I believe it was gold! In New Orleans, it was told to by my parents that traditionally we would get Mardi Gras king cake on kings day “while they don’t put the plastic baby in the king cake anymore due to some children choking” they would put the baby in the king cake and traditionally, whoever got the plastic baby had to buy the next king cake.
@Eloiselove

Try it with coconut creme or coconut milk sometime. You'll love it! Amazing how similar we do and make things across the Caribbean . I still eat it in a circle just like you do, thanks to my Mom. 😂 This was cool to watch. .... Oh and it was gold frankincense and myrrh but fun fact : the Bible never said their were 3 wise men. It just says they brought these 3 gifts so we kinda just filled in the gap I guess and assumed there were 3 men. Lol. Matthew chapter 2 for reference. . All this time I thought the bible says " The Wise men" Never thought of that till in my 30's. Love discovering new things in the Bible. Have a Great Year everyone!

We have the same maize meal porridge as a staple in most cultures in South Africa🇿🇦🇿🇦. Difference is that the sugar is poured by preference after, same as butter, milk or whatever flavouring is optional. The porridge is the maize meal, water and salt for taste. The Xhosa people even have a sour porridge version which is a bit of vinegar for the sour taste during the cooking.

Dang the whole time growing up around puerto ricans in NYC i never even knew y’all ate cornmeal porridge as well. As a Jamaican its a staple- we add coconut milk and condensed milk and nutmeg in ours. **Quick tip: if you accidentally get lumps just pull out your blender and use it. It’ll be smooth again lol I’ve made the same mistake a couple times no matter how many times I’ve made it..im just too impatient sometimes 😂

It's so crazy to me that this is cornmeal porridge. I'm also from the the Commonwealth of Dominica and Antigua and like the rest of my small islanders we just call it cornmeal porridge. For most of us we definitely don't consider it comfort food in fact I think alot of us hated it growing up because our grandparents especially made it wayyyyyy to often. In our house we used vanilla and almond essence, condensed and evaporated milk, nutmeg,bay leaves and cinnamon(spice). It's good to learn that though we are so different we are so alike.
