Hey guys, I have learned how to make my own sinkers now like a really real dude...lol. Thanks for watching. Steve Douglas the Cat Fish Dude: / akwalung Link to sinker mold: ( I am not associated with Bottom Dwellers) bottomdwellerst...
I am an advocate of anything that prevents pouring money back into the corporations. Anything we can do for ourselves, makes us more free and independent. Go you!
I will second that. Yea sinkers are expensive around my place. I have not made it to making sinkers but I do make my own plastic bait. You can check them out here. facebook.com/bigfootbaitcompany/
Oh yeah got the same mold, pored my first today ,had trouble with copper wire i guess it was too soft so used coat hanger wire ,but still had a tough time ,will try the bees wax with it next time as i read in the comments, watched Steve Douglas doing this, i don't suppose there is anybody out there that is more helpful than Steve, great guy. Any thing we can do on our own is a credit to God and not China, fish deep buddy.....................
Good video my man. I just started making my own weight too. Steve is a good dude. I got to meet him last year in Louisville Kentucky at the catfish conference it was a good time. Lots of good people
The manufacturer's instructions actually say to oil the core pins, and to pull the core pins from the filled mould before dumping the sinkers out. I just did my No-Roll sinkers that way. Worked great. Very easy to pull the core pins. And the mould stays hot, which produces better sinkers and fewer rejects.
i used to make sinkers with my dad years ago and enjoyed it a about 5 years ago i made a weight for a high powered AR rifle that fit in the but compartment to reduce recoil made a wax cast of the compartment then used it to form a sand mold then pored my lead in it. it worked like a charm and really helped with the recoil I really like your videos.
we used to make sinkers out of potatoes yrs ago, cut in half, use a small spoon to carve out wat size you want, let the potato dry, then fill with lead
As an expert...😁 We have skimmed alot of crap outta dirty lead. Also use a spigot style leadpot for final pours. WD40 is used to coat the inside of molds for easier dumps. Got everything from jig molds to snapshots. Prefer tiny to 3oz. Eggs. 400 + lbs of 1/2 inch biscuitpan ingots in stock.😁 Just thinka the $ you save at the tackle store😊
Get ya some WD40 and a rag. Lay your pins on the rag and give them a quick spray. Then cast your sinker. Now pull the pins out before you open the mold. Hold the handles and bring the hinge portion up under your bench to pull against. Put the pins on the rag and repeat the process. Another trick, open your mold over a bucket of water. It cools the lead in a few seconds. Then when your finished pouring for the day, clean the flash off of cool lead with more comfortable gloves. Also lube the hinge point of the mold with WD40 about every 10 pours. Love your videos. Hope this helps you and everyone else out there.
You probably have already heard this but if you use a candle and smoke the mold the lead will release easier. I learned that when pouring leadhead jigs for Mann's Bait Company many many years ago.
Those 3oz stinkers are 88 cents at local bait shop here in Lansing Michigan. At Wal-Mart they're 1.99 for 2. This is a great idea for avid catfishers. Great video!!
It looked like it was working great. I was wondering if you could pull the wire out with the mold still closed. That way you wouldn't have to hang on to the HOT sinker. But it might make it harder to knock the sinker out of the mold. Don't know but might try then use the sprue to pull the sinker out of the mold. I have a couple molds to make those led head jugs. They tell what hooks to use then pour the lead in. Then I guess you would get the paint and dip them in. If you made a rack just hook the hooks over it to let the paint dry. If you want to try them out I'll send them to you. I have never used them. Got them at a garage sale several years ago. They look like they may have been made by the same company as the mold you have.
I've been casting the 8 and 10 ounce weights. I have a lot of lead shot left over from my bird hunting and target shooting days. It's hard lead but fine for sinkers. If your casting bullets then go buy pure plumbers Lead! I'm going to try the soot idea, thanks for the heads up!
try putting just a 1/4 teaspoon of bees wax in the lead. I use it when making bullets for my black powder gun ! they come out of the mold easy , smooth and shiny !
I make my own sinkers also,I have a bottom pour lee lead pot ,but I will say that little lead pot you are using is very cool,I've never seen those before.
Try holding a burning candle under the upsidedwn and blacken each cavity. That pputs a carbon coating on the old giving you a much better finish, If you can get soft lead it works betteer
Looks good RD. I have the same mold, and made up 45 weights in no time at all. Tight Lines, Bro. And, I pull the wire before I take the weights from the mold
I used to make a few different types for a local tackle shop and for my own use. I found it fun and saves a lot of money if you go through lots of tackle. If you do this much you'll want to invest in a respirator with the proper cartridges. If it's just a once a year thing, outside with a fan should be fine unless you're young, having kids or a child bearing age female etc. Also any equipment you use like gloves, pans, utensils and such should be labeled permanently for lead use only and obviously wash yourself thoroughly after. Lead isn't quite the deadly poison it's made out to be but it is quite toxic in certain circumstances especially to children. Just use precautions and common sense and have fun.
You probably already know it, but if you know of a factory that makes windows with diamond lead patterns on them, they will always have short offcuts of lead strip. I did that job years ago, we used to get an oil drum full every few weeks
your lucky John, I can't use lead sinkers up here in Maine anymore, they outlawed it a few years back. well let me rephrase that if you use lead sinkers they have to be at least 2.5 inches long or at least an ounce or more, I know big river fishing you usually have larger sinkers, but for the small rivers and lighter tackle A 1ounce sinker is way too much, anyway enuff of my racket jawing nice video have a great day
While I do plan to get a mold and a lead pot at some point,I'm in no good position to work with that material at this time,so can you come up with some form of quick and dirty sinker that does not need lead?improvised sinkers for lack of terms
Its easier if you pull the pin before you open the mold that way your not picking up a hot sinker pour mold cool then clean and after a while the mold will get hard to open so spray it with some wd 40 or something then your good to go for some more
My father was an avid Ohio river fisherman, he used those cloth bags that Bull Durham tobacco came in to put whatever amount of river sand into and tied them on his line as sinkers, but I haven't seen that type of rolling tobacco in several years, not sure that the tobacco company is still in business or not
Just made my first ones today John. Same set up but I was making disc sinkers. Turned out pretty good. You got any tips for cleaning the pot out or do you just leave that little film of lead in there
What keeps the holes from having sharp edges that could possibly cut the line? Do you have to clean them up or files the edges of the holes down afterwards?
Hey buddy is everything ok?? I haven’t seen any of your cool videos for quite a while!!! Let me no if you’re still making videos or not and still alive buddy!! I definitely miss watching your videos!!
Put the pins in with the hook end at the bottom. This way, you can pull out the pin without the lead flash getting in the way, and then nip off the flash. for a clean sinker. By the way, I subscribe to your other channel 'jnull0'.
I actually did my first ever lead sinker molds this fall myself, yes, it is little overwhelming to start, but it comes quick with some You Tube videos. Does the store you sell frozen bait to, sell over the internet?
Don't buy the stuff from bass pro molds are $50 a pop find cheaper price they are in $20 to $35 range other spots. Find a scrap yard to buy lead its .80 cents lb I buy my molds from a local mom and pop place they do online sales. Barlows tackle in Dallas tx.
