Hello Laura, Your pottery is absolutely lovely. I am astonished to see how you approach hand building and texture. I have worked in pottery for over 25 years (throwing and hand building). I agree that nature-based texture enlightens our senses. You have inspired me to experiment with natural textures again. Thank you for sharing. -D

Thank you! Play around with different clays with varying amounts of grog, also experiment with how dry the clay is when you add texture. Have fun! ❤️

Laura, I'm kind of saying that my heart and love is in the same space as yours with the earth's textures - stone, rock, sediment, foliage...its all there in my heart and soul. I wish my pottery could be as suggestive of these things as yours is. I guess its practice, practice and looking at my surroundings - not as lucky to be in Japan as you are but I'm quite very happy in my home surroundings in New Jersey, USA. Thank you for this video its very inspirational.

Thank you Marie! I think we can be inspired by nature in different ways. Clay is a natural material and I think a lot of pottery in Japan allows the clay speak and maintain its naturalistic state. I am quite new to pottery so still experimenting and taking things in around me. Thank you for your kind words and support!

I just visited Japan a few weeks ago and fell in love with the scenery and natural elements that surround the bustling city life. Luckily enough, I live in WA state and the climate and foliage/greenery are comparable. The Ashikaga Flower Garden is absolutely gorgeous and I'm planning on returning next April to see the wisteria trees in full bloom. Your work is stunning and very inspiring! I hope I can see some of your work in person when I visit Japan again.

I’m glad you enjoyed your trip! Japan feels like a tropical jungle to me coming from the UK. It is very beautiful. It feels like every week new wild plants pop up in my area. It is very inspiring for me. I hope you make it back next year. Thank you for reaching out and your kind words.

Can you please share the name of glazes and where to buy them? or the recipe if its your own glaze? thanks much, your work is beautiful!!

I source my glazes from various companies in Japan. If you search for Kuan (Guan) Ice Crackle on glazy this would give a similar effect to the glaze seen on these mugs. The thicker the application the deeper and larger the crackle effect. I apply my glaze sparingly by hand so it creates more of a clear glaze in places and pools with crackle in others. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions. X
