Making Methylamine 3 Ways

In this video I demonstrate three ways of making the incredibly commonplace (but fairly tough to buy) chemical methylamine.
I used the methylamine produced here to make a photographic developer called Metol, which I'll demonstrate in a future video.
There are numerous other methods of making methylamine and its salts, as it is the simplest primary amine and a simple byproduct of a multitude of biological and organic decompositions, but I believe these three methods to be the most useful.
This video was done on the behalf of several Patreon requests, and I am sorry it took so long. Hopefully it was worth the wait. Enjoy!
Since this is my longest video to date, I made numerous mistakes in my Narration. Many I caught during editing, but I'm sure you all will catch many more in the coming days.
So far it's been noted that:
At 2:22 methylene imine is being reduced and formaldehyde is oxidized. Not water.
Note that this video involves the use of dangerous chemicals, and generates toxic gases. Nothing seen here should be reproduced except by professionals or under professional supervision. Synthesis of this chemical may violate local law or ordinance depending on your country of residence, so always check before proceeding with any chemical procedure.
Also note that I will not now or ever be using this chemical to further manufacture any chemical that is illegal in any country, so do not ask.

5:50 Safety advise: I learned (during my vocational training almost 45 years ago) never-ever to set "normal" Erlenmeyer-flasks or other glassware with straight walls under vacuum due to the danger of an implosion. Only glassware with thick walls or roundbottom flasks should used for work involving vacuum. Before starting to work with vacuum, roundbottom flasks should be examined thoroughly for the absense of cracks. Btw: excellent work!
@integral_chemistry
@integral_chemistry 4 месяца назад
Thank you so much! And thank you as well for the advice. I've never read about implosion under vacuum, but I have enough experience that I had a gut feeling it was a possibility. So far I've avoided it by never pulling anything near a full vacuum and compensating with higher heat. My biggest implosion concern is always the liebig condenser.. the inner wall looks very thin, but I do feel the geometry of it makes it less likely to undergo implosion. What do you think? Is it mostly just a concern with erlenmeyer flasks?

@TankR 3 месяца назад
@@integral_chemistry borosilicate is a relatively brittle glass, it just has low thermal expansion so its a lot safer to use in the thermally rambunctious setting of a laboratory. Under vacuum the glass would mostly be under compression, ergo depending on the vacuum level I dont see it as being much of an issue (again depending on the depth of the vacuum. There is a reason near perfect vacuum chambers where you cant suck molecules out anymore you have to hit them with something (ie, those super freaking cool oil vapor pumps, Ben on Applied Science has a video of a fully glass one in operation. its amazing) are made out of thick metals. The atmosphere does not have a sense of humor....). That being said, Im not discounting the OPs experience in having glass implode under vacuum, just like with heat it can be hard to see the flaws that will make them fail. And I can absolutely see a regulator going screwy and pulling far too hard. Then all youd need is a cheap thin piece of glassware in the apparatus and its a afternoon of clean up, neutralizing, decontamination, and thinking up an excuse for the hospital burn ward (nosy bastards.....uh, or so ive been told). It sucks throwing away money like this, but take some time and test things to failure. If theyre only tested to some point, you have no idea how close that point is to the failure point. And besides, destruction makes for great (and informative) content ;) Be safe, mate! I want to see more awesome videos!

Yeah I've been good about not doing it for several months now so watching it back in editing physically hurt me. Not looking forward to how many times I'm gonna get called out on that 😅 But thank you! "Edgy synth presented educationally" is exactly what I was going for. I think it is a really cool process from a scientific perspective, and so I wanted to show it without risking any flak from RU-vid. I think it's delivery is so void of any drug glorification and dry enough that it should hold up. As a side note I've been sitting on synthesis vids for TNT, RDX, and acetone peroxide for ages for the same reason I sat on this video for ages.
@DangerousLab

@@integral_chemistry Don't worry about the thermometer-stirring, we have all been there. Those energetic material syntheses are as edgy if not more, it would be risky to be taken down somehow but that totally depends on the YT reviewer's decision (Which is rather inconsistent), I do think those rules are less strict than before as I can see some of those edgy videos resurfaced.

I just discovered this channel, but I regularly watch multiple other chemistry channels and I have to say that this one really stands out (from what I’ve seen so far) in terms of the pacing and level of detail/explanation. While I certainly enjoy the other chemistry channels I follow (I mean, obviously, because why else would I continue watching them?), each of them is just slightly off from what would be ideal for me in one or both of those aforementioned aspects - a bit too high-level, a tad more assumed knowledge than I possess, a beat slower or faster paced than my attention span and mental processing are equipped to handle, you get the idea. But this channel has been almost perfectly in-tune with my preferences on all counts. I’ve been able to follow along in real-time (i.e. without the need to frequently pause/rewind, or else fail to retain certain details) with full comprehension, and at the same time there has been very little of the unnecessary or redundant information (again, for my level of knowledge and comprehension) that typically causes my mind to wander. tl;dr - Cool channel bro.

I did 100% of synthesis #3 and portions of the first two under a fume hood, instead just feeding the gas outlet outside. Honestly should have all been done under a fume hood given the reactions going on are fairly complex and I'm not 100% certain on all potential byproducts. And yeah.. I only made it to make the photographic developer Metol, which is insanely overpriced so I thought this would pair well with my hobby photography. I'm having a tough time synthesizing the other requisite chemical (hydroquinone) in a pure enough state to actually use. TBH trimethylamine is much more useful than methylamine in the kind of projects I'm working on.

The wild part is this exact synthesis was the very first Hofmann rearrangement, and the one the entire mechanism was based on (although I might need to fact check that)

why is acetone and toluene on the list here in aus you can buy a 55 gallon drum of the stuff no questions asked
@integral_chemistry
@integral_chemistry 4 месяца назад
I've actually got no idea.. I know acetone because it's just such a broadly useful solvent and maybe that's true for toluene as well? I know you can use both to make other chemicals that are one step closer to controlled compounds, but you could apply that logic to literally anything. Styrofoam is just a few simple steps from multiple controlled compounds, easy enough for any graduate chemistry student. That's why the whole concept is preposterous for individuals in terms of the scope of what constitutes "precursor".

Kinda baffled that among other things, in controlled precursor list there's an ACETONE (one of the most ubiquitous solvents) and SULFURIC ACID (component of many products, not the least of which is automobile accumulator batteries.) At this point it's probably easier to ban chemistry altogether.
@integral_chemistry
@integral_chemistry 4 месяца назад
It is incredibly stupid.. I will say technically none are illegal to own, simply illegal to sell or make in excessively large quantities. The definition of "excessively large" also varies dramatically as 5kg of acetone is nothing while 5kg of methylamine might raise some eyebrows.. unless you had a legit use for it like if you owned a photography shop.

The patrons remembered that Jesse Pinkman was flown to Mexico to instruct in the P2P method, asks for methylamine to get started and is told by the up-staged head chemist that they synthesize their own and don't carry stock on hand. Which of these three methods should a high school chemistry flunky select when attempting to fool said chemist into believing he actually knows his chemistry? My guess, one of the first two methods... you seem to know what you are doing and the hexane rearranging threw you a little curve ball. 😆
