Their cards were so bad, especially with each other, they knew their pile of cards wouldn't even be a deck. So, their only chance at winning was to make three separate tricks, and use their comedian training to keep their opponent off balance.
@@LibertyMonk Not to mention, drawing perfectly what they needed each time to activate those three different 'combos' without, somehow, drawing dud hands.
Does the combo even work though? Oh wait, it does. You can stack the triggers to return the Archfiend to the opponent before losing but you still control the oil counter trigger on the stack; had to think it through :D
@@2LettersSho Nah, you send it over on the turn it would go to 1 oil counter, not 0. Because if it goes to 0 during your upkeep, you lose no matter who controls it. The ability was put on the stack with you as the controller. So "you" will still refer to you. They put it from 2 to 1, then sent it over. Which means Thoralf would automatically lose on his upkeep, no matter how the triggers get stacked.
@@shieldgenerator7 The aggressive high bids to keep Thoralf bidding back conservatively for his best card, landing him right where she wants him. Chef's kiss, perfect.
Ah yes, the tale as old as time: One finely-tuned infinite combo deck against a pile of "I have no idea if this is going to work but it would be soooo cool if it did, let's put it in just in case!". But seriously, that was a very cool matchup, I hope you had as much fun cooking with these cards as I had watching it!
Honestly, this is how wizards should build duel decks. High synergy decks with cards that would normally see little to no play. I would love to whip decks like this out when a friend comes by.
@@StickyBombLauncher Well, not quite. They only had a couple of rares, and mostly just felt like draft decks. I’m talking actually somewhat tuned decks with proper synergy.
21:42 lmao! This was a great back and forth, at first I thought that Thoralf's deck was stronger due to its synergies, but then Loading Ready Run's combination of R&D with mind control masterfully neutralized everything Thoralf could do and set up their little hot potato for a kill, and then I was impressed again with the next match where they perfectly set up that Hidetsugu with their gambling, this felt like a perfect match up of strategic planning vs chaotic energy, and you can't bet against chaos.
background watching so hadn't seen the Hidetsugu's Second rite in hand then looked up and burst out laughing especially the Thoralf had his combo in hand
Mage's Contest has been one of my favorite cards for a while now, I hadn't thought of the Second Rite combo but now I'm definitely putting that in something! I love this sort of deckbuilding challenge, thanks for a great collab video!
The comedic thing is that Thoralfs favourite card in magic is actually hidetsugu’s second rite and then he Lost to it. Oh and by the way these cooking videos are really good 👍🏻
We need a supercut of all the best moments in cardmarket games. Like thoralf loosing at 10. Andrea giving pro red to save himself and the topdeck from Karsten to kill Thoralf after two FOF
Honestly now I’m motivated to buy more cards for both a huge cube for stuff like this! That and maybe buy more 4-ofs of cool cards I like and just have some 60 card fun. Commander is cool but this would be something to do with friends at a house party!
Graham and Kathleen from LoadingReadyRun are some of the easiest people to root for in the world! I love watching them play and I always have fun cheering for them to win! The chef battles are such an awesome idea and both sides delivered some awesome combos!
11:14 Captain Rex Nebula is actually more legal than you would think since Unfinity made the distinction between acorn cards and vintage legal. Hell, Saw in Half actually got reprinted with Bloomburrow in one of the precon commander decks, and it was from Unfinity as well.
Magic is a game, where actively trying to lose custody battles will benefit you ;-D Very happy with the video and that we got another Masterchef-style video. I love watching people brew and use some absolutely obscure cards to win. And a game like Magic has so many of them! Hoping though that we might get to see Kathleen playing in a future video too^^
How have I not heard of this? I'm going to watch all of these now. Also the amount of drawing exactly what was needed in the opening hands for that pilot deck was so crazy, I thought I was playing MTGA xD
Remind me to never, ever in my life play poker with Kathleen. That bluffing power was even able to kill Toralf with his favorite card... Wow. I love those Card-master videos! Especially since this time doesn't feel like someone won on the technicality of sideboards. Will you do a "Master of Masters" episode with the winners of these games? This would be so cool (even though getting all the guests to agree on a single day to meet would be hard).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Archfiend Custody combo doesn't work because Thoralf could stack the triggers so that he gives away the Archfiend first and then the oil counters effect resolves, at which point his opponents control the creature and the effect, and they are the ones to lose. If you are confused about this interaction, there was a Magic puzzle video on this same channel where Jamin had to stack effects in a similar fashion to give control of a "bad" trigger to his opponents. I might be wrong, but this is my understanding of controlling effects. Edit: I mean, it WOULD work if the turn they give it away is the same turn the last oil is removed, but it definitely wouldn't work as they think it did at 18:50 Edit: Nevermind, I just found the video I was thinking of and it's not what I remembered. So I am probably wrong and I misunderstood how such effects work. For context, the video is this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OHoJPjtfq2o.htmlsi=XSpsc6eoa42pBFof
@@blackdawn99ify Why not? It creates a copy of skill borrower, then gives the copy haste. Then since the copy has haste, it can tap to create a copy of skill borrower, and give that copy haste.
@@xchronox0 Unless I’m missing something, it’s because Skill Borrower specifically copies *activated* abilities, which haste is not. If you had a way to give all your creatures haste, that would do it but it’s a much less clean combo
@@zacharypoplawski1076 No, the combo actually does work. Skill Borrower can’t copy Kiki-Jiki’s passive haste, but his activated ability grants the copy haste. So, as long as the first skill borrower isn’t summoning sick, the loop is functional.
@@zacharypoplawski1076 Haste is not an active ability, you are correct. However, the active ability that IS being copied gives the creature copy it creates haste. It's right in the ability text.
Favorite thing with Rex Nebula: Brazen Dwarf and Assault Suit. turn the Dwarf into a Vehicle, slap the Assault Suit onto it, have it deal damage, start rolling dice and don't stop till everyone's dead. (Sigarda's Aid makes it really easy, since you can flash the Assault Suit in and auto-equip it)
Wow, I loved this video and gameplay! This channel is a reminder of the fun and wonder that Magic can bring out of us. And it's often the weirdo cards that end up being the most exciting and memorable experiences!
This is fantastic. The decks remind me of the kind of casual decks people used to share way back in the 2000s (remember Magic Deck Vortex?). I'd love to see you guys do this again some time!
Could Thoralf have given the Archfiend of Dross back before the removal of the last oil counter? Genuinely curious because i thought you could choose which "beginning of upkeep" trigger goes on the stack first. 18:31
Great episode, thanks guys ! It did seem a little unbalanced on paper though, given the choice I'd take Trade Routes / Equilibrium / Skill Borrower any day of the week ^^'
This is amazing, can only imagine the rest of the office laughing so hard during the editing that they fall off their chairs 😂 I had to rewatch the life biding war, so amazing.
Great matches fun magic. And can we note how much fun and better and interesting symmetrical magic is. When the enchantments effect the whole board it makes the games so much more interesting
It's so refreshing to see actual deckbuilding that doesn't involve just copying a tier-1 pro deck or being in line with the current meta. The best games have the most diverse decks.
That was such a great win at the end! But I also loved the second game. Although Kathleens and Grahams deck seemed a lot worse, they somehow pulled it off! ♥
Anyone else notice how at 20:03 a Fetid Heath is drawn and then vanishes from the hand when Flagstones gets played, with Flagstones still displayed as a hand-card?😅
Fantastic concept. I think you could probably do a full "episode" in this "chopped" kinda style. Appetizer, Main, Dessert. 40 Card limited deck, Modern Deck, Pauper deck... or something of the like? Would be fun!
19:00 actually both triggers go for the stack and the remove oil counter goes first BUT Toralf is the active player, so the ther opp effect of giving the archifiend happens before the removing the oil. So he should give the archifiend then remove the counter. After that I don't know how it would happen. xD
