So, this is Italy. More specifically, the rolling hills, art, and architecture of Tuscany that everyone falls in love with. If you’ve been here, then you already know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, you will probably be scheming on how to get here by the end of this series.
Sometimes it’s hard to believe our own luck. So many of our most memorable moments have been nothing more than serendipity. And this week, we have an unintentional theme of exploring Tuscany through the ages. (Which I suppose shouldn’t be such a surprise in a country as ancient as Italy.) Because we arrived in San Casciano in Val di Pesa just in time for the medieval carnival.
Then, as you all know, we're suckers for learning how things are made. So, when we were invited to the last remaining goldsmith on Florence’s famous Ponte Vecchio (aka, the gold bridge), we couldn’t say no. Turns out, making gold jewels is a lot like making pasta.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

The true sign of a master Craftsman is when they are so good at what they do they make it look easy. Picasso was approached later in his life in a Cafe somewhere in Europe by fan with a pencil and napkin. She requested that do a quick sketch for her. He gladly obligated and 5 mins later hands it back to the woman. Just as she is about to take the sketch Picasso requests €10,000 (I'm sure it was not euros but work with me here on this one). She recoils in shock staying "it's just a 5 min sketch on a napkin why is it so expensive? Picasso responded that it may have only taken him 5 mins to do the piece it took him 50 years and countless other sketches to make that 5 mins happen.

Another difference between ice cream and gelato is gelato uses more milk and less cream AND doesn't use eggs like ice cream! Italy is a perfect balance of history and culture and Florence is a reason why! LOVE TRAMS! I used to live in Jersey City and Jersey City has a light rail system as well called the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. It has three services and a total length of 17 miles (compared to Florence's 10 miles/16.5 km system), connecting most of Hudson County. It runs on the streets on the Downtown JC portion, so it acts as a streetcar for a part of its journey. Gotta love it when there's governments like Japan or Florence that care about having superb transit for their citizens.

Pyongyang also has a tram network. Ours is a 53 km/33 miles system of four lines that first opened in 1989. We originally had a system during the Japanese era, but the original system was destroyed during the war, so we had to build a new one from scratch. The system uses Tatra trams made in the former Czechoslovakia while the Kumsusan line uses a 1940s Zurich tram as it's a shuttle service not connected to the other lines. Pyongyang in general is a walkable transit city with trolleybuses, trams, bike lanes, and the Pyongyang Metro. The Pyongyang Metro features patriotic mosaics as well as chandeliers inspired by the Moscow Metro.

The feature of the jewelry makers was absolutely captivating. I watch a lot of travel shows, and I have to say that jewelry feature was the most intimate, authentic, and detailed look into this Italian family craft I have seen. Perhaps you felt you rushed it out (your next video hinted that you felt that way), but I truly enjoyed it and will watch it over several times. It just captured something for me I cannot fully explain. Thank you. It seems to be true often that the best creative content happens when we feel it was not our best. We might not even know why, but I think on this one you should let the viewers decide how good it was, and for me it was your best ever! Keep up the amazing content.

You know you're in a village proud of its deep history when it has a legit medieval festival! And Florence is so breathtaking. A bottega? Sounds like a similar meaning to bodega! Here in New York, a bodega means a Latino corner store with groceries and sometimes it'll even have a resident cat that's either owned by the bodega owner or semi-feral! In Spain, a bodega means a cellar and the word didn't mean a convenience store until Cuba. Then the word made it to the US when Puerto Ricans adopted this word from their Cuban neighbors to sell comfort food. So seeing bottega meaning a workshop in Italy interests me as I just love seeing the similarities and differences between languages that are in the same groups, in this case Italian and Spanish as Romance languages! Learning languages can be wonderful, as each language is beautiful in their own way. A language is a door, and learning is the key to open said door to another world, another perspective.

In Denmark a bodega is a bar. It is in fact, what we call the bars, where all the guests are washed out alcoholics, that use the bar as their second home.

@murrayandjeandunnettcobine4120
That was one of your most fascinating videos! The Italians created so much of beauty, with both skill passed down for generations, and their eye for perfection of form. For example I love everything they make, I have Italian shoes that are 25 years old but still look brand new! (Of course I have kept the leather waxed and polished from new). And of course any Italian wine is superb. What amazes me is their priceless sculptures in the streets, ie Trevi fountain, and they don't get vandalised. When I left school I learnt custom wooden boatbuilding and cabinetmaking. Everything was hand made, one off, learnt from older masters. Timber was selected for its grain and beauty of colour contrast. One boat was 2.5 years of work. A privilege.

What a lovely visit to the Fratelli Piccini. The Wynns demonstrate such a great curiousity and respect, that they are worthy of all these details and the owners time. The generosity of the family sharing drinks on the balcony, with a magnificent view, is touching. Sharing traditions of festivals, skills of jewellry, etc, in the format of these well made videos is important and reminds of how our rulers and politicians have failed us particularly since the world wars of 20th Century.

We have amazing accomplishments to celebrate. Famine and poverty worldwide are lower now than ever. Medical experts can create vaccines and therapies faster than ever. Many common diseases have been eradicated. I am grateful for this progress, and thank the visionary politicians, industrial technologists, research scientists and the leaders of the past century. Have faith in our institutions and in science as they are our best hope. And admittedly there are always new populists professing anti-democratic policies how only they alone can lead us, divisively turning people against institutions, science and our neighbors, they could reverse progress short term if we dont recognize it. Traveling gives us all a better perpective on others, so thank you Wynns! for reminding us through your adventures abroad. The Wynns also help me have faith in the youth of today. Viva Wynns!

My wife and I just did Italy in September and Florence and the surrounding hills were our favorite. What a place. On the other side of the bridge and down one of the side streets, we ran into a party. They invited us into the restaurant and we had free wine and appetizers. I cannot remember the name of the event, but apparently it is a thing there with the locals. I tipped heavily and treasure that memory. We hired a car and went all around that area (and to a winery). Tuscany had me looking for villas to fix up!

I love how this goldsmith takes the time to show and explain business. North Pole in Old Montreal, Canada were the same for us. Fascinating, Thanks for sharing

It wasn't because of Easter, I've been watching for many years and it did not come up in my feed. First Tim ever!

This reminds me of your visit to a coffee plantation in South America, where you learned all about tasting coffee. You go into depth, and we learn along with you, a rarity in RU-vidLand. Thank you.

Absolutely loved all the images that you captured of Florence. It has convinced me to visit. As I was watching the conversation of the jewelry store owner talking about her family’s life’s work to Nikki and her Aunt, I was struck by how much they look alike. Her Aunt is a gorgeous and utterly charming woman and I think that as Nikki ages she will look like her. Jason is a lucky fella!
