@@aliababwa3866 Nah, they left out a bunch of things he said. "I didn't watch movies or listen to different sounds for the inspiration." "I just played the guitar in order to create the sounds that I wanted to make" "Until I was satisfied with the finished product, I took my time to create the sounds" "In terms of the theme song, it took me 3 days of just constantly playing the guitar to compose it"
The reason I still come back to this game is because it literally is the definition of art it reaches to the point where it no longer is a game nor a story. It's a pure masterpiece
I was always more of a RE fan, with Silent Hill taking a back seat, but even I cannot deny the brilliance of this game. Without exaggeration or hyperbole, one of the greatest video games ever made
Fun fact: This making of, just like the one of Silent Hill 3, was created by the French radio channel "Fun TV", which is why it also exists with a French narrator. But more relevantly, the French version of this making is slightly longer, containing a few parts that were removed from the English version. Among them, there are parts of the interviews where the developer mention other game franchises, namely Final Fantasy and Resident Evil: - When Mr.Sato explains that he purposely created imperfections on Maria's face and why he did that, he originally explains that the characters of Final Fantasy are too perfect, and that he thinks he created something more realistic. - When Akira Yamaoka talks about the unique sound effects he wanted to create for SH2, the French version contains this additional line from him: "I think the sounds of Resident Evil are kinda conventional. I would almost say that our ears are used to it." That's why he explains how he wanted to create something more unique. - Also, the French subs have a funny moment in the parts with Akira Yamaoka. After translating what he says, at some point, the subtitles add this: "Here, Akira is only finishing his sentence. But since it's in Japanese, it is very long... So we're keeping you busy in the meantime. Thank you for your comprehension." There are a couple of other things I forgot No big deal, but I thought it was fun to share this with English-speaking Silent Hill fans. :)
+Sebastian Thought exactly the same thing when it got to that part. The irony is so steep. What a tarnishing embarrassment that mistake of an HD collection was.
It was a lot better on PlayStation 3 after they fixed all the bugs. But I don't think they fixed the bugs on the 360 version. I haven't played the 360 version in a while.
@@gravesbroderick928 God no, in fact there's a few videos by Twin Perfect, each very long, that detail the vast scale of *how badly* Hijinx fucked up the HD collection
I remember I got the silent hill 2 directors cut when I was 11 years old. It came with the making of cd. I remember going out of the bathroom then getting to the beginning of the path leading to silent hill. I got a few steps down the path and then I began to hear the rustling sounds coming from the bushes and I instantly got freaked out and turned the game off. I watched the making of the game countless times until I finally grew the courage to play it again. To this day its still the greatest game ive ever experienced.
I can relate! I also got it when I was 11 and was too afraid to play it but I was ridiculously curious about the game. There was a kid in my class who beat it and I would pester him relentlessly for ever tiny detail about the game lol
The path through the forest definitely scared the hell out of me too. I barely managed to push on to get the radio and plank, but the apartments made me freeze in my tracks. It took a long time to finally move on past that first "dungeon." What a fantastic work of art.
nickranzeru Each places have their histroy wrtten in their walls with the old and desolated look they have. That's why Silent Hill is always the main character of the games.
can u explain me why this shieety game is so overated ? shieet graphics, bored gameplay, walking simulator, and THIS IS NOT SCARYY !!! NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BE SCARY
petros tsekak you must born in 1990+ to know why, in that time when the graphic aren't so good, beautiful the story and physiological horror + no cheap jump scare, with good theme : deep depression witch it could happen in real life.. **spoiler** just imagine you kill your own wife because of it you must face the judgement, and the journey on this town depending of your choose, it will give your result and no good ending at all..
I really like the narrator. He seems like he's actually really interested in the game. Some real love and thought went into this "Making Of" which is good, because a LOT went into SH2.
" Above all I want to make sure that people feel something listening to my music." Damn right he did, at the point where Silent Hill without Akira's music doesn't feel like Silent Hill *cough* downpour *cough*
Silent Hill 2 is one of the best games ever and one of my favorite game ever. This game is just pure art. The whole staff that worked on SH 2 are all talented. These guys are geniuses, they were far ahead for their time. I still can't believe this game came out 14 years ago!! A masterpiece in story telling.
+John Perkins They certainly don't make horror games like this anymore, too much reliance on jump scares rather than scaring the player by making them think.
I always come back to this, to get re-inspired. An experience like SH2 only comes ever so often...when the right team of the right creative minds come together to produce something unforgettable.
The FMVs are so masterfully crafted in this game, I hadn't seen more believable human CG animations until many years later. There is almost no uncanny valley with the facial animations, and when there is I think it's intentional (Eddie going crazy). To think this is achieved with no mocap, it's amazing. It's too bad they never talked about Laura in this making of. Laura does come off as an annoying brat at first, but as you learn more about her situation she gets easy to sympathize with.
I remember being torn apart when Maria "died" at the end of the hallway. And then the music that played while digesting what just happened, alone in the elevator! This game is truly a Masterpiece.
Me too i was shocked that i didn't even get sad for her i was biased to Mary and James side lol which made me annoyed by the idea that Maria is trying to be in James side even when he was still looking for Mary not remembering the past but after finishing the game Maria was an amazing character but i hated her in all the endings because she wants what is not hers.
The prison scene is arguably the best scene ever produced by humanity. The whirlwind of emotions and confusion can't be compared. I seriously get chills each time I see it to this day.
Bravest Epoch I was always on edge in that one room/hallway, the one with all the screaming and shrieking. Silent Hill 2 effectively scared me senseless without the cheap use of jumpscares
Take a good long look, ladies and gentlemen. Everything you see in this documentary has been lost. The code, the sights, the sounds... hell, even the people being interviewed to a certain extent, are all gone. And that just breaks my heart.
yeah fuck konami it's like throwing away their prize possession if only konami didn't kicked team silent we would be having probably another good silent hill game sequels
@@ScoutJoe Let's not give Team Silent too much credit here: Silent Hill 1 and 3 sucked. The story is completely incoherent and, quite frankly, just really cringe to see, much less hear acted out. Silent Hill 2 is great because it stands on its own - there's no need for any foreknowledge of Silent Hill, the cult, etc. It's just a man struggling through a nightmare of his own making.
I don't know why everyone only talks about P.T and Kojima, these guys were the ones who made Silent Hill famous. I wish they reunite again for christ sake.
This ooozes early 2000s Y2K VHS documentary vibe to me. The calming british narrator. The calm drum and bass music. The soft rock. The game OST music. The genuine questions and answers and total passion from the devs. Everything about this documentary is great. Are there any more like it?
The happiest day of my life would be when the whole team of Silent gets together again to create a traditional SH game. It has to follow the first three games. I have had some hope when Kojima announced Silent Hills. Maybe he wouldn't capture the true spirit of original SH games, but he would create a perfect story hat fits the universe of sh... Too sad the greediness of Konami's CEO cancelled the game. But one maybe day. Maybe...
+Mobtaker SA What do you mean the "whole" team "again?" Team Silent were never all together because some came later while others were absent throughout making the games. And considering their last game (SH4), it's clear they want to go in a different direction and fans were prissy about it. It's best to appreciate what they gave and move on 'cause even Silent Hills proved different doesn't always equal bad.
There's a leak that says we're getting two new games probably around the time the next gen consoles launch. So we may see something at E3 this year. Apparently the guy is a very reliable leaker and has been johnny on the spot. He leaked games in the Resident Evil series and was right every time. With there being another rumor a little over a month ago regarding the future of Silent Hill, it seems like it just might happen. That's what I'm hoping for, but for now we wait.
@@andrewhare5482 I'm just curious if whatever team Konami assigns to make the game will truly understand what Silent Hill is about. I'm not quite sure that I understand it myself, but I do know that it's less gameplay related and more story/atmosphere/symbolism related. I'm happy to get anything rather than nothing, but we'll just have to wait and see.
Sato explaining why he didn't want to use motion capture just goes to show how much passion he had for this game. He could have easily cut corners and used mo cap but he didn't feel it would capture everything he wanted. It's a shame not all game devs still have this kind of passion for creating games these days.
An absolute masterpiece, unmatched to this day. They poured so much love into this game and the results speak for themselves. I feel like every young gamer needs to play this game to understand what a great game should be.
The amount of care and intelligence that went into creating this masterpiece of a game is unheard off nowadays. Story, characters, atmosphere and music are second to none and trumps every game artistically speaking in my opinion. Brilliant upload for a brilliant game. Thanks!!
It's so amazing that these designers were sooo young by the time they created such an incredible masterpiece that had so much careful thought put into it!! most look to be in their early 20s. Dang, Konami was such a different place back them. And to think all that amazing talent was put to work into mobile games a few years later is so heartbreaking. I wonder what they are working with nowadays.
***** They need a company willing to invest in them that's also willing to allow them 100% freedom in creating the product without any focus at all on making a 'typical popular' game for the idiots who need to be told where to go next.
Well Masahiro Ito is a serious artist with work in galleries and has plenty of illustration work under his belt. From what I can see, he's doing exactly what he wants to be doing, I'm sure he's fine. I'm pretty sure Yamaoko is doing well too.
Still, so many years later, this game blows my mind. Pure artists creating pure art. You can hear it in the way they talk, they are passionate about the feeling they want you to feel. The key point that every non Team Silent, Silent Hill developer onwards does not inhabit.
I grew up with Resident Evil games, first Silent Hill i played was Homecoming in 2008, but damn, i have to admit it. Silent Hill 2 is the greatest horror game ever made.Way better than RE 1,2 and 3, which are the most loved ones. My God, i wish RE and Silent Hill franchises never ends. Best franchises ever made alongside GTA. Pleaseee make Silent Hills PT happen!!!!!!!
Damn god, I miss Team Silent so much the effort they put in to their work is kinda unmatched and i'm pretty sad about that "Horror" Games go the Action way and arent even disturbing anymore Yes i know Amnesia and i see Evil Within but for gods sake they arent compareable to Silent Hill 1-3 its just like that a enemy spots you and you got to run but in the end there's no Impact on a storyline Cheers to Team Silent for such Masterpieces
Four years after this video was made, the master copy of Silent Hill 2, and all of its assets, were accidentally thrown away after a wild night of binge drinking, stuffed crust pizzas, Rumble Roses tournaments, and fornication with felines at the KCET offices. RIP Silent Hill 2. You were too beautiful for this world.
You can't just say that without explaining why. Akira Yamaoka is an incredible composer for these games. The ambient is very relaxing and deep. Gameplay-wise the old Resident Evil games are far superior.
***** The story? well, not all Silent Hill games are that great. In the third game you just wake up all the time. The Room was really cool but generally there's not enough guns for my taste. The games are more psychotic than scary! The Project Zero/Fatal Frame games are SCARY!
Silent Hill 2 will always have a special place in my heart - was a gaming experience I'll never forget and even today - like 15+ years later I still think about it. I hope one day silent hill comes back - revamped or reimagined for current gen platforms 🙌
Team Silent, your work will never be forgotten. We won't let this disaster of a "remake" tarnish the legacy of one of the greatest Horror Games ever made.
I never thought SH2 had that good of graphics, but to this day in this PS4 era I still think SH3 has some really fucking pretty graphics. I still think it looks better than both Home coming and Downpour
Jason Bissainthe Right term! Graphics Fidelity != Good Art Direction. Nowadays games are almost like movies but they don't express any kind of art emotion or art style. Good point Jason!
+FelpHero SH 3 is certainly the strongest in the beautiful art direction and how it holds up. But SH2 is also incredible. The outdoor areas weren't as sharp, but all the indoor claustrophobic environments hold up amazingly well. The PC version, with maxed out resolution allows you to see the insane amount of detail that went into making each room, hallway, floor, wall...in the game. Truly impressive and astounding how good it looks considering it came out nearly 15 years ago. It manages to put all the other newer SH games to shame, which is a testament to the level of work and artistic drive that the original SH games had.
I can't believe they blurred out Guy Cihi, or at least the place where his head was... when he moves the blur stays stationary lol I loved how the one guy said he acted sexy in front of a mirror in the office haha. amazing
The reason why Silent Hill 2 it became a classic is because eventually people began to see how unique, eerie, melancholic and authentic the game's atmosphere it really is, and took the time to enjoy its deeply thoughtful narrative and symbolism. To this day it’s by far one of, if not the most mature examination of grief, sexual trauma, suicide, and morality all combined. It’s an intelligent game that does not hold anyone’s hand and comes at the player with utmost confidence in itself. It’s fantastic stuff. The rest of the original 4 are great in their own right and have their own well written stories, but they don’t hold the same emotional weight to them. I think SH2’s maturity by comparison is something that a lot of people are drawn to. ☯️
I keep coming back to this because I miss the time when video games were made with passion and crafted with real enthusiasm unlike the cheesy shit they come out with in the market nowadays.
I gotta say, the translator took a lot of liberties in the interviews. They got the jist of it all perfect but cut out little interesting details that could have easily fit in the long gaps between text appearing as it did. They really simplified all the details of the hows and whys over a few sentences down into one general sentence a lot.
This is not just a game.. it is pure art and beautiful horror that evokes emotions in you, makes you think deeply about yourself and life. Team Silent changed horror forever. Silent Hill always was and always will be the king of horror. Timeless and unforgettable. They put so much heart and emotion and detail into it and you can feel it. Silent Hill 1, 2, 3 and 4 are just perfect. Homecoming is fine too.
I realize you probs won't see this but thank you so much for uploading these! you always provide us with so much Silent Hill information and I'm genuinely so thankful for what you do for the SH community
I love everything about Silent Hill 2, the entire melancholy of the story, the isolated environments, the characters, the music, the sound effects... It is a masterpice, the best of the franchise.
"Like in the first game, the main character does not have the key role" One of the millions of reasons why this franchise lives in my heart. James and Harry were great characters but those around them created the story. Genius. Perfect example is Heather and Henry. Both were main protagonists but they had the key roles i.e birth of the God and 21 sacrements. Im away to play ps1 now :D
BRILLIANT. One of the most influential games of the early 2000s. Played it a lot, and now seeing this video in 2017 made me think about the genius of that game and its creators.
This making of gets more and more impressive with every console generation. As pretty as graphics are looking now, Silent Hill still holds up so well for simple design choices, like using manual modeling for characters' facial expressions as opposed to motion capture. Only just this year did Masahiro Ito even reveal that Pyramid Head's great knife was intended to be one half of a pair of giant scissors, and that the one James finds was originally supposed to be a different model entirely. Silent Hill 2 really is a lasting work of true genius, yet not because of one single entity. Everyone onboard worked so harmoniously to create a masterpiece.
I remember when i first saw silent hill 2 in the shop I knew it was gonna be a great game by the amount of work they put into making the case look beautiful the way it folds out with art of the characters and parts of Mary's letter on it
