The moog patch as you go lower in the scale reminds me a lot of the moog bass sounds on a lot of the old Stevie wonder albums in the 70s. It would be so cool to see more moog sound design lessons
Made some coffee. Powered up the Nord Stage, selected a Rhodes model and started adding effects and amp sim until I had a nice warm sound. Opened the Moog Mini app on my ipad and twiddled some knobs to get that creamy lead sound. Played some lush m11 chords. A nice way to spend a saturday morning. Thanks Matt!
@@modalmixture I was lacking reverb. Once I added that it, it sounded better, but not the same. I guess a £10 app, which is a digital recreation, is never going to sound as good as the original analogue instrument.
Hello, I have Model D on my iPad, and I’ve got quite different sound. Filter and envelope section must be very different from the patch seen on the video.
@@voytecgrobor7576 You probably have to experiment and tweak it a little, and also check your effects, but I got it to sound extremely close to Matt's sound.
This how to could have easily just been “have amazing gear and be an amazing player” but you broke everything down wonderfully for anyone who may not have the gear/experience and passed on a lot of knowledge. Thumbs up!
moog + electric piano 😍 It doesn't get any better than this And I love the way you explain the sound+music combo. There's a lot of people recommending strict formula that don't take into account the response of the instrument. And both moog and Rhodes are very 'organic' instruments
I came across a nice little idea, especially for VST-users - in case the tremolo/phaser hits too hard all the time, get yourself control over the dry-wet-signal and make the trem come and go while holding on to that sustain pedal. Thanks for inspiring me so much Matt!
A good programmable env-follower or a dynamic EQ or a MB limiter would do too. Try Melda stuff, you won't find more programmable control elsewhere. Cheers
Ever since I first heard Jamiroquai, I've looked for that minimoog lead sound, I didn't know what it was for so long. So glad now I know, thank you!! btw saw jamiroquai live in 2013, So good!!
There is a TON of demo vids on gear and all.... but majority of them have bad music when they test the equipment. But this here, is perfect! Liked and Subscribed
Thank you so much for explaining the chords you use and how you combine them. It's like a magician giving away his tricks. I'm not a real synth guy, but really into harmonics, and this was very clarifying to me. Amazing what skills you've developed as an autodidact (if I remember correctly), and how you generously share it with us. All the best, sir!
So good to hear someone slightly reserved with vast knowledge than the usual over confident type with very little to actually say.. love this channel...👍
The Bob Ross of keys. That term gets thrown about a lot, but Matt and Bob share a similar vibe, of letting the art/music itself do most of the teaching. Both chill af too, which really helps get into the headspace of being ready to absorb knowledge.
A little note: my drumset is in the same room where my computer is, tonight I left the strings on the snare tightened, and I absolutely loved how they resonated with the synths! Thank you for all the music, Matt ❤
I think this is the video that made me start learning the keys 3 years ago, at the age of 40 (used to play guitar back in my 20s). I've now got to a point that I really enjoy, mostly because this video helped me focus only at things I really like! I can now use freely almost all of these sounds in all keys, including that altered dominant at 15:43. Thank you so much for this!
These videos are SO wonderful. You’re just as skilled at teaching, and pacing your videos as you are a musician! Thanks for putting your time and passion in these vids!
It'll take hours for me to find that 'sweet spot' - but at least you get an impression what you could look for (if identical or only similar to your sound). Thank you a lot!
Dude, I'd never heard of Lonnie Liston Smith before I read your comment, but went and checked him out. The first song I clicked was Expansions. Wow! Thank you.
I'm going to listen to. That title 'Expansion' reminds me 'Contracts' by Jasper Van't Hof (great other e-piano man) and Archie Shepp in the live album MamaRose, I thing they both express about human baby life, it may be quite moving (long intro)
Even without understanding a single word in English, I am here to admire this magnificent sound made for those who really have a gift, Thank you, I will save these melodies one by one. Hugs from Brazil.
@@zacmann7850 I asked the same question, and Google Tanslate replied, "Why don't you ask Alexa, you cheater!" and now it won't launch anymore. Should I open a support ticket, or just give it some space for a while?
This takes me back to listening to a radio show called "Dreamtime" here in Australia. It was on late Sunday night and comprised long, dreamy ambient compositions, intermingled with experimental and environmental sounds - sheer bliss. It was like sinking into a soft cloud of serenity.
Wow Radio has gifted me a handful of moments like those. Mostly as a kid an teen. That was pure magic, when that would happen. Providing a kind of deep satisfaction and connection that’s hard to have in the current world. I miss that.
I love how simply and directly you explain what you're doing, and immediately follow your explanation with demonstration. For example, the bit with the minor 9ths as well as the F minor arpeggio and just randomly moving about with it. All the information you're giving is so immediately useful and practical, and you explain in a way I've never really considered before. Excellent video, you've got yourself a new sub :)
Thank you for making this video's Matt! Very inspiring! i always start playing the keys here after watchting you video's ;) greetings from The Netherlands!
Matt, any chance you could record the whole album of this dreamy, jazz 1970s Rhodes music? I'm dead honest. It's the most relaxing, mood lifting music ever. 😍😍
Way over my head for the time being but the take away: Learn the 7th and 9th chords and inversions, skip the 3rd in the left hand, play around with major 7th and see what happens when I add a 6th. No crazy progressions, just start with 6-2-5-1 G-C-F-Bb and move up and down the keyboard. Thanks a lot!
@@ianflurrance8438 Thanks. I guess that's it, sit down at the keys and put the time in. It's quite inspiring though, how Matt can make a few chords sound so good.
Thank you! I bought a Fender Rhodes Stage and figured out real quick you don’t ‘play’ it like a regular piano. Listening to old 70 s music there’s a particular way it’s played. You explained it perfectly from how you set it up and which kind of altered chords you’re running. Helped out a lot. Yes, you can buy a Korg SV1 or a Crumar 7 or Keyscape VSTs but there’s something about owning and having the real deal.
Thank you Matt! As an ardent analogue man I have really enjoyed subscribing to your gift to music related creatives. And your have such a warm tone and delivery so thank you - much appreciated
I got quite close, I guess, but not there yet. Seems all the Boog reviews showing how close it is to minimoog lied to us. Image with a patch here: drive.google.com/file/d/1ZtxXYVhg6KQXVZB3qhXuje5PJ4LWEEPh/view?usp=sharing Also, I discovered that adding some EXT IN VOLUME makes bit closer. Basically I configured the oscilators and tweaked Contour and Emphasis.
Jamiroquai, when I first hear and saw that video. ❤❤ I was over a friend's house and no one knew what I was talking about. I kept saying it was a sound I loved and all I could say was Jamariquai and talk about a guy in a top hat walking on a moving floor. They all looked at me as if I was crazy. I didn't care, I found what I was looking for. Lol😅
For anyone with a Korg Minilogue XD, here's a pic with my patch settings to sound like the MiniMoog. If you can get closer, let me know how. Cheers! cp-the-nerd.com/images/Minilogue_XD_MiniMoog_Patch.jpg
Matt, I'm an amateur guitar player trying to play blues since 1987 and now I'm into funk. And altough I'm a guitarist I absolutely love your videos. It's mesmerizing how how smooth, rhythmic, fluid and yet powerful is your keyboard playing. You are for me a huge source of both learning and inspiration. Also the way you share the sounds, the order of the effects is also really helpful. You are a gifted musician, but also a talented RU-vid creator so please, please, please keep these videos coming. All the best, Oscar.
Over the past nine months, since this video came out, I have been trying to get a Moog sound from a Boog. This video is life changing, excellent, amazing. I obtained a 1965 Crossfield Reel to Reel tube (valve) recorder. The signal was sent into the reel to reel, from there I also used a Roland RE-20 Space Echo (floor model) and a Boss CS-3 Compressor, a dbx120 Dynamic Subharmonic Synthesizer. I ended up buying a Moog Subsequent 37, but not before making very beautiful sounds with the Boog. I was never able to get the sounds in this video but came so close at times it was hard to tell the difference. Thank you Matt Johnson. Thank you.
Wow I loved the part of the sweatspot. You just gave us a super tip there, for playing with emotions. Direct from the mouth of an amazing player. I feel you so close now with these videos, I never imagined that the keyboardist of Jamiroquai would teach me something like this. It’s just great in a bizarre way! Thanks for doing these videos!
made the mini Moog patch on iPad app called MODEL D from MOOG used some inboard delay sound very cook paired that w/ ARTURIA labs 4 and the suite case fender prep set patch called CHORUS ME what a great sound thanks for taking me back to the 70"s your channel is great
So generous to teach his craft really love how the greats are giving back. Alan Pasqua has a master class out on RU-vid as well. Really great to watch technique but also here you’re getting the music tech, too, and a huggy bear reference
