A behind-the-scenes look at the making of Missing in the Mansion. How we shot a film in Disneyland and brought the Hatbox Ghost to life. MissingintheMansion.com
the voice was corey burton who does alot of voice over work for the movies and shows and even the rides at disney. i believe that line was from the ride soundtrack although i wouldn't know that for sure since i've never been to disney or rode haunted mansion before, but i do know i recognize corey burton as the voice.
The shot of the guys holding up Lisa (Jess' actress) while she's being pulled from the ride, I didn't notice before, that there was another guy holding a fake tree branch over the actors that made it look like they were passing under the dead trees outside the Mansion as they descended from the attic to the back yard scene, and then comparing the behind the scenes shot to the shot that ended up in the movie. That was pretty cool, I like little touches like that. :D
Love the short!! I love "Guerilla Style" shooting! You guys did an awesome job!! I'm impressed! I don't subscribe to a lot of channels, but you guys are certainly entertaining!!! Paper plates for speakers... Lol!! Had me fooled! "Doom Buggy" very impressive! You guys are very creative! I really thought you had the help of a cast member in the park! Keep up the great work! I can't wait for you guys to make it to the big screen! Look out Coen Brothers... There's some new brothers in town!
I just wanted to say how awesome it was to see you guys use the "hatbox ghost." Probably not too many people know his history - you guys find a way to make the gag actually work on the ride! (Too bad about Jess, though). Excellent work. As a huge Disney/Disneyland and Haunted Mansion fan, this was GREAT.
I am a full on Disneyland addict... This ride is one of my favorites of all time. You have taken this to a whole new level :), amazing. Although I knew it was all acting, you had me creeped out :) ... Great job you guys!!! I will be looking at this ride in a whole new way when I visit again this July!
Excellent effects, genuine scares and creeps, and excellent acting all achieved on an absolutely negative budget. Proof that all you need is guts, grit, and a camera to make a good film.
No joke, this is a true story. When I first saw this back when it came out, I was in a big "Haunted Mansion Phase" and looked up everything I could about the ride, the history and all that. While researching the mansion, I came across that video. Now, I was 9 at the time, so I was very gullible. I got scared out of my mind after watching that video, and I didn't stop believing that it was real for a while. The summer of 2013 came, and we took a trip to Disney World. I was very conflicted, I wanted to go on the ride, and I didn't at the same time. By the time we got out of the elevator, I was in tears and we went out of a secret exit. I randomly thought of that video today, and found this. Thanks for making me too scared to ride that ride. No bad feelings towards you though lol!
Hey man, don't feel bad, I, too, have an interesting story for my first encounter with a found footage style scary movie. LOL I was 19 at the time, so back in 2009, and long story short, I was going through a lot of family troubles at home, which sent me into a kind of semi-nervous breakdown for a while, and thus lowered some of my simplest and most common mental and emotional defenses. I saw another scary movie at the time, and it scared me to death; as in, I couldn't go to sleep without a light on for the next 4 or 5 months, it was bad. And until that point, I don't think any other movie scared me that bad! XD And then, I found cure for this crippling phobia from the most unlikely source: another scary movie! My friend I've known since high school wanted to see the first Paranormal Activity movie when it came out in Halloween of 2009, and I know I heard people comparing it to The Blair Witch Project, another well known found footage scary movie, but I hadn't seen it (I still haven't, but I'm okay with that), so I didn't really know what I was getting into. So off we went to see the movie. For some reason, I was convinced that all of that movie was real, and some of the scariest parts of that movie, which only would have normally gotten a few chills out of me and some commentary on how impressive the effects were, instead terrified me! I was actually very scared and angry at the demon in that movie for what it was doing to those poor people...and then, the end of the movie came, and in rolled the credits. I thought, what?!? It was actually a movie? I was scared of THAT the whole time?! It also helped that my friend was kinda keeping the illusion going for a little while, in her own way, but she only meant it in all good fun, and it actually had really great results! So, just like that, voila, I was cured of that fear I had, and it never came back! ;) In fact, my friend and I ended up liking Paranormal Activity so much that we made it a tradition to go back to the movies and see its sequels whenever they came out, and once we were in the theater, we poked fun at each other for what happened the first time around. XD And ever since then, it's been a hilarious story to tell. :P So yeah, don't feel bad, if I was as young as you were at the time you saw "Missing in the Mansion," I'd probably react a lot of the same way. :D I do hope, though, that you got to ride the Haunted Mansion again at some point? Or if you haven't, you think you will again? :)
I'm a former cast member who has ridden Haunted Mansion at WDW a thousand times and this fooled me with the doombuggy chair. very well done! The sound effects and Hatbox Ghost were awesome!
Amazing job guys! I was amazed the first time I saw this short, and it's still one of my favorites! I hope you plan on doing some more shorts with some of the other attractions.
I wouldn't be surprised if somebody from Disney stumbled upon this and wanted to incorporate it into a once a month or once a year thing! I mean they do stuff for Halloween i am sure but this is fantastic! Next time I will have a whole new respect for how scary the haunted mansion really is!
Oh my gosh!!! You guys did amazing!!!! I love the story of Joshua and the Hatbox ghost!!!! Thank you for doing this COMPLETLY AWESOME tribute to my resting place... Sincerely, TheDarkRideBoy
I gotta be honest, I actually was convinced that this was real, and since there are a lot of these rumors at Disneyland I was curious about this, so it was convincing until the Hatbox ghost then I started to catch on. And also you guys said "Low Budget " no, that looked pretty professional to me.
Well as the Disney Parks Blog said "the hatbox ghost is reappearing so he was always there so I watched this after they announced that the hatbox ghost is reappearing so I really thought it was real
OK. Now I think I can go back on the ride again! I was really freaked out when I first saw it. Amazing acting! Unbelievable filming! You guys are going to go far in the industry! Will be following you to see what you do next! Good luck!!
Honestly the best video I have ever seen. I have a huge love for haunted mansion and all of the creepy myths surrounding it, so this was incredibly awesome & I was sincerely scared. Bringing in the hatbox ghost was just the icing on the cake. Thanks for creating this & sharing it with the world.
I’m gonna say it: this Hatbox Ghost looks VASTLY better than Jared Leto’s. It’s not a dig at Leto, but the fact that they could have EASILY used makeup to transform him, but used CGI. I also love the costume here. Y’all somehow did better at designing a well established character than a multi billion dollar company. Kudos.
I just want to say that was a really cool film to watch! it really was well made and the planning that went into it paid off. The 'making of' was just as entertaining, thanks guys for producing a top vid! :)
I LOVE the haunted mansion and the story of the hatbox ghost and when I watched this I was so happy of the outcome! You guys did amazing and the actors were fantastic! Have you thought about doing more "Disney" short films?
this short movie was amazing! I'll be visiting Disney in a couple weeks and am sure I will be thinking of your short as I take a ride in my doom-buggie in the Haunted Mansion!
The cast members are great at playing their roles...they are supposed to react to situations pertaining to the role they play, and Joan did a great job...go on some of these rides where it is a horror setting and have fun with the cast members...it is a riot.
That's great! Awesome job guys, I hope you will make another short movie disney related because Missing in the Mansion is wonderful. Tower of Terror maybe? There was a nice movie about it but it became old now.
The woman who plays Jess is not only cute as a button, but she is quite the actress. The way she reacted during the proposal and when the camera sneaked up on her was so natural that I thought you were shooting a real proposal and had just worked it into your guerilla film.
Yeah, they did a pretty good job with everything, the ghosts were very impressive as well. I like how there were other people at the park in front of the castle and they clapped when they saw the "proposal." LOL
+Matthew Krause I'm a female and even I thought she was adorable! But that's besides the point. It did look like a real proposal, and they are REALLY good actors/actresses. This short film was something that, if you're in Disney, or were in Disney, you DON'T wanna cross that ride again. We went on that ride this year, and it was AWESOME. Until I saw this video.
wow great job you guys one of the best short films ever wow this was really well done you guys had me screaming like a girl lol one of the best low budget films ever can't to see what you guys make next
'Missing' was fantastic. Loved it. Can't wait to see the next mini-epic, if you guys do another. Disneyland is what drew me in, but I understand it's probably a one time trick, right?
Digital compositing, they basically took the box part of the hatbox and overlaid footage of the head on top of it during editing. Like there's a few tweaks and such but that's basically how they did it.
Great Video!! I was so scared watching the video, even though I knew it was fake! You guys are really good!!!! I had to favorite it : ) I will send this on to anyone I think would like it!!
Good job guys. I happened to see "Missing in the Mansion" through StumbleUpon. I'm glad you also posted, "How it was Done." Amazing what you can do with a little imagination and paper plates. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to MORE from ya all. Anything brewing? Let me know please.
Just found this today! Great job! I have a friend who claims she wants to live at the Haunted Mansion. I've shared it with her to see if it changes her mind!
