The city was built in 1960 to replace Karachi as the Pakistani capital, which it has been since 1963. Due to Islamabad's proximity to Rawalpindi, they are considered sister cities. Compared to other cities of the country, Islamabad is a clean, spacious and quiet city with lots of greeneries.

Pakistan had zero loan before 1961. The first loan was taken by Ayub Khan’s government for the construction of Islamabad Project. Ever since all government continue taking the loan and today Pakistan is barely saved from default.

The building of islamabad started in 1962. Before that time in 1960 pakistan was regarded the third largest economy. Even pakistan government gave loan to germany with the amount of 120 US dollars. So it is completely impossible for pakistan to make dams or construct the capital city islamabad by taking loans.

I still do not understand why so much money was spent to develop a new city? They should have transferred capital to Rawalpindi and developed it instead of developing a new city. There are only two cities in the world - washington DC and Islamabad that were developed as capitals. Pakistan spent so much money to develop this brand new city, must be one of the nasty and megalomaniac decisions of Ayub Khan

Maybe because it would've taken way too long to destroy already existing buildings in rawalpindi and to reimburse the people that were dislocated if rawalpindi was built as a capital
