Making Kururin: Rolling sticks! (traditional and weighted fidget toy)

Two ways to make Kururin rolling sticks. The first one is the more traditional solid Maple. The second is weighted on the ends to give it a more gentle roll. The Kururin is as much a game of skill as it is a fidget toy. This project is highly recommended!
*****
Just to clarify, the blue rolling stick at the beginning is different from the one shown in the later scenes. The second one is a refinement of the process after many tries. Its rolling action is incredibly smooth and balanced.
Shoe/pad: the ideal traction-foot seems to be the foam. Conveniently, it is also readily available. Rubber feels too hard, and thin silicone is too difficult to attach. I had also considered chamois and cork, but availability and expense were factors. Of the things we've tried, hot glue works second-best.
A note on operation: a smooth roll requires a smooth surface and a smooth Kururin. Clean glass or granite are the best surfaces, and the stick should be well-sanded and oiled to reduce friction. The featured blue stick had around three coats of Teak oil to give it that silky shine. Taking your time with crafting it will greatly enhance your ability. I still can't believe how well the (new) blue one works. I also can't believe how much I've improved!

Sorry, *I am not selling these.* But out of curiosity, how much do you think the blue one featured at the end is worth?

Really that's hard for me to determine. Often people never want to pay for what time you have involved in something. They are used to paying prices for things mass produced. Figet toys seem to get a premium though. I was curious about the cost as I have a friend with a toy store and thought these would be cool to sell there.

I'd say it's an optical illusion. The to piece isn't a cube. See how he turns the combined piece only slightly, that's to avoid breaking the illusion. My brain doesn't work well in 3d, so I can't picture the piece but I think it's almost flat with rhomboid sections.

I am an armature who hasn't built his lathe yet (no room in garage just yet) but from my understanding I think you could adhere a solid block of wood (with a screw for this application probably) and be able to turn it pretty easily with a shorter dowel rod that is a little thicker than what you need.

How does that actually work in terms of like physics and stuff?
@BigMjolnir
@BigMjolnir 7 лет назад
Unlocked wild guess is that the taper is actually a parabola.
@piteoswaldo
@piteoswaldo 7 лет назад
I think the curve is optimized for a maximally smooth weight transfer (minimizing the impact), and the foam at the point is needed to prevent sliding. Any sliding would represent wasted energy, disrupting the motion.
@cosmonaut379
@cosmonaut379 7 лет назад
Unlocked if you ask that on a RU-vid video like this just give up on any physics whatsoever
@TheUnlocked
@TheUnlocked 7 лет назад
Gavlick Apthesycerski youtube commenters can be very knowledgeable. You'd be surprised.
@cosmonaut379
@cosmonaut379 7 лет назад
Unlocked yes, they can, I meant as in showing the physics in a text block like on here it's not going to happen. It's a bit more complicated then can be shown here ... at it's simplest it's like 5 vectors operating against each other independently if you're leaving out any upward forces which gets really complicated really fast. But in short terms it's working on a quasi similar way as a curve of constant width on a non circular object but making up for the lack of constant width but to produce a semi wheel like behavior it has weighted ends so it tumbles. At least in two dimensions the rest is just up to balance
