If no one has ever told you before, you are like a giant warm hug. Everything about you feels cozy and wonderful. I just love your videos. I could listen to you talk for days. ❤ Merry Christmas 🎄
Thanks Kate. I love them. A few years back I made my daughters family a stocking each at her request. I did a letter ornament for each of the people in the family and added them to the stockings. They loved them.
When you held up the Christmas log cabin block, I suddenly was inspired to make a Block-of-the-Month (sort of) with a block for each actual month. Yours would be December naturally, and I could go all through the colors of the landscape in each month. It's for a gift. What fun! Thank you so much for your company, inspiration, and tutorials! A good RU-vid friend indeed. -Sally from MO
I hope that you know, Kate, that there are plenty of people who would be delighted to sew some names in cross stitch for you. The stockings are delightful. Lucky family. I am the lady that accosted you at the NEC when you and Anna had arrived and were making your way to your allotted stand. Apologies for holding you up but it was lovely to meet you both. Best wishes from Northern Ireland x
I'm always tempted to remind Kate that I met her at FoQ as well, but then, she's famous and I'm not, and she must meet so many people!! She's so lovely and authentic! I was terrified is be so eager to meet her and she'd be a shrew!! Not a chance!!! 🤣
These stockings for Rita and your new grandchild are beautiful. The fabrics are so lovely. I know they will love them. Thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful day, Kate. ❤😊
From bagmaking, I learned a tip for getting the lining to fit well. Increase the seam allowance by an eighth of an inch on the lining, and it will wrinkle less on the inside.
Oh, of course! Or in other words, if you're used to working with the stitching line, shave 1/8 of an inch / 3 mm off along the lining piece. :-) The principle is called "turn of cloth" in patternmaking, I believe - you do the same on lower collar pieces etc. All to acount for the fact that fabric does have its own bulk, and the "inside" piece will wrinkle and the whole thing will look uneven if you don't account for it. Even facings work better if you account for it (though there are various ways to account for it with more complicated pattern pieces like that). If you have thicker fabric - like a padded piece like here - you may even need to shave off a bit more.
@@beth12svist Interesting information. I just googled "turn of cloth" and read a brief article. It's something I never applied to quilting projects before. Thanks.
I am not one to ever covet another’s good, but I believe I broke the 10 th Commandment today. Your Christmas stockings made using the Liberty fabrics are just stunning. I was drooling over your stash of Liberty scraps and that is when I folded and started to covet , on a Sunday . The strip quilting just showcases the beauty of each piece of fabric and I could not help myself. Mea culpa Kate.
Home made stockings are wonderful. When my three children were small I made stockings for the 5 of us but I made them all the same size so no one would complain that they got a smaller one. They are now all grown and wanted to take their stockings with them when they moved out on their own. At one time we had a dog that found my son's stocking on the floor and when he smelled the candy that was inside he chewed the toe trying to get at it. I offered to make my son a new one, but he didn't want a new one, he wanted the one he had had for as long as he could remember. So I patched it up the best I could and he still uses it today (he's 37 years old). Then they wanted me to make more for their spouses and for each grandchild that came along. It looks like I'm done with stocking making for awhile, or at least until there is another generation! Thanks for showing us yours.
That's sweet that he thought enough of the stockings to request one for his wife and your grandson. The stockings are great! LOVE that quilt block for your patrons!!!! I haven't embroidered anything substantial in quite some time but I didn't used to enjoy it.
Beautiful stockings Kate. I remember making stockings for my sister's family. I make separate name tags that could be attached, allowing each person to choose their own stocking. I realised I'd gone too far when I made bone shaped stockings for their pups. 😂
So beautiful stockings, you've made, Kate! Nothing more satisfying than (adult) children asking for handmade things. I love, that Owen want you to continue the tradition. My daughter asked me to make a Christmas stocking for my grandchild last year - also with embroidery. To me the difficult part was the sewing, but I managed 🙂. I have to do it again next year, as my daughter is pregnant with my second grandchild, and now I'm looking forward to it. Next time I'll try with wadding too.
What a blessing. I fondly remember my stocking as a child. My grandmother made them for all of us. It was like seeing an old friend when it came out. It did not survive to my adulthood. I never forgot it.
I also remember my Christmas stocking. My mother's sister, my aunt Judy, hand knitted the first of us six kids's stalkings and decorated them. Then my mother learned how from her and knitted the last two. Sadly, mine didn't last very far into adulthood because of a problem with mice and not having put the stocking up correctly😢 yours are so beautiful Kate, I would have never thought to attach them to batting like that and then quilt them. Wonderful idea! Merry Christmas!
These are absolutely lovely! There is another lady who makes beautiful stockings, pot holders, coasters, and quilts using fabric scraps like you. Her name is Beth and her RU-vid channel is My Sewing Room. Sometimes you mention other quilters, so I hope you don't mind me mentioning her. I know your family kiddos will love these as they are made by you and are so pretty. Thanks!
Toe for tangerine, heel for apple with a half crown coin pushed in, foot for nuts, leg for presents! North Yorkshire in the forties. The nuts and fruit were a big deal at that austerity period.
I only embriodered names and added bells and trims to bought stockings for my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, but if I'd seen your method long ago I'd have rather tried my hand at that. So beautiful and durable and loved. And not too difficult! 🤗💖
Beautiful stockings, Kate. So special and meaningful for them, even as adults.💕💕💕 I made stockings for our daughters when they were little. (We still use those here!) Also, for our two grandchildren. I also made one for my husband (then boyfriend, 44 yrs ago💕), and for myself, and bought a nice one for our son in law when he joined our family. I was busy making our daughter and her hubby a quilt that year, so I needed to find a stocking quickly. But it still looks nice 17yrs later.😊 Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Hello from Barbara in Missouri USA. Thinking of a project for my Grandkids for Christmas. Thank you for this wonderful idea. I havent done this for them since they were babies! I cant wait to begin. Merry Christmas to everyone.
I wish to goodness that we were closer. I have loved counted cross stitch over the last 40 years. This was the first year I got to do stockings for my son, his wife and my new baby grandson. I did crazy quilt with fancy hand stitches, They took awhile, but I put loads of love in their box. P.S. Kate, I'd do the cross stitch for you and mail it from NM, USA.
So happy, as usual, that I watched today! But today you saved Christmas for me! I just labored over 6 stockings for my granddaughter 's family. I wasn't looking forward to the 10 I had to make for my youngest daughter, but your quick pattern is a lifesaver! Thank you!
These stockings are so homey and charming! They will be a treasure for years to come as your family grows. Lucky family to have a matriarch who loves to quilt and craft! Thank you for sharing.
What a lovely tradition! My sisters and I all had homemade stockings made by a great aunt who also embroidered our names on them. So this year I continued a more modern version of the tradition for making a stocking for the new baby of my niece, but I did machine embroidery to put his name on it. Such lovely stockings Kate!
Kate, I am home with covid. I haven't turned my TV on since getting sick. Until today, and it popped up you making stockings. You are such a treat to me. Happy Holidays if I don't to watch soon.
❤❤❤greate thanks Kate, it is a easy way for a beginner like me. Your lessions helps me to recicel I had at home from kids clothes to bed wear and my own clothes. It gives me in bad time happines . Thats your wounderfull work for orhers. Your are a christmas star
What a wonderful idea to make a quilted Christmas stocking. Just the spur I needed to make a lovely gift for my great-grandson .Can't wait to get on with it !! It wont be as beautiful as yours Kate but its the inspiration you give, Thank you so much. Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family.🤩
I’ve been making stockings for all of my family members for years. They are the felt, sequins, beads, embroidery stockings. Each one has their name embroidered on them. I have 4 kids and spouses and now 10 grands so I’ve made quite a few. I love to make them. I can sit and watch TV and work on them. Your family will be so happy that they have stockings that you made! They are beautiful! ❤️
Just made a small stocking for my niece for christmas. It was really easy and quick to get it together. I did the sewing on the wadding on an angle and used non-christmasy fabrics so she can use it all year long. Got stuffed with some little crafting supplies I had on hand.
Hi Kate you bought back lovely memories for me years ago l made stockings for my kids and friends l appliquéd their initial on them greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 Debbie
Wonderful. Kate I just love the Christmas stockings. I made advent calendars for my grandchildren this year but you have inspired me to make them stockings . Thanks Kate. I always love your videos Calming and enjoyably
Lovely, Kate! I hear that your family is growing and that is an enormous blessing. Making their stockings with such love and care will surely bring sweet memories in days to come. You have been blessed with children sensible as you are and that makes all the difference in these days of so much selfishness and hatred. God bless you all!
Darling Stockings! What wonderful Memories will be made each year with them! I didn't have a mantle for many years....I often used a peg hook board in the wall. I also had a coat rack and hung Stockings instead of coats. I recently saw a quilt ladder with Stockings hung on it. I'll bet Owen and his family will find a spectacular way to hang them
Kate, what a beautiful tradition for your family. I love the fabrics you chose for the stockings. I am in the USA but my mum was from Widnes England. Our tradition at Christmas was of course stockings which mum made and mincemeat pies, trifle and jam tarts. Mum is gone but I have carried on that tradition as my daughter and now my granddaughter. I cherish those things❤ as I am sure your family will for years. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your family. I believe I have some stockings to make for my great-grand children.
Kate, I have been following you for a long time now, and it never ceases to amaze me how natural you are with working with material and your sewing machine, they are part of you it seems! You are truly amazing, and a wonder to watch. I love the way you explain things in such a natural normal way, so us beginners can follow ever step. Bless you, and thank you for sharing your life with us all on here. Love Jilly & Madge the rescue greyhound, from West Devon, England. xxx
We have our stockings that we fill hanging on the mantle. But I also have a bunch hanging as a timeline: my childhood stocking made by my grandma; my husband’s childhood stocking; each of our young adult stockings; a slipper I tried knitting him when we were dating but I was new and didn’t understand gauge so it turned out stocking size; pretty ones I got for our first married home together; Army ones for the time we were both in the Army together; our daughter’s first stocking. Now I’m knitting one with Arne and Carlos for decoration, and maybe I’ll sew us new ones for the mantle.
I watched this and then made 6 stockings. Everyone loves them. I'm a quilter so this was fun and easy. The way you did the lining made them all so finished and nice.
Lovely project...I made Christmas stockings for my four grandchildren.... This is the first year that 'number 4' will be using his.... I used my embroidery machine to do the names on them as my hands aren't as good as they were but they were lovely.
Love the stockings! I have crocheted stockings for my Mum and myself and instead of having our names on them, I brought Christmas ornaments of our initials which hang with the stockings!
Those stockings are works of art! I made a plainer stocking for my little one and embroidered the name on the cuff in back stitch before I attached it. It is nowhere near as fancy but they love that Mummy made it and it is hung with excitement every year.
Sweet family traditions are always the best memories! These are adorable and got my creativity flowing. Thanks for sharing these and all the love, too❤
The stockings are beautiful Kate. It was nice to see the steps you took to make them, as it really makes it doable once you break it down. Precious family traditions to treasure.
Lovely stockings. I just finished two quilts and three pillow cases. My sewing machine is idle….stockings will be next up….love your style with lining. I still have knitted stockings a coworker made for my boys 46 years ago with their names on them. They are both coming for Christmas this year and I plan to give them their original stockings. I will make your pattern for their wives and grandchildren. Merry Christmas to you and your wonderful family. Blessings, Dawn
Everyone move over so I can get on the lime green sofa.... hello Kate from the heart ❤️ of Illinois USA 🇺🇸...aaawww mommy 🐻 besr, daddy 🐻bear and baby🐻 bear... adorable 😍
Dear Kate, I do so love your how to videos and the music and your voice is soooo relaxing! I made stockings for multiple grandchildren this year and cut letters from felt and straight stitched to top width or long length of stocking after quilting it. I have no wish to do any embroidery or stitching, too impatient for that! Thank you for your time and happy Christmas.
