My sister and I met a couple of guys working at the Chicken of the Sea Restaurant which was located in Fantasyland we were 16 and 17. These guys took us on this ride before the general public was able to ride it, when it was only opened to employees, it was so far beyond anything offered anywhere, it was amazing then, and still is :o)
At 7:03, you can see a rare image of the "hat box ghost". This was a character that was removed from the ride BEFORE the attraction opened. It was originally in the attic scene and the gag was that his head would disappear from his shoulders and reappear in a hat box he held in his hand. The effect never worked properly so they decided to remove it.
The Hatbox Ghost is considered to be the ghost that has been most talked about. He was in the attraction once, but he got taken out even before the ride first opened because his effect simply couldn't work. Though there are rumors that he's coming back later this year during the 40th anniversery of this ride. *whew!*
Wow, Walt was so clever, he really did love authenticity, and that led to big bucks, although, i'm pretty sure that wasn't his intenstions. I'm sure he just wanted the guest to enjoy the ride as much as possible.
Tony and Bruce were right about how we waited for this to open. I hoped to take my girlfriend there on my all night party but we finally made it on hers just after it opened. It was great being able to work on the 3rd edition at Tokyo Disneyland and hunting down all the ghostly Victorian Antiques in Japan's Movie Prop houses and dealers. They only wanted to rent the pieces to us, so i would tell them i had no idea how long the ghosts would want to hold on to them.
Man, I remember this. It was on the HM DVD, and it was only available through the computer. I had the hardest time setting it up! I don't think it existed before the movie, though, and I'd watch it over the movie any day!
@33Keith33: No. He was IN the ride for test runs and some people participated in that, so they saw him. But after the effects proved to be difficult, he was removed. Now, they could just make him using CGI or something.
I Like this Version a little more than the final Graveyard Jamboree! 5:33 its more wild and.. has a wooooooooaaah! feel to it. Imagine a hundred ghosts singing that around you!
when they do the busts with that light from 5:35 to 5:50 its really neat didnt know they did that with the singing busts i thought it was all anamatronics (however you spell it)
when hinges creek in doorless chambers when strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls whenever candlelight's flicker where the air is deathly still that is the time when ghosts are present practicing there terror with goolish delight!(i've always wanted to say that!)
iam an ex castmember of the haunted mansion and i was told that a man on LSD had a gun and was hallucentating and thought teh pictures of the men shooting were real and shot at the glass. they didnt replace it because the ride would be shut down for awhile. so they put a spinder web type sticker to cover it
If you are referring to the crack in the screen that separates the buggies from the ballroom then its where a guest threw a rock (or some other hard object) at the glass... as apposed to replacing the entire screen (which would have required the entire attraction being closed for some time) they merely converted the crack into a spider web motif,,,
We've been holding back and saving our Haunted Mansion coverage! So far, we've covered Expedition Everest and POTC on PipersPicksTV - but HM certainly is on the books!
I really wish Mark Davis would of gotten his entire wish, I would've enjyed the ride so much more. I really do love the special effects, but hate being scared
@erikals2 Yeah it was like a pop-up-book type set up, three dimensional type thing. Mostly cardboard but lots of moving parts. It was a cool and creepy game.
Silent Birthday Hahaha, woah, throwback! I absolutely have! I got over my fears in my early teens - but still close my eyes at the graveyard party scene when things pop out 😂 I’m not scared, just easily surprised!
@Bellalisa: The thing is...the Mansion CAN BE silly, fun, AND scary WITHOUT it being campy like the 2003 film, because the Mansion was a dual-designed ride, meant to be both scary & silly. Coats did the scary parts (ex: attic) & Davis did the silly parts (ex: graveyard).
The only improvement was the chase scene, because it's more beliveable to have pirates looting the place, rather than having the wenches carrying food.
@nerdymisfit: Yet, Constance's VA read aloud one of those very stories involving the early incarnation of Emily, Constance's bleeding heart predecessor, entitled Nuptial Doom, so make of that what you will.
To continue, Peter Pan, Snow White, and Alice are pretty much linear re-tellings of their stories, and your vehicle is just your seat for the show. But PotC wasn't telling a story. Now it's telling the story of how the Spanish village is protecting Jack despite the fact they have a treasure they know he would want. WTF? It's just not as good as before.
@Singamajigfan200 But then if I go on the Haunted Mansion, then I will miss all the cute stuff, because it tends to get crowded quickly, IE Fantasy Land in particular. I have a remedy for the Haunted Mansion, its Splash Mountain, since it tends to be such a quick wait and such a long ride, it helps. Lol. But thank you for the tip ;)
I think the first one was a good movie, but the 2nd and 3rd ones, meh. I personally think that the 60's attractions like the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Submarine Voyage were great because they weren't copid from a cartoon. Sure, I love Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but they aren't really unuiqe. The WDW Mr. Toad was, but it's long gone, and 20k was pretty much a copy of Submarine voyage. The Jack renovations just made it an advert for the movie.
@LexiAlexxa: Constance is a JOKE. She is WEAK. The only good thing is that her VA, Kat, paid ODE to Emily, her bleeding heart predecessor, by recording the "Nuptial Doom" supposed backstory regarding Captain Blood & the earliest incarnation of Emily, before she became known as Master Gracey's second wife.
@runswithcoyote17 lol! that is awesome u went on a feild trip there! i never noitice people looking at us only if there there. but the ghosts aremade form light
@AliceJamesandAlondra: Feh. They only updated the PotC ride because the movies were successful. If the 2003 HM movie weren't such a stupid travesty dud on the Mansion's legacy, we might've gotten Eddie Murphy autoanimatronics into the Mansion. Thank whatever spirits protecting the Mansion that such a notion never--heh--materialized.
i liked the movie ok, but the ride wold have been horrible if it had a movie like addition. the pirates of the carribean change was bad enough, and they did it to capitalize on the media buzz. ps, if you ever ride it , count the strands of pearls on the widow
