Making Lipless Crankbaits, that work

Making lipless crankbaits has been hit-or-miss for me lately. I might make an excellent lure one day and follow it up with a dud the next. So I did a bunch of experimentation and came up with a bit of a formulaic approach to designing and building lipless crankbaits. I even learned some subtle tricks to add a bit more shimmy to the action. #lures #luremaking #lurepainting #woodlure

I've learned a ton from your channel. I have been binge watching lure making channels for a couple of months and figured I have some of this all figured out. Ha! Cutting baits isn't a issue, however spraying them is more of a challenge then I would of thought. Cleaning the airbrush between colors is a royal pain. All of these videos make it look fairly simple but it's not as easy as I looks. Besides being a engineer you're also a fantastic artist! Thanks for your efforts in posting the videos. Just know it's certainly appreciated. I look forward to the next episode.

I tried building my first lipless lure, followed your sizes (so I thought) to the letter, put the weight high up and it swam like the Red October on a crazy ivan manoeuvre ! It was way too light, sort of corkscrewed around, clipped the surface.... not good. I added some weight well forward and low and it was a great improvement. Then I found these comments and now I feel a whole lot better... its not just me ! Experience is a hard lesson to learn, keep up the technical stuff I'm learning so much.

As an engineer who specialized (in school mind you) in fluid dynamics and hydraulics I just wanted to say that not only do your videos provide a much needed refresher on the basics for me I also appreciate the work you’ve obviously put in to applying those principles effectively to lure design. The infinite variables that go into how a lure performs is daunting, if it wasn’t they would have an app for that. You have done an excellent job of showcasing the things that matter most from the things that might matter sometimes and making that distinction is a truly invaluable skill that only incredible passion combined with incredible perseverance can supply. I have the degree so what… without what you share I would be a lifetime behind where I am and god knows how much money (well more money haha) in the scrap bucket of failed designs. Thank you sir.

i have watched this several times because i have built a couple before and was really humbled by their poor performance. I have crankbaits down to where i can adjust the diving lip angle, size and shape to get a tight wobble to a large wobble. rarely do they give me issues. Lipless however is another story lol. so, thanks Franco I will try the measure ments and weight placement to see if I can get something that is satisfactory. Well done video as always!!!

Yes...I like it. The lure is shaped for long casts and that means they had to get clever with the little belly keel to move the center of drag forward so the lure will walk-the-dog. It would be a good way to show the principles in play. Thanks for the suggestions.

The fin directly affects the boundary layer and shed wakes from the trailing edge. The dorsal and pectoral fins work in tandem (probably important in swimbaits.) Several interesting papers on the fluid dynamics of fish fins: academic.oup.com/icb/article/50/6/1155/629042 web.mit.edu/towtank/www/papers/drag-reduction-fish.pdf Your video does a great job in analyzing crankbait design!
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 3 года назад
Thank you for watching and thanks for the links. One of the big reasons that I am reluctant to use fins on my lures is that they tend to dampen good lure action. It's easy to forget that on a fish, fins are active control and propulsion devices. On a lure they are static surfaces that are usually only there for esthetics and end up being more of a design liability than a benefit. On these types of crankbaits though, they appear to be a possible strategy for better action. The price for the better action is a reduction in dynamic stability. Choose your poison...I guess😉.

Seriously I really enjoy your videos. I thought I could just put an eye on top with weight towards the front... not the case. Thank you for this video. I’ve only been making lures for a few months. Things I have difficulties with are, making lips symmetrical, and painting with different nozzles. There are many videos out there, but none of them really explain the nozzle and needles. I have been painting with a , actually I’m not sure, it came with nozzle and needle in it already. It’s great for covering not so great for details so a video on nozzle and needle types would be awesome. I also have an idea for a top water or crank bait with a replaceable tail that would come out the back of the lure like a muskrat. I want to be able to use different color soft plastics, So I have to design a pin or something that would lock the tail in the center hole at the back of the lure, but also is able to be taken out and not too bulky. Any guidance or ideas would be cool thanks for the videos. I really enjoy the technical side of lure making, since I usually like to wing it
@EngineeredAngler

Yes me too...I have put the weight low and forward on the lure and had good success but, the action quality is less predictable, with some lure not working at all. Very informative! I'm trying to make a lipless crank to fish as deep as possible, mostly vertical. How does weight dictate the lures length, if it all? I needat least 1.5 oz of weight - and suggestions on length?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 3 года назад
The size of the lure is going to have to be big enough to get that much lead in it . I recommend you use a dense wood if you're making it out of wood. If you plan to just jig it vertically, the length is not going to make a big difference. I assume you're trying to get it to sink as fast as possible. So you should keep it as small as possible and follow the proportions I used...as close as possible. Good luck.
@matthewbeckwith663
@matthewbeckwith663 3 года назад
@@EngineeredAngler thanks for the response Yes - I'd like the lure to get down as fast as possible. It does thus make sense to limit the overall size of the lure (so long as it's large enough to hold the weights, like you describe above). I wasn't sure whether the weight:length impacted (significantly) the wobble. I'm struggling to understand what causes this lure to wobble/shimmy. Same with blade baits...I cannot put my finger on the physics of the system. 🤔 What are the guiding principles to this lures action? Does center of gravity v. Center of resistance play a role (great vid btw)? Is there turbulent and lift forces at work as the lure/blade is pulled through the water?
@EngineeredAngler

Today I did some reading regarding vortices, hydrofoils, Bernouli's Equation, Reynolds Numbers, etc. Read a few abstracts, much of it was over my head for sure. Don't even use those calculations I make the lure and you feel the lower you don't you know it in your head so you just carve it you carve what you feel and you don't have to put weights in it you put your hooks on it put them in the right spot bingo you don't even need the weights I've been doing them that way for 40 years and they've been good lures

Very complete video sir! You asked for suggestions... what about a long casting Tarpon lure? Would be curious to see what you come up with! I have made a few designs work pretty decent in my shop. If you have a moment, check them out on instagram roggies_rigs 🤙 Once again, great vid and build sir!
