Making metal gears with a scrap made dividing head!

I'm in the middle of a large metal lathe project and needed a way to make some metal gears. Buying a dividing head is too expensive right now and I decided to make this simple one from scrap material. Anybody can make this, you just have to be a little resourceful.

Not what I meant when I looked up "how to build a metal gear" but this is cool.

Thats incredible, love when guys make really cool stuff with just basic, or even scrap materials, really enjoyed the video, its all about ingenuity and thinking outside the box, and using your imagination, very well done, thanks for posting!!

You can cut an eighty tooth gear using a forty tooth gear for divisions if you cut a central notch in the detent which allows you to engage not only the spaces between the teeth but also the tips of the teeth doubling the number of divisions.

Dear Mr Thunder, you don't need to keep looking for compliments by bemoaning your material and skills, you know and we know , your good, well done, I am going to try the same, when I get my old lathe back on the road. thank you very much, regards Colin UK.

This would work great if you needed to make copies of several gears with the same bore, like another set of change gears. Good simple fixture!

Absolutely Love it. More people need to just get the damn job done rather than obsessing over the "Proper" way of doing things. My 2 rules. 1 does the finished part meet spec. 2 does the tool make the part in a way where no one will get hurt. This my brother meets both!!

Freaking brilliant man, as i was watching, one thing came to mind, r.c. car gears, cheap easy to find tooth counts. Once my mill is up and going, i very well might have to copy and modify your idea! Good to see ya got to the editing.

Pretty great. My dad cut clock gears on the lathe by mount his index behind the chuck and then drug the cutter. Sounds crude but after running gears into each other with lap compound the clock worked.

Make yourself up a little tail stock With a driving dog & you can make custom hex head bolts out of round stock. I've used my atlas index fixture with one of those milling machines quite a bit to do just that. Quite handy

Hi Thunderdog, if you cut a slot in the detent 90 deg to the v point you already have you can double the amount of teeth for one change wheel eg 80 teeth from a 40 tooth change wheel, simply by rotating the detent 90 deg for every cut. Good job and a simple solution Cheer
@ThunderDog
@ThunderDog 7 лет назад
Really?! Let me follow you on this, the .25" detent gets a little "V" cut into it 90 deg to the current setup. Then you would basically cut a tooth like I've already done followed by rotating the detent. I'm assuming that the newly cut V detent would only fit by setting it onto the top of the very next gear tooth? Am I missing something or is that my lack of math skills on full display?
@raymondmarteene7047

ThunderDog no mate you got it, the groove registers on top of the tooth effectively doubling the the number divisions. Read about it in a book by G H Thomas, an old model engineer, passed away now but his book is a good reference for home machinists, it's called The Model Engineers handbook. Keep up the good work Cheers

unless youre planning on using bigger change gears for the divider i would shorten the L piece so theres less space between the gear and the locking pin , the pin then has less room to flex making the whole setup more firmer should work fine though i bet with a lathe milling adapter on the crosside of a lathe you could use the same thing on that too and dont even need a milling machine (yeay you can shave the teeth in the gear with the crosslide and a toolbit but that gets old realy fast )

Hello! I used to see your videos pop up but no more . My motto is ( I’ve worked so long with so little I can now do anything with nothing at all ! Sad part is it’s pretty much true . Now I’m self employed and fix everything with little to nothing and get paid to come up with solutions, then apply it to the situation.

The manual for the Atlas machine states that climb milling shouldn't be done. Have you had any issues doing that? I'm about ready to start cutting my first gear. Can wait to get started.

Instead of your plywood dividing head and "eyeballing it", I've seen other youtubers use one of those USB microscopes to get more accurate results. They print up a dial with lines on it (just like your current plywood disk). Then, they point a USB microscope at it and show the results on a computer screen. This lets them really zoom in and get extremely accurate alignment for reproducible results. It is still not as accurate as a dividing head, but it is more accurate than trying to eyeball alignment of your disk with a metal square. For what it is worth, you can do basically the same thing with a magnifying eye loupe. Mount the eye loupe on a holder and position it so that it is right in front of your line and metal square. Then you can magnify the alignment of the line with the square to get better results. So imagine that you take your current system and look through a 10X magnifying glass (at a set viewing position). You would expect your error to drop by a factor of 10.

First of all great job,correct me if I’m wrong but if you’re making gears with the same spacing could you use the same 40 tooth gear to make whatever tooth gear you want as long as the diameter was correct for the new gear?

How did you lock the spindle for wooden template?
@ThunderDog
@ThunderDog 5 лет назад
The clamp piece seen at 4:38 locks the entire spindle and indexing template during cutting. The cap screw that attaches the wooden template directly into the back of the spindle(11:04) is all I needed to keep it from moving. Hope that answers the question. Thanks for watching.

What's the difference between a piece a 6 inch off cut from the bin and a 6 inch piece that you cut off your stock? None. None at all. I can't see anything wrong with those off cuts. He keeps saying that the build is bad because the metal is junk. If you slap something together then you end up packing it with bits of paper. If you square it up and take care with the build you will get a decent result. I've heard many workmen blame their tools. I've never heard someone call metal junk just because they didn't work it properly. Next time, square it all up before you start. He could have used the same metal and done a good job with it. You can build things at home that are spot on. There's nothing wrong with any of that metal.

Not optical illusion my @$$... Table feed was wrong direction for the direction of cutter. Probably to avoid chatter caused from slack &or flex in the divider, neat if it worked, could easily suck it under the cutter though considering the lack of strength in axis of cut... Box them sides in or cross brace it somehow.
