coo project, I can imagine sitting around a fire in the old days just cutting out the hide and making these raw. Nothing else to do all day but survive. No taxes, no bills, no drama. Just enoying Gods bounty and enjoying life.

Love hearing the rain!

Hey Justin! Those cloudscapes in your opening shots were just stunning! There is NOTHING in the world like the sound of rain on a tin roof! It is just so relaxing! (You may have to make a hour long CD recording of it... and market it as a "Relaxation/Background" CD! Mississippi Rain comes to mind for a Title.) Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Those were some FINE looking moccasins you got from the kit! The fact that the finished ones fit is even better! By the time you apply some waterproofing oil on 'em, they will fit even better! With time & use the leather will conform to your foot. Tracing the pattern pieces for them will serve you well in the future... so hang on to the instructions as well. I would recommend that for future ones, you make the soles out of Elk or Moose, since they are thicker than Deer and will hold up better. There are historical accounts of Warriors taking as many as 12 to 15 pair along with them when on the Warpath. There are Sheepskin liners available from Amazon if you want another layer between you and the ground. You can also make moccasins out of wool blanketing for wearing around camp or for additional layering in a "Winter Moccasin"! Well Done!

This leather craft project was a good way to pass some time productively during a rain shower. Building your first pair of moccasins from a kit offered the advantage of having all the leather parts and pieces precut so that you could copy a pattern for other similar projects. I would think that the moccasins you made will stretch a little bit and mold more to your feet. It would be good to do a follow up video at some point on these shoes so that we can get an idea of how they hold up. Thanks

Hey Justin Amazon has mocc kits of all styles and also patterns. Poster board from the dollar store makes great patterns. Hair on back skins are hard in summer but buckskins not so bad. Scrape em and rack em and let em dry. Then shave the hair from the rawhide working the grain off as well. Then cut em loose and tan, wring and leave in the brains or egg yolk overnight. Wring well and start breaking as usual. Finally smoke em. I've slipped hair with hydrated lime and hardwood ashes but am convinced, shaving down the hair and grain makes a softer buckskin.

Thanks for sharing your project with us. I have been wanting a pattern for moccasins, for some leather I cut out of an old couch. I'm going to look for moccasin kits or draw my own pattern. The rain and rooster sound awesome. Have a great weekend😀

I made my two mean granddaughters a pair of them style moccasins. They seem to be the same pattern. I saved the pattern and traced it on waxed paper to use on the leather, since you can dampen your next leather and lay the wax side down and run a stylus over the lines on the pattern and make indents for the holes. You can see through the paper to keep the pattern on the leather where you want and the waxed paper can deal with the damp leather. The leather takes the lines a lot better if you dampen it first. I think that makes it easier to keep all the holes lined up than if I have a pattern that is cut to size, since I have a tendency to let the pattern slightly shift when I am drawing it on the leather with the stylus on wet leather or a pencil on dry. The baby moccasin instructions said to sew one clockwise and the other counterclockwise. That made a left and right shoe out of a neutral pattern. I don't remember which was which, but I saved the directions, and since I traced the pattern on the wax paper, I still should have a "new" pattern that I could size up or down and it's not cut up or have a bunch of holes jobbed in the pattern. I never have upsized the pattern to Old Geezer Size, but I like to tell myself that I COULD upsize them baby shoes to fit Pawpaw... That rain on that tin sounds fine, don't it?

Hey Justin: I may be wrong, but I think those "ends" you have left from lacing the side caps are supposed to go through the fringed tongue tab and get tied like laces on your shoes? Just my thoughts. Good looking mocs. NOW you're into MY kind of videos. :~))) God bless: Two Feathers
