Visited his shop while in Florence in Sept 2015 and left with many sheets of paper and a leather bound. Journal that he made for us while we waited.

My dream is to become a professional bookbinder. I wanted to start bookbinding school last year but I couldn't find any craftsman willing to take me in during my learning... I still hope one day I will be able to learn these marvelous arts that are bookbinding and artisanal paper printing (I am learning "modern" printing in school now), but till that day arrives, I watch this kind of video that simply makes my heart burn with passion and longing to discover more about this. I am very grateful I found this video, the shop address is now on the top of my list for the day I will go visit Italy :)

That is exquisite! Just like everything in Firenze is! Firenze is 100 % total and complete eye candy! The art, the monuments, the streets, the food, everything they do is extremely artistic down to the smallest detail. They know the meaning of "God is in the detail!" I've been there many times and never get enough of the exquisiteness of this city and all its artisans! Pure magic!

@4:55, he is checking which side is mordanted. Mordanting or aluming the paper makes it able to fixed the colours to the paper.

Next Voyage of the Paper Marbling Istanbul Ebru from Istanbul to pass through the Silk Road to Europe is based on the art of the 15th century . Some people using this route for passengers and commerce , the country returning to Istanbul from marbled paper and decorated with marbling should have brought some books with them. This paper in Europe , was named as the Turkish paper over the centuries , to be used as decorating books and valuable papers were purchased from Turkish ebru artist. The slightest alteration of this paper is to be used as valuable documents of each is different because of the marbling paper and on them was not clear.

It is a very beautiful art form, and no end of creativity. I am assuming that it was the gentleman's shop, and would that mean he makes his living from selling these works of art? What type of price are you looking at for the piece in that size created? Thank for the upload, and the setting was just great.
@JulieHedlund
@JulieHedlund 7 лет назад
He did not charge me for that piece, because we are friends. I think individual pieces are around 6 Euro. The framing I had done at home was much more expensive. :-)

I've tried with acrylic paint on tapwater, and oil thinned with turpentine, but it does not work for me. What do I have to do to make mine look like this, and be as firm as this?
@schedelworld
@schedelworld 7 лет назад
I've been trying to figure that out as well. It always looks like the Italian makers are using regular water, but a trick I've read is to mix the water with methylcellulose, which makes the water thicker and makes the paint float on top more readily. The method I saw used acrylic paint watered down.
