around 1 inch PVC pipe).

I have the Mk2 but mine died. Will no longer turn on. Suspect a crack in one of the boards and there is no way I'm opening it up to look. There is no room in there for even a fart. Now it's a paperweight. They are nice radios however when they work.

Get a repairer to look at it eg Castle Electronics. Must be worth spending a couple hundred on getting it fixed?

@@NICKGAR7 Not worth it to me. Will sell it for parts probably.
