The Martin Scorsese re-make was more stylized and DeNiro was outstanding, however, the original Cape Fear was more suspenseful, largely because of the dynamic between Peck and Mitchum; Mitchum was genuinely menacing and physically imposing in the 1962 film. He was an extremely underrated actor and a literate man.
Whenever I saw Robert Mitchum on any photos or evern read his name,this film popped up in my head and that feelings I had,when I watched Cape of Fear .I was very young and he really made me feel so scared that I never forget this movie
Ditto for me except it was Mitchum in Night Of The Hunter that freaked me out when I was 8 or 9, even though I loved it. I did not see Cape Fear until I was about 16. Love it as well but I was old enough then to handle it better.
Robert Mitchum was utterly excellent in this. He just takes over this picture. One of the most memorable bad guys in modern film history. The scene where Cady attacks Bergen was improvised.
A great movie. You couldn't tell this story any better and Mitchum was well, just MItchum. Re-making this movie was about as dumb a thing to do as re-making Psycho.
Something about this movie makes me want to read Nietzsche. Oh yeah, in the 1992 version look at DeNiro's bookshelf when he's in prison. He fancied himself a Nietzsche Superman.
Undoubtedly! The original is dripping with menace. The remake is embarrassingly heavy-handed which really surprised me given the fact that arguably the best living director and actor were making it.

Great film...It was on late night tv a lot in the sixties....not to be missed...I found the Scorsese remake to be way over-the-top, thus losing a lot of the effectiveness of the original...just my opinion of course...
(Unpopular opinion) But I perfer the Scorsese remake more. This one, while still amazingly acted and directed, seems a little too much like Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Scorsese’s film was more stylized in its thrills and (which is very uncommon for remakes) it was its own thing and didn’t have to call back to the original. And De Niro’s Cady was more psychotic and demented and came off as much more of a threat.
Scorsese's film was just all over the place. I felt I was watching a bad imitation of a De Palma film instead of an earnest homage to Hitchcock. As for De Niro, nothing about his Cady wrang true; a new york actor playing a psychotic hill billy.
I just rewatched both of them. I actually think Mitchum's Cady was more ominous, more scary. I like Deniro as an actor but his accent was too over the top and he seemed clownish in the remake. You are never sure exactly what Cady did to the girl in the first movie but you knew it was bad. Deniro biting off a piece the girls face just seemed like horror movie fare, it didn't ring true. Also, I know I'm not alone in thinking that hiding under the car wasn't very likely. This was a story of psychological suspense and the first movie nailed it. I don't think the second movie did. I remember seeing the first one when I was a kid and being very afraid and it is one of those that stick with you. And speaking of Psycho, when Deniro impersonated the maid, I thought of that movie. Not so the original movie.
Bingo! I have no idea what Scorsese was trying to do here and he is one of my favorite directors of all time. The only way it could have been worse is if he had added Leo. 😉
